Actually the spark doesn't come from the friction, but from the rapid oxidation of the small iron particles that get loose on impact with the sharp edge of the flint. In other terms: pure iron ignites when it gets in contact with air.
The iron you are holding in your hand is already oxidized from the surface, thus there is no burning or heat until you scrape away the small parts from it.
FUck i want to live somewhere that snows and has woods!!!! fuck i also want to live like in the forest in a small cottage :D just living off the land man! that sounds like the life ! and having a survival knife and a bow!!! yea but to bad all i live in is shitty singapore!!!! its always hot and humid!!!! and never snows!!!! also it doesnt have any woods!!! and all it has is thick jungle and extremely thick forests
@superknight660 Many elsewhere do not have what you have and never in their lives get too see what a jungle or thickly wooded forest actually is. What I would do if I were in your shoes, if it is legal, would be to get with a survivalist or well trained person in the military from your country and learn how to live in the jungle/forest for fun at 10, 60, 120 or even 365 days! Practice building shelters, small controlled camp fires, learn what plants are edible, etc... should be lots of fun!
@EditorialResponse I dont think its legal..... probably coz there is so many things that can kill u there..... I mean a forest can hav things that kill u but i mean the jungle is insane! i just look at the beggining and it looks like a death trap..... even though i would mind doing what u suggested :P but i dont think so due to the laws of singapore..... -.-
@danny99999999999999 Hey guy, You can also use a file. I have gotten a cheep one and broken it into pieces about 3 - 4 inches long. Some files you can just start using but it will eat up your flint faster. In my area there is no natural flint so I rub the edge of the file on concrete to rub off the ridges. Some files also have a coating so you have to do this then. You don't have to rub off the flat sides of the file. This works fine and is cheep. I did this before I bought a blacksmith striker.
steel virtualy anywhere... flint you can do some research into where it is in your local area but that can be hard work so its easier to just buy it online
hey, i ur vids always help me so much, i have a question, with that "bird's nest" frayed twine, how much uf that small bunch do you use to start a fire, the whole thing or just like half of it?
the more you use the longer the initial fire will burn so you cna get the small kindlign to start burning, you dotn ahve to use much at all, but the bigger the next the easier it is to get it going...
do u ever actually use these things in real situations? why do u have so many different fire making stuff? surely u dont use them. its interesting, but i cant see you ever having to use them. also its ember, amber is solidified tree sap which coincidentally can be used as a fuel.
yes I have used every single thgin you see hre at least twice to amke a fire for camping and recreation...gettign aire going to maybe cook some food in some cases or just to sit around on a cold summer night...
Do you think that when you make another video on survival fires that you could do a little more on explanation of the charcloth. Because its fairly expensive for how easy it is to make....I made mine outa old boxers :p
Awesome backdrop going on. I wish I could live out there
defimatly I woudlnt suggets anyone buying it, its just too easy to amke, and even if you cnat get a fire going or dont have time or are allowd to you can make it on your grill which many people own...I happent op use a few old t-shirts, 2 of them were freebies from some promotion, one shirt makes alot of clothe too!
I think I made an unreal amount of it with my one boxers lol. But all you have to do is put the squares of cloth(cotton) in a tin can(pellet tin for pellet guns or those tin cans for small candles) and pop a hole in the top and let it burn in the flames/embers. And what is really cool is that one square is enough for a dozen or so fires if your good :D
Yes, you can make fire with the English flint he is showing. A lot of the storebought flints arent real 100% flint. A lot of it is a mix of materials such as magnesium and you can tell because you burn off the flint striker before the steel filing or whatever you are using.
Thanks, its my grandfathers property, Im under his Deck in this vid...Its now ym dads property, we really enjoy it, thats his laek and he owns everything you see...
Its more of a big pond, but yeah its alot of fun, but alot of upkeep too, its worth it, I love to fish there I have a vid on it if you search bass cutlerylover...
You cna buy carbon steel strikers prett cheap on ebay or you cna buy just plain old carbon steel online and make your own if you can heat it up and hammer the shape out, or you cna use one of the thousands of carbon steel knives on the market, like the cheap $10 carbon steel Mora fixed blade, just use the back of the blade the spine to strike the flint...If you want to go REALLY primitive, you cna use Pyrite, which cna be found in the ground to strike against the flint, thats what cavemen did...
Yes, ebay has them all the tijme for a little over $10...But there are alos primitive tool online stores, just google flint and steel, or primitive firemaking...
I am not sure about Dicks...Are you talking about a fire steel or the magnesium bar? you cna get the magnesium bar at walmart, but not fire steels...As for this video, the flint I use is the "rock" thats natural flint, the metal bar is carbon steel...
Natural flint come sis all different kidns depending on where in the wrold your located...I am not sure what you have in your backyard? But other minerals work too, just not as well like quartz and churt...
I am not sure where like what areas have what kind of flint, but if you cant find any for free ebay always has some for sale...Usually under $10 for 2 or 3 pieces...or like $10 - $15 for a small flint and steel kit...
where did you get the flint

@hihlari The oxidation would not occur without the friction. Physical energy converted to chemical energy. Sodium will burn on exposure to oxygen.
