Their songs have more than one meaning and they admit to this...usually bits and pieces of anything, sometimes taking a tongue and cheek stance on religion, politics....they like to poke fun at things........they are not the types to be anti anything.....they are just being creative and keeping the fans entertained.
@darkblighttmo The way I interpret it, it's about taking risks. TMBG doesn't write songs about something as shallow as drug use; any fan of them would know that. In fact, the Johns claim that their drug of choice would be coffee, so...there you have it.
Respond to this video... lol listen to the words dumbass, the spiraling shape is drugs.. no one knows what it is really like but everyone says it's great.. lol this is one of the only obvious tmbg songs out there where you know exactly what they are talking about
the johns are pretty anti drug and this song is pushing that agenda. i have heard every tmbg song and been to about 40 concerts, and met them in person. i also go on the wiki alot and read about song meanings from them, drugs
@darkblighttmo "no one knows what it is really like but everyone says it's great..."
You could just as easily say it's about taking some sort of risk. Sure, they're anti-drug, but I've read numerous interpretations of their songs, and most of the time people say it's about some sort of complicated, abstract, esoteric concept. God forbid you should be as hardcore a fan as you say you are and still not realize that.
@YourFaceWillDie468@darkblighttmo You're both wrong, John and John are not "anti-drug". They Might Be Giants have written songs clearly about drug use, such as The Statue Got Me High. Linnell has also written Idaho for his album State Songs which is about a drug trip John Lennon had.
The song is up for interpretation, as there is no assertive meaning given to it.
@retroSLEDGE The Statue Got Me High isn't necessarily about drug use; I heard it was about someone who's mind is literally blown by how awesome a statue is. However, I agree with you that they don't limit their topics; their songs are all pretty much open for all interpretation, and I find it annoying when people act like their interpretation is the right one and nobody else's could even possibly be accurate.
Love that this is similar to Junji Ito's manga "Uzumaki" where people get driven insane by spiral shape. Kind of an old wives' tale about the subject, And TMBG makes a catchy tune about it. Genius.
@EricNinden Funny you've mentioned that. Someone on the Anime News Network did an article for the "House of 1000 Manga" about Uzumaki and referenced the song. I'll send you the link.
Very rare? Nothing Amazon or Best Buy online cannot solve.
I actually found my copy when looking to see if there was any TMBG at a local secondhand media outlet.
It's fun to see what stereos or computers are compatible with the CD of the Factory Showroom. My PC won't read it, and my Xbox 360 had a hard time but finally got it going, with the exception of Token Back to Brooklyn. My clock radio can rewind it, which is nice. For everything else, I have They Got Lost.
@Firestar1202 i looked for that scene all over the internet and finally found it just to figure out some part of the lyrics i could look for on google... found the song!
@Firestar1202 possibly the best moment in the entire series, between that, the time malcolm shows hes a genuis or the last ep. still absolutely fantastic!
Whenever I hear the beginning of this song I start laughing because I can only picture that scene from that one Malcolm in the Middle when they are rolling all that thing down the roof with all of the pictures and things in it and the red paint and then Hal pulls in with the Porsche guy and it is just a disaster. Hahahaha that is like my favorite scene from that show ever.
@GrandIchiban omfg. If you know tmbg only from their unfortunate association with heaving pile of garbage otherwise known as Malcolm in the Middle, please pretend you've never heard them. My nightmare is having to stand next to bunch of fucking mitm fanboys while I'm trying to enjoy one of the greatest, most original bads that has ever existed.
@stephiedear Fuck U, Malcom in the middle is the simpsons in real life, the reason why they use such creative music for such an amazing show is how fitting it is, u probably like Glee, or modern family, so u can suck a dick, great song, great show punk
@stephiedear and its bands, not bads, they are not bad, they are good, u stupid idiot, thats like people bitching about how the social network brought a lot of people to the song, baby your'e a rich man. good movie Good song. It fit perfectly
@TheWolfdata Perhaps you could take a moment to stop being a blithering fucking simpleton and learn how to make an actual point instead of blindly raging like an underage cocksucking pile of shit.
