I Was only 6 yrs old (1969) My Dad took me to Lyon's Drag Strip in Long Beach Ca, Prudhomme was Debuting his Pearl White & Blue "Hot Wheels" Funny Car./ Had been to the Drag's only a few times. We stood very near the starting line. Snake stages for a single pass. Problems/He shuts it Down./ Body Comes Up. Snake gets out, Walks toward ME! Takes off Helmet, Puts Out His Hand, Gloves and all, to shake,..Thrilled and Scared Shitless,..I Reached up and shook the Snake's Hand!!!
I love the plug about hydroplane racing. Im a huge fan of both sports. Its nice to hear someone outside the sport of boat racing knows about the lesser known hydros. aside from that, very scary back flip. Seeing those tube chasis crumble like that is never a good sight.
The NHRA had to cut Sanair off the schedule because of federal law on leaded fuel. The ban on leaded racing fuel led to the end of Le Grandnational Molson. The NHRA, unlike NASCAR, has yet to switch to unleaded fuel.
I was there also for this amazing crash and I thought for sure the Snake was finished for sure. We were sitting right at the 660' and he was still in the throttle with the car almost straight up. We went over in the pits after that and talked to Force and he said and I quote "The Snake's gettin pretty spectacular out ther again ain't he" And we had a good laugh. That was the race that Force won his first National event ever if I remember correctly that started the Force Dynasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Force's 1st ever win did come at this very same venue, but it was 3 years earlier in 1987, Prudhomme at that time was still running in Funny Car, this was 1990, and yes Force did win the event which was career win number 9, I think
Ok, here's the situation. The tape this race was recorded on was in very good condition. I have two tapes I am getting stuff off of that aren't, and thats why I haven't loaded them yet. But I plan on it, and soon.
Great stuff. I haven't seen this crash in 18 years but still remember vividly Kenny Bernstein running full speed towards his dragster after it left the track. Thanks so so much for posting this!
I love this stuff.I have alot of this sort of thing on some very old video tapes. The audio has faded over the years making it hard to digitise. thank you for sharing this.
