French! eh I am British and we all know there is a certain arrogance especially amongst Parisians!!! Having said that Londoners are or can be the same :)
@thegypsy Well, it's not Carrie's situation, since she's trying really hard to speak French (and she's totally understandable!) and the woman herself speaks English ! I don't understand the shopseller's attitude (well, she works for Dior, maybe this explains that). I'm always thrilled to meet someone from another country and trying to help them, of course one cannot know every language of the world and English comes in handy ! Anyway, I apologize for the French who have been rude to you !
@thegypsy BUT I can understand some French people can be a little fed up by some scornful attitude - mostly by Americans (sorry...) - who come to France and expect EVERYONE to be speaking in English (most of people just don't speak English in France, except if they are students or if their profession is in tourism or trade!) and who don't even take the time to learn just a tiny bit of French (and this is valid for the rest of the world, not only in France!).
@thegypsy I'm French and I can assure you French people are not all like that ! As Calikola said it, people in big cities can be very rude towards foreigners (Madrid was a terrible experience for me!) and even towards their fellow countrymen. As digdingdong sait it, Parisians in the rest of France too are generally considered scornful.
I love how Carrie is desperately trying to speak French, yet looking at the lady and talking slowly to her like the lady can't follow a simple sentence LOL...and her crawling on the floor of a high end jewelry store with her butt sticking up in the air at the end is hilarious LOL
For people to say all French people are snobs... that's completely wrong. I compare Paris to New York. People in big cities are always a little bit rude. But if you leave the city and go to the smaller towns or countryside, the people are perfectly pleasant.
yes, the typical french sale person can, "OF COURSE" speak English... my lord. the German, yes, Finnish? yes, Dutch? fluently. but French, zero...and it s often, sadly, practice in much higher positions than shop assistants....
I'm French and I never had the opportunity to watch Sex & the City in English... I've always wanted to watch this episode in English, to see how Carrie speaks French. That's so funny haha! I totally agree with one of the previous comment: don't generalize, the French can be nicer. However, I have to recognize that Parisians can be really scornful.
En tout cas, merci beaucoup d'avoir posté les vidéos! Thanks for the vids, they're great!
carrie says "like i said, i phoned and left a message. i lost my necklace...carrie, you know? my carrie necklace. i was here yesterday and i-i fell....
I'm French and I can say that French people don't usually behave like that, but Parisians usually look down on people, but come on, that's cliché, you can't generalize all the time.
Looooove Carrie & Big by the way. I wish he had kicked some russian ass though :D
This is not a deleted scene, unless you mean from the TBS version of the show, which I like to call "And the City", and a friend calls "Church Girls."
this is off topic a bit....A GOOD RULE OF THUMB: if you're dating someone and they treat you like gold but treat the waiter or service person like shit.....HUGE RED FLAG! DUMP HIM OR HER IMMEDIATELY!
What is all this abut Europeans being rude!! Come on, any educated person would realize that you can find rude people everywhere and really nice people everywhere too! I'm Spanish and I've been to several European countries and it's no big difference! Europe is a great place in its own way, just as the States is.
"and they get people being rude to them a hard job" - you don't think being a lawyer is difficult?
The constant threat of liability if you make a mistake? People screaming at you to meet deadlines? Threats (especially in the criminal division)towards your life/family?.
Don't tell me standing behind a counter is hard, please.
Plus, I'm sure less people would be agitated with people in service positions if they weren't so obnoxious, arrogant and unhelpful. Maybe not all of them, but a fair few.
All jobs educated and uneducated both can be dificult, so you dont think standing behind a counter is hard, i scent an air of snobishness
here, and how do you know about being a lawyer
your still studying. Maybe a person behind a counter never had the money or opurtunity or social standing to become educated so please dont look down on people behind a counter the working class people have a right somtimes to be odd
You're the one who was being snobby by implying lawyers are lesser human beings with no moral fortitude. You insinuated we get handed everything on a gold spoon, rip people off and do nothing for society. Take your own advice. I speak to people in the profession so I know about the difficulties.
And I am sick of being talked down to by people behind a desk when I make EVERY effort to be pleasant and nice, it happens alot and it shouldn't.
A lawyer obviously had a choice to become a lawer or what ever profession they so decided to take, a lot of people dont have that choice
look upon the middle uper classes with envy and so the reaction.I know people who work behind counters and various jobs like that and a lot of people see them as an easy target to treat them badly so it goes both ways except the customer is allways right
They can defend themselves if someone targets them, I agree.
I have NEVER treated a service person badly, I always go up with a huge smile on my face and try to be friendly,it's so frustrating when they treat you like vermin.
"Maybe a person behind a counter never had the money or opurtunity" - ok I can sympathize with that, but why the snobbiness? If they don't want us to put them down maybe they shouldn't put us down. What upsets me the most is it's their job to work with people.
Well manners dont cost anything and of course good and bad in all things and people, maybe when a service person sees you they see education and wealth or future wealth and that reflects back on their own standing hence the reaction oh and by the way i get arrogance off people too but i know my politics sociology and history ,I dont like there arrogance and i react to it but its nothing compared to what the rulling classes have done to them in the past and in to the future.
well yea i have been around the frenchies.. feel free to visit .. off course there are nice people but in Paris they are snobs...(well some). he if ur from a country and u know how the people are u say the same right? im just telling you wat i know
I'm french, so I know how people can be here. I don't generalize like you do, because it is not true... A lot of people are bad and rude, but fortunately, a lot of people is nice and great, too... Even in Paris.

Yeah you can talk lawyers always got there hands in somone elses pocket or prolonging cases to make more money by making deals between each other, at least some body behind a counter you know where you stand with them and they get people being rude to them a hard job, a person in law will smile at you and rip you off, all the country needs is another stuck up fucking solicitor
I won't deny that some people in the industry might be like that (as in ANY profession. But they aren't the majority like you think. Some of us have ethics, I know I certainly do.I'm sorry if you've had a bad experience with a bad lawyer, but you shouldn't take it out on the next person you see in that profession. There are good ones.
The reason lawyers charge high fees is because we endure many years of intense study, and whilst some of us may be stuck up, alot of us are just in there to help.
You should come to Holland. We speak English and we love Americans! Come to Amsterdam. I study English, I am in my final year. I also teach English in secondary school.
well the comment i replied to was kedol23, and i meant to say its because of americans, now i now its not all of them, just a small few which give the rest of you a bad name.
can you speak there language , why should they speak yours? americans are unpopular all over the world because there always droping bombs and invading countries, dont travel to europe because we dont want you and your big shit ways your guns and your bombs, your country is the most unpopular in the world and you cant even see it
Alright, I'm not sure if that was directed at me, but I'll venture a response. I actually speak arabic and french fairly well. I'm from Australia, not America(I hope you know the difference, though maybe it's too much to hope).
Even if I was from America, you should make an attempt to distinguish politics from people. It's the leaders who make the decisions, not ordinary citizens.
You're judging them for having prejudice when you aren't much better with your generalizations. Think about it.
Dude. Her accent is so bad! I know SJP doesn't speak French, but seriously, this is why French people are snobby towards Americans. We don't make enough of an effort to understand other people's cultures or try to learn their languages, but we always expect everyone to know English.
But she doesn't expect her to speak English, thats why she's trying hard to speak French, she's trying to respect the local culture and language..accent can't be helped, that just needs practice, at least Carrie's trying!
Thing is, I believe Carrie would do such a thing even in Dior only because of how much that "Carrie" necklace meant to her. Charlotte on the other hand, would definitely be the last person to do such a thing in public. She's a WASP after all.
But but...Carrie wore Candie's in the 80s! I can't believe any self-respecting WASP (no offence to anyone, or for that matter, WASPs in general) would've done that. Now if she wore Keds, then I wouldn't have any problem believing you. LOL. Think I'm going a little nuts abt my Carrie obsession here. :P
no offense here but you arent really that much a fan of the show then are you? thats like saying I'll only watch the last 3 seasons of Friends or something... wow
ps. guys i used to work in a designer store, the actual company would murder (or at least thats what they insinuate) sales staff who act rude and snobby, but still alot of my workmates did, and i hated it! if someone is a bitch, find out their name and write a letter. they will get in trouble!!!!! but dont call the store manager, often they are the bitchiest ones!
yes carries pretty good...i would have hated that lady if she made me look dumb like that..actually spoke english..pff..lol i wanna learn French so badly!
I think I was okay with the clerk's cold looks until she said "boom!" and then I was like yeah, I would start unleashing some REAL New Yorker on them. It would be quite a showdown and hopefully at the end all of us could sit around and smoke cigarettes and drink wine.
I'm not sure the sales clerk's attitude is so much Parisian or French as it is "Dior". Snotty bitch! I've been treated like that in a Coach store before. Funny thing, I work my ass off as a nurse, for which I studied VERY hard, and these store clerks think they're better than everyone else 'cause they sling over-priced generic crap made in China for cryin' out loud!
OK, I am not French but I live in Paris. French might be like that many years ago but nowadays, most of them, especially young ones can speak simple English and are pretty friendly even to non French speaker. And it is common sense that those sales in big shop like Dior can speak fluent English!

OK, I am not French but I live in Paris. French might be like that many years ago but nowadays, most of them, especially young ones can speak simple English and are pretty friendly even to non French speaker. And it is common sense that those sales in big shop like Dior can speak fluent English!
