The jazz pointe dancer, Miss Texas, looks like she's doing a routine choreographed for a 12 year old girl... I am impressed with the violinist's performance. Especially when she obviously hadn't had warm up for a while and had to perform on the spot.
There is an old say, "If it's not broke don't fix it!" The MAO fixed so many things that weren't broken: 1) Moving the pageant from Atlantic City and the Board Walk to Las Vegas; 2) Going from top 10 to top 15 and then picking the winner from 4 remaining contestants; 3) Getting rid of the traditional scepter that accompanies the crown; 4) breaking tradition with the long runway and trading it in for a mini arc; 5) Changing the format every year; need I go on...
The pick up was what made that violin sound bad. She had fairly good intonation. I admire her for being able to stay with the piano accompaniment so well, since it was pre-recorded. Not an easy thing to do with a piece like that.
Washington was the best one. The violin killed my ears. I could swear the tuning wasn't matched up with the other instruments playing in the background.
Yes, I'd have to agree that Washington Or Indiana would have been my pick as Miss America. But, IMO, North Carolina was the most accomplished overall among the finalists in talent competition (and certainly the best overall dancer that night).
hey!!! I have seen that Jazz on Pointe routine before.. There has been a few steps changed, and the music is different, but this is another girls routine from the Teen Miss North Carolina in 1995!!!!!!
@80FrontStreet It'd be even better if they played the saw! No wait, how bout the bagpipes! Either way, if they did something DIFFERENT it would be epic!
These girls don't seem really talented to me at all. I'm sorry. I'm a huge fan of Miss America and there have been some phenomenal performances. The best ever to me vocally was Suzette Charles' 1984b. Her vocals were stellar! Rita Ng played the piano in 2001 I believe and was fantastic as well. Not a great group talent-wise, but Miss Michigan is beyond hot. Vanessa Williams was like that when she won. Not the best talent they'd seen, but hit the other categories. Counts for something.
I'm in our local pageant, and I'm doing South Pacific's "Wonderful Guy" but I'm acting and dancing it out... The violin was ok... I play violin... Granted it would take me a long time to learn all the runs, but she had no tone to it.. it just sounded scratchy...
She is an incredibly tense player which is why she sounds scratchy. Granted sitting there not knowing if you are going to play is quite nerve wracking.
There have been monologue performances. But for some reason they don't make the finals. Miss Vermont did a monologue, but apparently wasn't interesting enough. That's the Miss America Organization's loss.
I'm tired of always seeing contestants with the same talents. It's always singing, or dancing, or playing some sort of very femenine and proper instrument like the violin, flute, or piano. For once I want to see a bass player, a beat box routiune, TUBA solo!, a stand up comedian, a monologue! The pageants I see don't have any variety...
miss california's outstanding teen (the teen branch of miss america)for 2007 plays the drums for her talent and i'm in the teen program as well and i do comedic standup *shrug*
Bravo to you! Really, I'm glad to hear that. I hope you are both well recieved with your talents. Comedic timing is a talent I can totally get behind =)
the violinist was good. but it's a shame how bad pickups sound on string instruments. they're just not acoustically designed to be amplified like that.
Miss Washington was amazing!!!...we need 2 remember that these women aren't professional singers and dancers....therefore we cannot judge them as such...for ordinary girls their talents were decent. BTW I think the winner had a LOVELY voice!!!!!!

Ok!!!! Jessica Jacobs (Miss North Carolina..the last one) was fabulous, true to her craft! she could have had her foot higher on her piqué turns, but other than that, that was worth the surfing! thanks for posting!!
horrible

Miss Washington's voice sounds super nasally. Totally wrong song for her range.

The intonation wasn't good in the slightest. Maybe at the very start.

Bob Fosse was probably turning over in his grave during that "jazz on pointe" routine.

Just curious, what pageant circut are you referring to? There wasn't a Miss Teen America in 95...and Miss Teen USA has no talent portion.

this is Miss America 2008, not for teens, though.
