I think you're right that she was tacked on. In the last episode, I think it's Robin who points out the Ms. M stowed away in her uncle's ship. I don't think she was ever meant to be on the team, but since she ended up on Earth anyways, they decided for her to join.
I dont really see a problem with Megan chracter personally, sure she bubbly and abit boy crazy over Conner but is it really such a crime? espically when you consider Wally has the exact same quirks.
I think fandoms in general are just too hard on female characters, Its like if she to nice she unintresting, to forward she just a bitch, has to small a part she useless, too big apart and she a mary sue apparently and so on. And yet its never as big a deal when guys are written with the same traits.
@LEAFtea57 Bingo! You hit it on the head, women are held to a Whore or Madonna dichotomy and the fandom is always harsh against them... that wasn't the point of this video the point is how the male team mates treat her... especially Wally. Almost everything he says is a pick-up line or thinly veiled innuendo, Superboy is kinda a dick it just irks me... Aqualad, Robin and Red Arrow aren't as bad though. This show is pretty good but it's still kinda got a smurfette-principal and Wally bugs me
@PetiteOzma I would like to see more girls added aswell. As for Wally yeah he is abit of leech to Megan but in all fairness to the writers half the time the others are telling him off for being one. And yeah Conner needs chillax already. Its still early though were only 11 episodes in (even though the show almost a year old at this point =[) so there plenty of time for all the chracters to grow.
@PetiteOzma yes the others tell him off I did enjoy Artemis' snap at him in the Dr. Fate episode, but still these antics are supposed to be funny and I don't find them as such. It's not a big enough beef to stop me from enjoying the show but it does bug me.
@PetiteOzma In Superboy's defense, he's sixteen weeks old, been taught by only a few telepathic experiments, and was created to be a living weapon. I'd be a dick too, considering i would have no clue how to relate to people. Not to mention how his 'mentor' Superman, treats him. That pisses me off something fierce.
OH, LOOK, TOKEN FEMALE! How she's introduced felt like they were lazily tellng the girl audience that YES, THERE'S A GIRL SUPERHERO YOU CAN ALL RELATE TO BECAUSE SHE IS A GIRL- AND LOOK! SHE HAS A CRUSH ON SUPERBOY! JUST LIKE YOU ALL DO!
She feels like the priviledged girl that got into the 'fancy club' because her relative is somehow connected to it. She didn't prove herself like the boys- or at least we haven't seen her prove herself- they just tossed her in all willy nilly.
About 80% of the YJ fanbase hates M'gann. And I can understand why. I mean, her personality. And her unnatural obsession with superboy; it distracts her a lot and becomes her main priority which even bugs me, a M'gann fan. But, I love her nonetheless. She's such a sweetheart, and a good friend anyway you look at her. And you can't tell me: "Hello, Megan!" isn't an adoreable catchphrase.
@xFashionForward I don't hate M'gann, but I agree with you. Mainly because of her crush on Superboy. Not only it's unnecessary, but it seems shallow. The show hasn't established why M'gann likes him other than his looks. But then again, it's too early within the show to see more MMxSB development. Still, she's better off without the love fluff.
@HeavenlyLee NO NO! I don't hate her either, infact she's my favorite chara. (: The thing is, in the original young justice / teen titans comics, M'gann does not even like Superboy. She is actually in a relationship with Tim Drake (The Robin at the time) and Superboy is dating Cassie Sandsmark (Wonder Girl) So, there is no real reason she SHOULD have crush on him, so if M'gann's crush on superboy is shallow, I couldn't tell you because I still don't know why the makers paired them up! xD
@xFashionForward I don't know either. But this is a different interpretation from the comic book. It's most likely that MMxRob or WGxSB won't be canon in the show. I wouldn't be a tad annoyed over MMxSB if the writers gave us a legitimate reason behind it. It seems that M'gann likes Conner no different than why Wally likes M'gann. It's so beneath her.
@xFashionForward i know right!!! god through out the whole time wen she came in i was like yes maybe shell like robin and i was praying until like her 2nd mission wen i found out they made robin freaking 13 i dont know if hes suposed to b 13 but anyway i was praying that she would end up with robin like in teentitans but the difference i hate starfire ugghhh she pissed me off and i was more into raven i like it that in this one theres only 1 girl with powers it like they combines starfire and
@xFashionForward (continuation of my last reply) its like they combined starfire and raven from teen tiatans wich i personally think that i did not like i mean i like it in young justice is that martian girl is the only one with powers i mean since teen titans had 2 girls with powers it was personally .........boaring and made me board but unlike teen titans young justice's charas all have a different capability (even though aqualad has magic he still has water wich is different from megan)
@xFashionForward continuation of last reply.... anyway ..... i do have to agree with u that i think megan should b with robin but.. i do have to say that the fact that they made robin 13, and that super woman is not in a relation with superboy, and the fact the martian girl has a crush on super boy as mad it personally........... intriguing and very interesting so even though i wish megan would b with robin i find it interesting that she is with superboy all of this makes it interesting......
I noticed that Kid Flash and Robin look as if they have crushes on Miss Martin, but she only likes Superboy. Another crazy love triangle similar to A Midsummer night's Dream...
i watched her introduction at least 3 times, and I really don't see what's wrong with the way she introduced herself. She didn't seem super shy, just casuel with a maybe a little shyness, but considering the circumstance, that seems understandable.
I think the whole guys crowding around thing wasn't a big deal,if it was a guy being introduced they probably would have done the same.
and I would like to state,i am a girl and I love tough girl charas, infact artemis is my fav
@Animedragonfly78 again it was just rather the whole way it felt at the end of the pilot... like she was just tacked on. The series has been great I've enjoyed it alot and I was expecting to when this vid was posted... I created this vid for the purposes of doing a review, it's not meant to bash on the show or the character as a whole just point out something about this episode.
In the comics she's not his niece but a White Martian... it seems while the Green Martians were totally wiped out some of the white ones are still around and they're usually bad guys which is why Ms.M makes herself look green. I'm not sure if they're the last martians in this.
But the status quo can always change in comics... Superman was the last son of Kyprton but at times there have been more, like silver age and current Supergirl, and others.
I remember Justice League, watching it on tv and begging my parents to let me stay up a little longer to see it. And you know, they said that J'on was the last martian from mars, so when they brought his niece here out of no where, I was like, LOLWHUT? But they did the same thing with Superman, so. Ha. I love Meaghan, she's awesome. Her obvious crush on super boy is adorable! I don't know. but, Jesse McCartney playing Robin is HILARIOUS. I love it.
@PetiteOzma cool story. But seriously, the normal part was everyone going to greet her. You want them to greet her awkwardly from a distance? Kid Flash was the only one who really flirted with her. That's a stereotype of a some guys right there. Plus, I don't think she was added as an afterthought. It was more of an increased incentive to watch the next episode. She's not the most well known character; people are going to want to see what she can do.
@rainhavok merchandising recognition, most likely but the two costumes are close enough that I can never really tell which is which, but then I don't read much of the flash books.
@rainhavok I think it has to do with the look of the costume. For example, apparently the Robin here is suppose to be Dick Grayson. However, they put him in the Robin costume for Tim Drake, because it looks sleeker and more 'modern'. But that's my take on it.
Do I see an OTP appearing? I really like Ms. Martian. A girl character doesn't always have to be tough and independent. I think it's okay for any human being to depend on others for support. They should be able to stand on their own two feet however knowing your strengths & weaknesses is what makes a person well rounded and fun! Someone who always says, "I got this!" & only wants to do things themselves & not work with others *cough*speedy*cough* don't really make a team that's why i like her^^
@TheDaughterofArtemis Not commenting on your comment, just wondering if you got your youtube name from DC Universe, or from Greek Mythology, if it is the second, wierd, just that she was one of the Eternal Maidens of Olympus, if you catch my drift.
@ironwez20 Cool haven't watched the new episode yet but I love Black Canary so can't wait. Again this was never a commentary on the whole show or how shy she is... it was just a comment on the pilot, can't wait to see that episode. (I'm in Canada, so don't get it on cable)
Although you stated in description this video was uploaded for review purposes I don't think it's entirely fair to make a judgment on a character which we have only seen for 1:29. The description is a bit harsh in my opinion. Although I'm not a girl I can't see how it's a bad thing to be a bit reserved and courteous when you meet your co-workers for the first time.
@Charms002 So what you're saying is that you follow the ideals of "the cult of true womanhood?" a late 19th century philosophy which confined women to "the domestic sphere" and held them up as moral teachers... an ideal that drove many women into insane asylums by the way? And no one would want a tough, strong or independent woman? That's why Marilyn Munroe or to go even futher back Matilda Gage were both married... two extremely smart and independent women. Sorry premise faild.
Is it sad that the video is posted to complain about Miss Martian being underused/mistreated in the episode, and all I can think is, "This series HAS Miss Martian?!? WHY DO I NOT HAVE CABLE?!?!?"
Why do people think Miss Martian's personality is a stereotype of the helpless or shy woman. She is new to earth and she has not interacted with humans before. Anyone would be shy if this was there first time you met a new species
Great show, but it's going to be hard getting used to some of the voices like Aquaman with Green Lantern/John Stewart's voice from Justice League and Aqualad with Cyborg's from Teen Titans.
Also, I like shy Miss Martian. To be honest, the strong-because-I'm female character is getting old. I'm looking forward to seeing her BECOME stronger and more confident. Character development instead of a strength tied to political correctness instead of good writing.
@TheTrueLegend Never said she couldn't be shy as long as not all the women in the series are like that and I'm sure Wonder Woman, Black Canary and Artemis will help balance that out... its just the way that she was introduced at the end of the episode and served no purpose in it except for someone for the boys to flirt with that was bothersome.
I'd almost rather they just completely kept her back.
@PetiteOzma I'm tired of BOTH the shy and feminist woman stereotypes. And the ditsy-go-lucky one while we're at it. Where are my sweet, laid-back and jokester female characters? I'd like a female version of Flash. Well, JL's Huntress is pretty sweet too.
@cakemint why is laid back or jokester not feminist? People seem to keep misunderstanding the idea here, I've got no problem with shy or feminine girls, girls should be free to be whatever they want sterotypes are harmful because they teach children (and adults) that they should be a certain way. There should be all kinds of women... Black Canary is usually pretty funny and laid back... hopefully she will be here too.
@PetiteOzma You sound like a public service announcement, mate. Anyway I probably used the wrong word. Sorry, by "feminist" I meant the "strong-because-I'm female" mentality, as TheTrueLegend put it.
I'll admit, she was added rather abruptly and without much ceremony. She could have easily been introduced in the following episode and then been more part of the plot, that much I definitely agree with.
well that might work of there was the slightest bit of any shyness in anyone other than mr. half psycotic clone and her. as is she was basically introduced to be the girl character and nothing more. plot is over, character development is over, now everyone gets to have cake and ice cream and hot chicks.
@TheTrueLegend it's not Ms. Martian that I'm objecting too... I like her too and yes "strong female characters" doesn't have to mean characters without flaws.
Geeze will people chill? Miss Martian's personaily is NOT sexist. What, we can't have shy girls in our culture anymore because it will get the feminazis all pissy? personally I think it makes her cute but that's my opinion. You'll all get your damn fill of tough action girls with the green arrow chick and Black Canary, let us have our shy alien girl please.
@lion40520 In the comics she's not actually related to him... and she's not the same kind of Martian as he is... read up on her on wikipedia if you want to know more... not sure if the TV show will actually follow that plotline but if it does I don't want to spoil it.
@lion40520 It's hard to say. From what I understand, this series takes place on Earth-16 and has a separate continuity from the other universes in the DC Multiverse. It is likely that the Martian Manhunter's origin in this universe is different from that in the others. In the regular DCU, it has been established that the Martian Manhunter is not the last surviving martian. There are a few other survivors, including Miss Martian.
@Maverynthia you do realize that these sexist tropes are actually you own for fault for over reacting to previous shows were there were no female characters that were heros.
judging from clips ive seen in ads and trailers, i bet the others will underestimate her and she'll surprise their with her skills/powers. i wonder though - does she have a first name?
@LivGirl321 I really hope you're right. In Wisemen's Gargoyles series the character of Angela was subject to furious dating when she first joined the team because she was litterally the first female Gargoyle they saw that wasn't evil in 1000 years... but she eventually shut the boys down and told them it wans't welcome. I hope Ms. Martian does the same. Her name is M'gann M'orzz, but this series kinda seems to be like Teen Titans where it goes soley by their codenames.
@PetiteOzma About the codenames, I doubt that very much. The creators have already said that the characters will be shown in school and stuff, acting as normal teenagers. Besides there'll also be a focus on certain maincharacter(s) hiding their secret identity from the others, which will require adressing this secret identity directly, which was never done in TT (unless you count Beast Boys "reveal").
@Endilmar Again it's the idea that the girl is an after thought... and also for Black Canary, I haven't watched past this episode yet so I don't know how that turns out, hopefully she's not played up as the hot teacher/milf, she's one of my favorite characters so I hope she's treated with respect, cause I do enjoy this show. Again the other thing that bothered me was not a single female member of the Justice League spoke, Dinah couldn't even get one line when introduced as the teacher?
@PetiteOzma I don't know if you're familiar with Greg Weismans site "Ask Greg", but someone already said all this to him and he responded with a pretty good reasoning. If you haven't seen it already you should go read it and decide if you think it's a solid defence or not. the post and his response can be seen at this link: s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/archives.php?lid=617&qid=12810
PS: Weisman says that Black Canary is his ALL TIME favorite superhero, so I'm pretty sure he'll do her justice.
i luv how they combined "martian superheroine" with "shy girl next door" 2 create ms. martian. i wonder though - wats her first name? also - when does artemis come in? my guess is that since the arrow dude's (srry, idk his name) sidekick quit, artemis will come in 2 replace him. just a guess!
@emeka1230 yeah I heared Kid Flash has a thing for Miss M...i also heared tht there is gonna be a thing between Aqualad and Artemis! they look good toghther even though nobody has a clue what she is like lol but she looks awesome :)
Just because you bitch about something doesn't change the fact that it happened. Also, I don't think that she was added in as an afterthought because in the first part after Zatara reports in about the blotting out the sun bit, Green Arrow turns to Martian and asks him that he's glad about not bringing 'You-know-who.' Which obviously refers to Ms. Martian unless they're going to have martians popping up like weeds, which I doubt will happen.
OKAY HANDS DOWN SUPERBOY X MISS M FOREVER!!!!!! Superboy is shy but a little bit of a bad boy ;) and Miss M is a sweet heart they r gonna be MAJOR toghther ;)
@LivGirl321 I KNOW!!!! i hate when they do that! have u ever watched Legion of Superheroes? heck those chicks were like...weaklings it was pathetic :p but Miss M looks like she will kick butt and Artemis looks AWESOME
@LivGirl321 the power set of the martians far surpass those of the kryptonians so she definitely has the capacity to lead the team as far as kicking butt.
@NickTarik Ah the default response that crops up whenever gender politics are discussed. Again I'm not saying it's a bad show, I quite enjoy it... just something to be mindful of.
@NickTarik In what way do you think it isn't valid? There was no girl in the group when they proved they had a right to go on their own. You can disagree with me, but I'm hardly the only one to notice this, several feminist comic book communites I visit have discussed the issue with this episode.
Plotwise it made sense to me. They were formed into a black ops team, they had nobody with any black ops powers (shapeshifting invisibilty,) nor any flyers for that matter. Miss M is around their age, has those useful powers, and was available through another league member so they don't need to go talent scouting throughout the various sidekicks for their secret black ops team. So since she was right there useful and had nothing else to do, Batman put her on the team.
@PetiteOzma i understand what your getting at but with her powers it wouldnt have been much of an episode lol if her powers are the same as th MM then half of the stuff they went through wouldnt have happened lol....but they could of had her in a lot more scenes in some type of way
Well... idk, maybe. I just like Robin because he is very caring, never gives up, super cute, responsible, and so on. I've seen this show called Teen Titans, and that's his personality. :) ^-^ He's also MISUNDERSTOOD just like I am.
@blaria95 Teen titans was a great show but didn't bother much with consitensy with the comics. This robin is more likely to be like the robin from the old batman the animated series, though perhaps a little less serious since this cartoon is less serious
Some points taken, but aside from Kid Flash, I didn't think everyone else was just grouping around to flirt with her. It was not different than people grouping around "the new guy". They were just curious about her and happy about a new member...aside from KF. If it would have been a guy, would grouping around him have been just as bad?
And I still think J'onn made a wise move not to bring his "niece" into the farce the League had with the others. It shows respect to her, even in dialogue only.
Ms. Martian was already going to be brought with the rest of the sidekicks, but J'onn decided against it at the last minute, due to the little trouble with the other sidekicks (as Green Arrow commented earlier in the episode). Now that things were settled and organized, it seemed like a good time to bring her in. Besides, there's still 24 episodes left to develop her character.
@GamerSlyRatchet1 still kinda missing the point of why the absence of any women in the pilot was problematic. Yes the original comic started with just guys but the original comic was also set in a very different universe.. in that universe the Titans had already been established for years (Young Justice was filling in the gap for a teen group after the Teen Titans became just the Titans). But here in this universe this is the first time that the younger generation of heroes had a chance to prove
themselves to the old gaurd who clearly deemed they wern't ready. So what if Miss Martian was also going to be given a tour of the false HQ... whoopie! So what is she'll have other episodes to shine through... this was the defining moment where the sidekicks proved that they had what it took to take care of things on their own, and not a single woman was a part of it... none of the women on the Justice League even get to speak in this episode, and when Miss Martian is brought in she's
within moments flirted with and fought over like a prize and pretty much treated as a piece of meat. But above all it's the fact that as this defining moment in the history of a whole generation of heroes not a single woman was present. Remember this isn't the normal DCU, even Superman and the league are pretty new in this reality, so this is the first time that young generation had a real test. The original Teen Titans had a girl from the start and considering the challanges that women still
face in society, because of male privilidge and enforcement of gender roles (yes society has gotten better but still has a long way to go). It's kinda a slap in the face for Ms. Martian to be an afterthought at the end of the episode and then flirted with to the extent that she is.
Otherwise I loved the pilot and look foward to seeing more of the show... but this still feels like a missed oppurtunity from a feminist standpoint.
Still think you are blowing this way out of proportion. So Kid Flash was flirting with her and the others were genuinely interested in having her as a member of the team. She even did some flirting back with Superboy, and it seems more sexist that she doesn't get judged for doing this than ONE boy. And, if anything, its less sexist that she gets to join the team in her terms, rather than having to jump through the hoops the League basically forced on the others. To automatically
@GamerSlyRatchet1 Flirting is not a bad thing, if both people are fully consenting... but the way the boys crowd around her (aside from Superboy) is just irksome... it's not so much that she's flirted with is that that's the only thing done with her in the entire episode she serves no other purpose in this episode.
And I disagree with you on your other point... again I'm not saying the whole show is bad I'm saying there's some problematic elements in the pilot, and those deserve to be discusse
discussed. You site Gargoyles which is indeed a show which has several strong female cast members but most episodes (before the introduction of Goliath's Daughter Angela) still fail the Bechdel test, for example. We live in a society that is still male based, and comics are a mostly male driven industry... Wiseman's stuff is pretty good but problems crop up even for the best writers... even my own writing (I'm an aspiring novelist aned comic writer) isn't free of problems.
this isn't a condemnation of the entire work, just pointing out one of the two the problematic bits of the episode. The other is that all the women on the League are "seen but not heard" in the second half of the pilot.
And don't worry, I don't believe you are being disrespectful. Though I disagree with some of your points, you are communicating them in an intelligent and thoughtful manner, and if you didn't even care for the show, this discussion wouldn't be taking place. So, props to you.
be allowed to be a full member of the group, rather than having her to "prove" herself. Not to mention that Greg Weisman is producing this series, and he's known for producing strong, female characters, such as Demona and Eliza Masa. He even was in charge of the second season of W.I.T.C.H., so don't worry about this show being "disrespectful" to women.
@GamerSlyRatchet1 I'm not saying the series would be bad and I'm familair with Wiseman's work, I'm saying this one episode is problematic and in other ways... and believe me I'm not the only one whose noticed.
@Libx920 Wow Libx, that's the most insightful comment ever. Of course I know that most superhero comics are targeted towards men, but that doesn't stop them from being enjoyable for women as well. I know lots of women who read comics as well as men who are aware of gender politics and work towards positive changes (just watch Linkara's comic reviews)... If my opinions bore you so much then go to another channel, as a comic book and superhero fan I have as much right to my opinion as you.
furthermore DC often produces a lot of comics I can admire as a feminist, Birds of Prey, Supergirl, Wonder Woman, Gotham City Sirens... all have been great (with some mediocre runs). When Wonder Woman relaunched in the 80s after the Crisis on Infinite Earths part of the goal (as was the goal with the original Wonder Woman) was to make comics more girl friendly and that goal hasn't been abandoned. I love comics, they're a huge part of my life... and I'll comment on them if I please.
@Libx920 The lessons the media teaches children are paramount, and what's directed to boys is just as important as what's directed to girls. There's nothing wrong with critical analysis; I'm not trolling anyone, I have said repeatedly that I enjoyed the cartoon. I'm just bringing to light some problematic elements, that I'm not alone in noticing. I'm not calling for a boycott or anything like that... I buy dozens of DC comics every month, clearly it's something I enjoy the fact I analyze
Miss Martian wasn't Martian Manhunter's neice in the comics. She was a white martian. She just shapeshifted into a green martian with red hair.

About 80% of the YJ fanbase hates M'gann. And I can understand why. I mean, her personality. And her unnatural obsession with superboy; it distracts her a lot and becomes her main priority which even bugs me, a M'gann fan. But, I love her nonetheless. @xFashionForward I don't hate M'gann, but I agree with you. Mainly because of her crush on Superboy. Not only it's unnecessary, but it seems shallow. TheJudgetv 7 months ago
TheJudgetv 7 months ago
@xFashionForward continuation of last reply.... anyway ..... i do have to agree with u that i think megan should b with robin but.. i do have to say that the fact that they made robin 13, and that super woman is not in a relation with superboy, and the fact the martian girl has a crush on super boy as mad it personally........... intriguing and very interesting so even though i wish megan would b with robin i find it interesting that she is with superboy all of this makes it interesting......

i watched her introduction at least 3 times, and I really don't see what's wrong with the way she introduced herself. She didn't seem super shy, just casuel with a maybe a little shyness, but considering the circumstance, that seems understandable.
I think the whole guys crowding around thing wasn't a big deal,if it was a guy being introduced they probably would have done the same.

@Animedragonfly78 again it was just rather the whole way it felt at the end of the pilot... like she was just tacked on. The series has been great I've enjoyed it alot and I was expecting to when this vid was posted... question: i thought martian manhunter was the last of the martians so did he forget his niece
Animelover748 1 year ago 7
In the comics she's not his niece but a White Martian... it seems while the Green Martians were totally wiped out some of the white ones are still around and they're usually bad guys which is why Ms.M makes herself look green. I'm not sure if they're the last martians in this.
But the status quo can always change in comics... Superman was the last son of Kyprton but at times there have been more, like silver age and current Supergirl, and others.

She's not the most well known character; people are going to want to see what she can do.

why is barry allen wearing wally's flash costume?
rainhavok 1 year ago
@rainhavok merchandising recognition, most likely but the two costumes are close enough that I can never really tell which is which, but then I don't read much of the flash books.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@rainhavok I think it has to do with the look of the costume. For example, apparently the Robin here is suppose to be Dick Grayson. However, they put him in the Robin costume for Tim Drake, because it looks sleeker and more 'modern'. But that's my take on it.
freefallah 1 year ago
@freefallah That's likely too. Just like Batman the Brave and the Bold has a retro-feel so Helena Bartelli wear's Helena Wayne's Huntress costume.

Zubz313 1 year ago
@Charms002 So what you're saying is that you follow the ideals of "the cult of true womanhood?" a late 19th century philosophy which confined women to "the domestic sphere" and held them up as moral teachers... an ideal that drove many women into insane asylums by the way? And no one would want a tough, strong or independent woman? That's why Marilyn Munroe or to go even futher back Matilda Gage were both married... two extremely smart and independent women. Sorry premise faild.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
Is it sad that the video is posted to complain about Miss Martian being underused/mistreated in the episode, and all I can think is, "This series HAS Miss Martian?!? WHY DO I NOT HAVE CABLE?!?!?"
... It is, isn't it?
Divides 1 year ago
Why do people think Miss Martian's personality is a stereotype of the helpless or shy woman. She is new to earth and she has not interacted with humans before. Anyone would be shy if this was there first time you met a new species
Kepia4 1 year ago 34
Great show, but it's going to be hard getting used to some of the voices like Aquaman with Green Lantern/John Stewart's voice from Justice League and Aqualad with Cyborg's from Teen Titans.
Also, I like shy Miss Martian. To be honest, the strong-because-I'm female character is getting old. I'm looking forward to seeing her BECOME stronger and more confident. Character development instead of a strength tied to political correctness instead of good writing.
TheTrueLegend 1 year ago 37
@TheTrueLegend Never said she couldn't be shy as long as not all the women in the series are like that and I'm sure Wonder Woman, Black Canary and Artemis will help balance that out... its just the way that she was introduced at the end of the episode and served no purpose in it except for someone for the boys to flirt with that was bothersome.
I'd almost rather they just completely kept her back.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma I'm tired of BOTH the shy and feminist woman stereotypes. And the ditsy-go-lucky one while we're at it. Where are my sweet, laid-back and jokester female characters? I'd like a female version of Flash. Well, JL's Huntress is pretty sweet too.
cakemint 1 year ago
@cakemint why is laid back or jokester not feminist? People seem to keep misunderstanding the idea here, I've got no problem with shy or feminine girls, girls should be free to be whatever they want sterotypes are harmful because they teach children (and adults) that they should be a certain way. There should be all kinds of women... Black Canary is usually pretty funny and laid back... hopefully she will be here too.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma You sound like a public service announcement, mate. Anyway I probably used the wrong word. Sorry, by "feminist" I meant the "strong-because-I'm female" mentality, as TheTrueLegend put it.
cakemint 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma
I'll admit, she was added rather abruptly and without much ceremony. She could have easily been introduced in the following episode and then been more part of the plot, that much I definitely agree with.
TheTrueLegend 1 year ago
@TheTrueLegend
well that might work of there was the slightest bit of any shyness in anyone other than mr. half psycotic clone and her. as is she was basically introduced to be the girl character and nothing more. plot is over, character development is over, now everyone gets to have cake and ice cream and hot chicks.

Geeze will people chill? Miss Martian's personaily is NOT sexist. @lion40520 In the comics she's not actually related to him... and she's not the same kind of Martian as he is... read up on her on wikipedia if you want to know more... not sure if the TV show will actually follow that plotline but if it does I don't want to spoil it.

@PetiteOzma Greg said this show is about secrets so his "niece" may just be for show.
Skiks 1 year ago
@lion40520 It's hard to say. From what I understand, this series takes place on Earth-16 and has a separate continuity from the other universes in the DC Multiverse. It is likely that the Martian Manhunter's origin in this universe is different from that in the others. In the regular DCU, it has been established that the Martian Manhunter is not the last surviving martian. There are a few other survivors, including Miss Martian.

@Maverynthia you do realize that these sexist tropes are actually you own for fault for over reacting to previous shows were there were no female characters that were heros.

LivGirl321 1 year ago
@LivGirl321 I really hope you're right. In Wisemen's Gargoyles series the character of Angela was subject to furious dating when she first joined the team because she was litterally the first female Gargoyle they saw that wasn't evil in 1000 years... but she eventually shut the boys down and told them it wans't welcome. I hope Ms. Martian does the same. Her name is M'gann M'orzz, but this series kinda seems to be like Teen Titans where it goes soley by their codenames.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma ah, thank u 4 explaining. i wonder wat her character will turn into...
LivGirl321 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma About the codenames, I doubt that very much. The creators have already said that the characters will be shown in school and stuff, acting as normal teenagers. Besides there'll also be a focus on certain maincharacter(s) hiding their secret identity from the others, which will require adressing this secret identity directly, which was never done in TT (unless you count Beast Boys "reveal").
Vendetta645 1 year ago
@Maverynthia Except thats how this girl always was?
Skiks 1 year ago
@Endilmar Again it's the idea that the girl is an after thought... and also for Black Canary, I haven't watched past this episode yet so I don't know how that turns out, hopefully she's not played up as the hot teacher/milf, she's one of my favorite characters so I hope she's treated with respect, cause I do enjoy this show. Again the other thing that bothered me was not a single female member of the Justice League spoke, Dinah couldn't even get one line when introduced as the teacher?
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma I don't know if you're familiar with Greg Weismans site "Ask Greg", but someone already said all this to him and he responded with a pretty good reasoning. If you haven't seen it already you should go read it and decide if you think it's a solid defence or not. the post and his response can be seen at this link: s8.org/gargoyles/askgreg/archives.php?lid=617&qid=12810
PS: Weisman says that Black Canary is his ALL TIME favorite superhero, so I'm pretty sure he'll do her justice.

I have one question: Why bother talking about it?
Just because you bitch about something doesn't change the fact that it happened. Also, I don't think that she was added in as an afterthought because in the first part after Zatara reports in about the blotting out the sun bit, Green Arrow turns to Martian and asks him that he's glad about not bringing 'You-know-who.' Which obviously refers to Ms. Martian unless they're going to have martians popping up like weeds, which I doubt will happen.

PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma

@blaria95 Teen titans was a great show but didn't bother much with consitensy with the comics. This robin is more likely to be like the robin from the old batman the animated series, though perhaps a little less serious since this cartoon is less serious
waldoman7 1 year ago
Some points taken, but aside from Kid Flash, I didn't think everyone else was just grouping around to flirt with her. It was not different than people grouping around "the new guy". They were just curious about her and happy about a new member...aside from KF. If it would have been a guy, would grouping around him have been just as bad?
And I still think J'onn made a wise move not to bring his "niece" into the farce the League had with the others. It shows respect to her, even in dialogue only.

BertBelievesForever 1 year ago
GamerSlyRatchet1 1 year ago
@GamerSlyRatchet1 still kinda missing the point of why the absence of any women in the pilot was problematic. Yes the original comic started with just guys but the original comic was also set in a very different universe.. in that universe the Titans had already been established for years (Young Justice was filling in the gap for a teen group after the Teen Titans became just the Titans). But here in this universe this is the first time that the younger generation of heroes had a chance to prove
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
themselves to the old gaurd who clearly deemed they wern't ready.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
within moments flirted with and fought over like a prize and pretty much treated as a piece of meat. But above all it's the fact that as this defining moment in the history of a whole generation of heroes not a single woman was present. Remember this isn't the normal DCU, even Superman and the league are pretty new in this reality, so this is the first time that young generation had a real test. The original Teen Titans had a girl from the start and considering the challanges that women still
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
face in society, because of male privilidge and enforcement of gender roles (yes society has gotten better but still has a long way to go). It's kinda a slap in the face for Ms. Martian to be an afterthought at the end of the episode and then flirted with to the extent that she is.
Otherwise I loved the pilot and look foward to seeing more of the show... but this still feels like a missed oppurtunity from a feminist standpoint.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma
GamerSlyRatchet1 1 year ago
@GamerSlyRatchet1 Flirting is not a bad thing, if both people are fully consenting... but the way the boys crowd around her (aside from Superboy) is just irksome... it's not so much that she's flirted with is that that's the only thing done with her in the entire episode she serves no other purpose in this episode.
And I disagree with you on your other point... again I'm not saying the whole show is bad I'm saying there's some problematic elements in the pilot, and those deserve to be discusse
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
this isn't a condemnation of the entire work, just pointing out one of the two the problematic bits of the episode. The other is that all the women on the League are "seen but not heard" in the second half of the pilot.
PetiteOzma 1 year ago
@PetiteOzma

GamerSlyRatchet1 1 year ago
@GamerSlyRatchet1 I'm not saying the series would be bad and I'm familair with Wiseman's work, I'm saying this one episode is problematic and in other ways... and believe me I'm not the only one whose noticed.

Libx920 1 year ago

@PetiteOzma im just saying that you have to analyze and childrend's cartoon so much and have to troll about it, and yes i will go to another channel

I buy dozens of DC comics every month, clearly it's something I enjoy the fact I analyze

and blog about it, and eventually plan to do video reviews, does not diminish that.. rather it's an extension of how much I respect the medium.

@PetiteOzma okay okay i get you i m just saying in shows such as, lets say barbie, boys are treated the same way as girls are in this.
