It never ceases to amaze me why people respond to the likes of Attenborough by saying things like "lets kill ourselves then, after you" when the actual proposed method for population reduction specifically was to lower the birth rate below the current death rate, not to raise the latter at all.
How retarded denialists can people get?

So true. The world is an OK place to live at the moment, there is enough space, food and water. Implementing somthing like this will take years, I dpn't want my 2 (!) kids to grow up in a world where we are fighting over food, or water (like in israel, golan heights). So it really is time to start now.
Well white people rarely have more than 2 kids anyway, so we all know where the real population increase is coming from. You can only stop the multiplying of the 3rd world by some how setting up in motion a mass castration policy. However, I doubt it would ever happen, unless you offer some sort of a financial benefits to the people who want to undergo such a procedure voluntarily.
I agree 90% as numbers make sense... but in the other side... is NOT population growth the one that drains the planet out of it's resources to sustain life, but how these resources are being administered, for a person from a 3rd. world country consums 1% than what a 1st world country person does... If it keeps up like that I don't see how much the natural resourses exhaustion may decrease anyways, but more land to be claimed by rich ppl, and less gardeners to America...
@trevgk I guess because it's a really touchy subject for governments as it would involve taking away peoples rights (even if it is just the right to have as many children as you want) so they just wuss out and don't even attempt to deal with the matter

The easy solution to overpopulation is development. As poverty ends, family planning begins and in all rich countries the birth rate has fallen. The root problem which needs to be addressed is poverty. Eradicate poverty and the global population should stabilise at about 9 billion.
How about limiting tax deductions for children? How about only allowing a couple to have tax deductions for two children. After that, they could have more kids, but it would be on their own dime. A local paper featured an article about a couple that had 8 foster kids and 9 kids of their own. They had been relying on the local food bank for 20 years. The front-page article was written as if they were good people. It absolutely made me sick.

I think Humans are not really intelligent. They are the most sapient species but they don't apply their knowledge effectively in the development/evolution of their society. A stupid species actually. In the other hand Ants do not know much but use every bit of the instinctual information stored in their tiny brains and communication for the future of the colony- they're perfect society, but no individuality though. I am not saying we should behave like ants but we could learn something from'em
Sociologists have proved that anything below about 2.1-2.3 birthrate means the death of a culture/civilisation (unless rapid immigration is initiated).
It is unfortunate that it is poorer people who are choosing to bridge (or exceed) this gap, so that more people are born into poverty.
Food shortages are not caused by too little food, or too many people they are caused by distribution failures. Starvation more often happens when people aren't entitled to food, not when there is none left. During the famines in British India and Ireland there were ships full of food leaving these countries as people starved to death, which agriculture was no longer for subsistence but to sell for cash..in capitalism everything is just a commodity after all
More problems more cancer more sickness more violence more wars more talk more leaders more lies more depression more hypocricy more consumption more oil more gas more pollution more religion more hate more weapons.
I look forward to hearing this same talk next year and the next year and the next year and in ten years twenty years fifty years untill we all wish we had woken up back in the 1970's or the 1960's or 2000 years ago when religious groups laid plans to control us.
That nations are encouraging population growth to take care of aging populations is a very important piece of this. An ecological Ponzi scheme indeed! That word needs to get out widely.
Directing our resources at better targets is a great message and with David speaking out "against the taboo" (taboo breeds busybodies - yuk - and encourages jobsworth behaviour) it is bound to help.
Fingers off panic buttons. I must though admit I was struck a smidge by the over abundance of alarmist rhetoric revealing ignorance on certain matters and having a member of the 'royal family' nodding in agreement and taking notes does not fill me with any great hope, perhaps little of the opposite.
fat chance. WW4 or WW5 is going to solve the population problem for good...i mean honestly, thats the only real way people are going to stop having so many babies
I believe there should be a limit on how many children you can have. If 1 man and 1 woman have 2 kids, the population will not change. If 1 man and 1 woman have 5+ kids, the world is doomed. Having more than 2 kids on purpose is selfish and uncaring. Adopt a kid if you want more than 2 kids, unless your kid(s) dies.
I'm glad I am not the only person that finds this logical.
this a mans or freemasons manipulation this plane for thear point of vision, man in greet, this is just more humand manipulation to just let know, you and me are the problem of this animal and disaster on this plane,..........look for the people how create this disaster, all this scam freeman people are the owners of the oil filles, and manny other sources and the moss bigers distructions in this plane. but you are the problem .........Think in all this BSSSSSS........
Room looks like a bunch of self-important, elitist and ironically old fuddy duddies who are "reading in-between the lines" and sagely smacking their lips at the prospect of some sort of mass culling as a solution.
I could never understand why some people want to have 10 or more it seems rather extreme, and as a female I would be happy with just having one child.
What's wrong with most people having only about two children? Voluntarily, of course. Women, for one, would be happy. Family planning should make people look askance at extraneous fecundity.
@dewinthemorning And yet there are literally millions of children without parents, without food or shelter and yet we continue - selfishly so, to burden our already weakened resources. Ethical speaking how can we justify what seems to be a purely biological urge.
@THEHARMONIKZ Biological urge? I don't think so. To have one child, or two, at the most, yes. But to have more children is not exactly biological urge, it's more down to ignorance (of contraceptives), old and backward traditions, and of course, religion and male dominance. How to act? To fight (in the world of ideas, of course) for the empowerment of women, giving freedom to the women over their bodies - contraception, abortion, if they desire it. The MAIN thing is, criticizing religion!
@dewinthemorning I heard not so long ago, that having only one child is contrary to eco-conservatism. You have to build more homes and apartments to sustain individuals who have certain social impediments, and less support network.
@alphamongrel I am not talking about the Chinese way (although it's probably necessary in their case), and I am not talking about only one child per se. If you love fully, take good care of, and raise carefully, one, two, or three children at the most should fulfill your life (and maybe leave you the chance to live a little bit of your life as well. With more children that's not possible.
@dewinthemorning I like how you're so narrowminded about having children. Suppose I want to have more than 3 and exhibit none of the reasons you posit?
@chemicallingo What if I consider you narrowminded, just popping out children, and not thinking of making them happy, giving them possibilities in life (good education), and having more possibility to have a life yourself...
I am not stopping you from having more children, Although why would you want a bigger quantity of children? One or two can fulfil your life.
@dewinthemorning If by "more" you mean MUCH more, I guess you would be totally right. Normally, there would be no corollary to support what you say, but schooling is free where you live, so I will forsake having an argument with you lol.
@alphamongrel Free? Or do you think it's better than yours, if you don't want to have an argument with me. Don't you worry, I'll refrain from it as well.
@dewinthemorning Oh. I am so sorry. I did not know that people in the Netherlands pay out-of-pocket for their college education. I live in the United States, and no, I don't particularly care for the education system here. It is run by crooks.
@alphamongrel I don't have first experience with education in the US, so I'll believe you. There are great intellectuals in the US, so maybe not everywhere is education run by crooks. But if about 50% of Americans don't 'believe' in evolution, I'll say the education in most of the country has a lot to be desired.
@dewinthemorning I think the whole world has "backward" tendencies, in the social arena. I see that we are evolving both physically and spiritually, but I tend to give people encouragement regardless of their belief system, as even the best of people have faults.
It's a biological urge to survive. If you live in abject poverty where your life span is half that in the West, you propagate to ensure the 'survival of the species'. Eradicate those concerns; poverty, disease, famine, conflict, and the urge to propagate diminishes as your survival becomes more assured.
@Rosbif86 I am afraid it's not so simple. It's true, in poor countries people tended (and so traditions formed) to have more children, because not all of them lived, and they wanted more working hands for the fields, but nowadays many other things contribute to more children - religion, men dominating women.
@dewinthemorning The correlations are undeniable. The same scenario was true in Europe before science, industrialisation and efficient agrarian practices lifted its people out of a subsistence existence. Large families were the norm. Yes, I take your point about social orders such as the church playing a role, but we had that SAME order before the Enlightenment as well. Education, of course, is also a massive factor in lifting people out of poverty and, indeed, ignorance.
@dewinthemorning This isn't acceptable as the core reason for propagation is rooted in fear (...unless the couple is entirely witless and have nothing better to do then to continuously engage in carnal knowledge...). As one grows older, the more children a couple have, the greater chance that one of the siblings will be able to take care of them wence they can no longer take care of themselves. Only two children is an exceptionally low number wence it is possible to have more then a dozen.
@dewinthemorning There is also the question of maintaining power/authority...if a family currently possesses a significant amount of power and/or money then it behooves said family to have as many siblings as possible so that at least ONE will inherit that which the older generation passes on. Those who seek to INCREASE their family's power and/or wealth will propagate extensively so that those who do not inherit, can branch out in othe areas coalescing even greater wealth/power to said family.
@mdlittle5466 You are right about the social reasons for more children (which have created the traditions) - who will look after the parents, maintaining power/authority, leaving inheritance... The latter two reasons are not valid for the majority of people, for which the former reason is more valid. But that desire can be answered by two children.
You must admit that there are not so practical reasons - religion, old traditions - which are just a burden.
@dewinthemorning Agreed, but the problem is educating/encouraging others to adapt this ideology. China made it 'a financial burden' to have more then two children. This concept would do well in America as well, assuming those who are impoverished would pay heed. However, MORE aid is offered wence more children are involved encouraging others to have MORE, not less, offspring. The issue has multiple problems facing it's inception that uneducated individuals may find difficult to understand...
@mdlittle5466 As far as I know, in China (when it reached a population of a billion) a couple is allowed to have only one child. That's why there are instances recorded of baby girls being killed, because some prefer a son.
I am afraid, in America, what you are suggesting is inapplicable, because it is inhuman to refuse help for already born children.
@dewinthemorning Again, agreed...which leads us to our current problem. We regard it as 'inhumane' to terminate the life of an unborn child, but in fostering propagation...we only fascilitate a greater burden upon the rest of humanity as a whole. In appending humanitarian efforts, we only cause greater problems until we resolve our current population crisis - I've been advocating the concept of expansion (...either into the ocean or to the nearest planet such as Mars...). Thoughts?
@mdlittle5466 " We regard it as 'inhumane' to terminate the life of an unborn child" WE? I don't, if it is unwanted, a result of a mistake. This is one reason why I, and many other people, have a problem with religion. A woman may make a mistake, or be raped. It should be up to her, if she is to keep the baby. When abortion is done early, it's not a person, just cells with a potential for a person.
I am wholeheartedly with you on expansion, which will probably happen in the future.
@dewinthemorning I have been in a running argument about overpopulation on a totally unrelated site, Its nice to see a entire group of people who see this as the very important issue that it is. I maintain overpopulation makes everthing else ( pollution, deforestation, extinction, etc ) worse. I am not against children, I have two. Political and religious leaders just ignore the problem.
@demonorse " Political and religious leaders just ignore the problem."
Yep, they do. Because they place above all themselves making a good living here and now, and don't care about the future of the planet or the future poeple.
@dewinthemorning I had been on a Richard Dawkins site arguing with more than one person, there are alot of nutty people out there, trolls. Saw a great speech on the subject, David Suzuki a Canadian.
@demonorse It's a sensitive subject, though (restricting the right of people who want to have many children). Maybe the main reasons for people having excessively many children, should be addressed - religions and traditions, springing from them, and subordination of women.
@dewinthemorning I agree, we can also add getting your own tv show to the long list of reasons. I don't see any restrictions working here in the states, the religious element would hit the roof.
@trevgk Thanks. It's madness, plain and simple madness to go on this way. Living in America, looking at the obese legions of poor people, it's enough to make a man lose his mind.
He neglects to mention in this speech that if we don't manage the resources that we have left more intelligently, we will end up in the exact same boat further down the road no matter what the population of the planet is. Support The Venus Project!

During the famines in British India and Ireland there were ships full of food leaving these countries as people starved to death, which agriculture was no longer for subsistence but to sell for cash..in capitalism everything is just a commodity after all

Sufficient living standard is best contraception. Fighting taboos is second.
That calls for fundamental changes of our predatory economy and culture.
I am not sure that cliques in power are ready to face such changes.
Disruption is most likely our only hope.

QuitePossiblyANinja 11 months ago
I believe there should be a limit on how many children you can have. If 1 man and 1 woman have 2 kids, the population will not change. If 1 man and 1 woman have 5+ kids, the world is doomed. Having more than 2 kids on purpose is selfish and uncaring. Adopt a kid if you want more than 2 kids, unless your kid(s) dies.
I'm glad I am not the only person that finds this logical.

Room looks like a bunch of self-important, elitist and ironically old fuddy duddies who are "reading in-between the lines" and sagely smacking their lips at the prospect of some sort of mass culling as a solution.

Not to worry, the fall of the US dollar will bring on a substantial decrease in population.
The elites are counting on it.

What's wrong with most people having only about two children? Voluntarily, of course. Women, for one, would be happy. Family planning should make people look askance at extraneous fecundity.

dewinthemorning 11 months ago 13
@dewinthemorning And yet there are literally millions of children without parents, without food or shelter and yet we continue - selfishly so, to burden our already weakened resources. Ethical speaking how can we justify what seems to be a purely biological urge.
THEHARMONIKZ 11 months ago
@THEHARMONIKZ Biological urge? I don't think so. To have one child, or two, at the most, yes. But to have more children is not exactly biological urge, it's more down to ignorance (of contraceptives), old and backward traditions, and of course, religion and male dominance. How to act? To fight (in the world of ideas, of course) for the empowerment of women, giving freedom to the women over their bodies - contraception, abortion, if they desire it. The MAIN thing is, criticizing religion!
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning I heard not so long ago, that having only one child is contrary to eco-conservatism. You have to build more homes and apartments to sustain individuals who have certain social impediments, and less support network.
alphamongrel 11 months ago
@alphamongrel I am not talking about the Chinese way (although it's probably necessary in their case), and I am not talking about only one child per se. If you love fully, take good care of, and raise carefully, one, two, or three children at the most should fulfill your life (and maybe leave you the chance to live a little bit of your life as well. With more children that's not possible.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning I like how you're so narrowminded about having children. Suppose I want to have more than 3 and exhibit none of the reasons you posit?
chemicallingo 11 months ago
@chemicallingo What if I consider you narrowminded, just popping out children, and not thinking of making them happy, giving them possibilities in life (good education), and having more possibility to have a life yourself...
I am not stopping you from having more children, Although why would you want a bigger quantity of children? One or two can fulfil your life.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning If by "more" you mean MUCH more, I guess you would be totally right. Normally, there would be no corollary to support what you say, but schooling is free where you live, so I will forsake having an argument with you lol.
alphamongrel 11 months ago
@alphamongrel Free? Or do you think it's better than yours, if you don't want to have an argument with me. Don't you worry, I'll refrain from it as well.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning Oh. I am so sorry. I did not know that people in the Netherlands pay out-of-pocket for their college education. I live in the United States, and no, I don't particularly care for the education system here. It is run by crooks.
alphamongrel 11 months ago
@alphamongrel I don't have first experience with education in the US, so I'll believe you. There are great intellectuals in the US, so maybe not everywhere is education run by crooks. But if about 50% of Americans don't 'believe' in evolution, I'll say the education in most of the country has a lot to be desired.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning I think the whole world has "backward" tendencies, in the social arena. I see that we are evolving both physically and spiritually, but I tend to give people encouragement regardless of their belief system, as even the best of people have faults.
alphamongrel 11 months ago
@alphamongrel You are absolutely right.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning
It's a biological urge to survive. If you live in abject poverty where your life span is half that in the West, you propagate to ensure the 'survival of the species'. Eradicate those concerns; poverty, disease, famine, conflict, and the urge to propagate diminishes as your survival becomes more assured.
Rosbif86 11 months ago
@Rosbif86 I am afraid it's not so simple. It's true, in poor countries people tended (and so traditions formed) to have more children, because not all of them lived, and they wanted more working hands for the fields, but nowadays many other things contribute to more children - religion, men dominating women.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning The correlations are undeniable. The same scenario was true in Europe before science, industrialisation and efficient agrarian practices lifted its people out of a subsistence existence. Large families were the norm. Yes, I take your point about social orders such as the church playing a role, but we had that SAME order before the Enlightenment as well. Education, of course, is also a massive factor in lifting people out of poverty and, indeed, ignorance.
Rosbif86 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning having only one child would eventually decrease population so everything else could live.
kaiagavin 11 months ago
@kaiagavin I definitely would. When would that happen, is anybody's guess. :)
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning This isn't acceptable as the core reason for propagation is rooted in fear (...unless the couple is entirely witless and have nothing better to do then to continuously engage in carnal knowledge...). As one grows older, the more children a couple have, the greater chance that one of the siblings will be able to take care of them wence they can no longer take care of themselves. Only two children is an exceptionally low number wence it is possible to have more then a dozen.
mdlittle5466 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning There is also the question of maintaining power/authority...if a family currently possesses a significant amount of power and/or money then it behooves said family to have as many siblings as possible so that at least ONE will inherit that which the older generation passes on. Those who seek to INCREASE their family's power and/or wealth will propagate extensively so that those who do not inherit, can branch out in othe areas coalescing even greater wealth/power to said family.
mdlittle5466 11 months ago
@mdlittle5466 You are right about the social reasons for more children (which have created the traditions) - who will look after the parents, maintaining power/authority, leaving inheritance... The latter two reasons are not valid for the majority of people, for which the former reason is more valid. But that desire can be answered by two children.
You must admit that there are not so practical reasons - religion, old traditions - which are just a burden.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning Agreed, but the problem is educating/encouraging others to adapt this ideology. China made it 'a financial burden' to have more then two children. This concept would do well in America as well, assuming those who are impoverished would pay heed. However, MORE aid is offered wence more children are involved encouraging others to have MORE, not less, offspring. The issue has multiple problems facing it's inception that uneducated individuals may find difficult to understand...
mdlittle5466 11 months ago
@mdlittle5466 As far as I know, in China (when it reached a population of a billion) a couple is allowed to have only one child. That's why there are instances recorded of baby girls being killed, because some prefer a son.
I am afraid, in America, what you are suggesting is inapplicable, because it is inhuman to refuse help for already born children.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning Again, agreed...which leads us to our current problem. We regard it as 'inhumane' to terminate the life of an unborn child, but in fostering propagation...we only fascilitate a greater burden upon the rest of humanity as a whole. In appending humanitarian efforts, we only cause greater problems until we resolve our current population crisis - I've been advocating the concept of expansion (...either into the ocean or to the nearest planet such as Mars...). Thoughts?
mdlittle5466 11 months ago
@mdlittle5466 " We regard it as 'inhumane' to terminate the life of an unborn child" WE? I don't, if it is unwanted, a result of a mistake. This is one reason why I, and many other people, have a problem with religion. A woman may make a mistake, or be raped. It should be up to her, if she is to keep the baby. When abortion is done early, it's not a person, just cells with a potential for a person.
I am wholeheartedly with you on expansion, which will probably happen in the future.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning I have been in a running argument about overpopulation on a totally unrelated site, Its nice to see a entire group of people who see this as the very important issue that it is. I maintain overpopulation makes everthing else ( pollution, deforestation, extinction, etc ) worse. I am not against children, I have two. Political and religious leaders just ignore the problem.
demonorse 11 months ago
@demonorse " Political and religious leaders just ignore the problem."
Yep, they do. Because they place above all themselves making a good living here and now, and don't care about the future of the planet or the future poeple.

@dewinthemorning I had been on a Richard Dawkins site arguing with more than one person, there are alot of nutty people out there, trolls. Saw a great speech on the subject, David Suzuki a Canadian.
demonorse 11 months ago
@demonorse It's a sensitive subject, though (restricting the right of people who want to have many children). Maybe the main reasons for people having excessively many children, should be addressed - religions and traditions, springing from them, and subordination of women.
dewinthemorning 11 months ago
@dewinthemorning I agree, we can also add getting your own tv show to the long list of reasons. I don't see any restrictions working here in the states, the religious element would hit the roof.
