I wanted to learn this song as I come from a long line of "Bluegrass" musicians in my family". My father used to play at the old Pan theatre in Portsmouth, had an aunt who played in a symphony orchestra in Ashland KY, with the passing of my father this summer I'm trying to find the older songs he used to do and keep them going as I can sing just like and sound identical to him...when I do them I tap into a memory of him and can see him performing the song....something I never want to forget.
The only thing I think Dave missed was some reference to the train tracks or such...they run with rt52 and set between the rd and the river....not so much in the present day, but up until the 80's the trains were running with coal up and down the river....coal dust covered everything and created damn near a permanant haze around the river.
Again rough area but some of the best natured and friendly folks you'll ever meet.
All of those towns are pretty "rough" so to speak. It's the foothills of Appalachia with a lot of bars, the local joke "back in the day" was that Ironton had either a bar or a church on every street corner...and that is pretty much a true statement.
Rt 52 is the major rt on the Ohio river from Cincy to South Point. It follows the river and you can view the river for most of the trip (Maybe 70 miles or so).
Enjoyed it..I love it. I am pretty confident that Dave hailed from Portsmouth Ohio, The "old queen city" is cincy, from there east (following the river "up stream") on rt 52 you hit Portsmouth which he did not put in the song, then hit "New Boston", then "Hanging Rock", then Ironton..Then onto the southern most tip of Ohio (South Point) where Ohio starts to border W VA...verses KY where cincy and the other towns border. I personally am from Ironton.
Ah singing bout my old stomping grounds. I pen'd one about the Waverly area last year and got a keeper...was looking for this one to sing with the guys when we get together..thanks for posting it...was a favorite of my fathers years ago when he played the banjo.
i have walked down the road seen all the places.

It's great to honor your dad in this way and keep his memory alive, by singing the songs he loved.
