@AzraelsCarmen He still snaps his finger when he's showing off. Same thing with Ten, he still used the key, he only snapped his fingers when he is showing off.

11's actually used the finger snap more times by this point. He tends to only do it in Moffat written episodes.

It's been written into the series for along time that he was very...affectionate with his TARDIS. In the School Reunion (is series 2, with the 10th Doctor) Sarah Jane Smith asks Rose if he still 'Strokes bits of the TARDIS'. Even if it wasn't on screen, it was always present in the background.
