  • That's awesome man! thanks for all this information!! :) I'm 29yrs old and I'm considering to go that way of owning a piece of property.

  • What an inspiration you are! My husband had to take an early retirement this year, knocking our income in half. We had to rent out rooms in our home to pay the mortgage and other bills. We have been trying to figure out how to get out from under this..and I think we just figured it out. Many Blessings from Oregon! We subbed ya!

  • What a great way to live!

  • No utilities? What's with the utility pole & power meter in the front yard?

  • @nchiker1971

There used to be a trailer with power here but the transformer was removed. The pole now holds up my wind turbine.

  • @solarcabin What ya do when they made all TV Digital a couple yrs ago? Did you lose TV?

  • Could my Girlfriend and I move in with You?We pay way too much and we have a lot of stuff. A little Chihuahua but he don't bother much.I play in a band so we'll have to practice there. We'll give you $100.00 a month then you'll actually be making money!

  • @solarcabin VERY nice!

  • I use to live like that in Mexico but i got greedy jump the fence and now am a Slave living in a bad dirty apartment in NY.

  • LOL great video though

  • This is a great video.

I've lived simply my entire life and agree with you about the freedom it brings. So many folks are brainwashed into thinking they need material things and then just end up working for things that depreciate down to nothing anyway.

Live by your own rules and enjoy life and your family! That's the way to go.

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • I love it. I'm just starting to plan my exodus from the rat race. What about doing laundry? How difficult is it to drill you're own well?

  • Hello. Im from Czech Republic and i adore you man. Hopefully i will have this FREEDOM in next couple of years. Good luck to you!!!

  • are you going to paint it?

  • @mikertones

    Maybe this year.

  • This is great..can I ask where this is located? What state? What freedom to have no mortgage..I can't even believe the power of living free with no bills..no more debt slave..Wouldn't a warmer climate be best to grow food?

  • @LessofmeMoreofJesus

The cabin is in Utah and we have a fairly long growing season.

  • Well Hello! From Show Low!

  • @motomech2001

    Hello!

  • BRILLIANT!!!! Nice Video!!

  • I like it, I might just have to look into this a little more. Thanks

  • Wow headed home to Colorado in spring...hey will be looking into homesteading.

  • I think you have the right idea. I envy you.

  • Comment removed

  • what about a hail storm or wind messin up those panels

  • @redbulljustice99

Panels are very sturdy with safety glass and can withstand wind and hail.

  • I got a charge out of hearing and seeing that this is possible. I like seeing this kind of community service you are providing. Thanks for making this vid.

  • how much is your property tax?

  • @atango7

    $170 a year

  • @solarcabin

I have experienced huge increase in property taxes in 10 year period in Florida. For some properties I paid more in taxes than I paid for the property itself. But roads and libraries did not change... They were built before property tax...

  • Nice! but You are still not free when you get a property tax bill every year.

  • @sail373

Property taxes are only $170 a year here and that pays for the roads, libraries and schools we all use.

  • Thank you so much for these videos!! I think exactly the same way. I'm now starting to build my own place very similar to that one. Just a little bit bigger, since my 4 cats & 3 dogs all eat & sleep inside. :D Cheers!!... And be happy!!! ;))

  • What if it rains!!!!!!!!!

  • Holy crap $400? Where I live in Canada they have some ads posted for 1 acre of land with nothing on it in the middle of no where (Perfect) for $99,000 -__-

  • did you hire someone to hook up thesolor panels would this work with a homemade Adobe/Mud House?

  • @pianosyrup123

I installed the solar and wind and videos of that are on my solarcabin channel. Yes this will work for any style home.

  • Did I miss it, but what about plumbing and most importantly sewerage?

  • @eastlight

Watch my other videos on solarcabin channel.

  • That is awesome! I'm at the point now where I'm trying to move out of the "folks" house. This is all I need! My first idea was to buy an old camper and rent or buy a small piece of land, but this is so much better. I could save up and build a small cabin, then save up for a metal building for a garage/shop! I'm glad I stumbled on this video. I'll be doing a lot of research on this, moving out doesn't seem so difficult now!

  • Thank you for producing this video. Planning on doing something like this in the future.

  • What state is this in?

  • @ManOfWealthnTaste

I am in Utah at the foot of the Uintah Mountains.

  • What a great speaker. Better than most people who try to explain things on youtube. Good job!

  • Looks like a sweet place. Much smarter than people who get a million dollar house they can hardly spend time in because they are too busy working crazy hours at the office in order to pay the mortgage on the house!

  • @newsjunkie3000

Exactly right- I have a modest home paid for so I don't have to work my butt off and can spend my money on helping my kids and doing the things I enjoy. That is true wealth!

  • @solarcabin why is men wealthy? my wealth is in my mind if its was on the bank i woulndt have wealth!

  • Not in nj

  • Awesome

  • Love it!!

  • I am ready for this lifestyle.

  • right but how do you get land

  • @neonbackpackk some local papers, especially independent ones, have advertisements for land. You can also find ads online.

  • This is how Jefferson started his house with a small central core

  • getting back to americas roots self sufficient beholden to no one. what more can a man want. roof over you head, food on table . rest is just pure luxury

  • Love it! I might do something similar one day.

  • I really like what you're doing and your cabin. Im currently collecting pieces for a cabin that im gonna build up on the mountain on old family land. Your videos inspire. Keep it up.

  • Think small. It's the way to go.

  • Liked and subscribed.

My sources tell me that you need 6 acres+ in Colorado to obtain water rights and allodial title. Those are good things to have when homesteading.

What if it only cost a few hundred more to make the cabin powered by water and electricity at say 2400 watts?

  • You inspired me a couple years ago, but I forgot, I'll do it this summer, I promise.

  • This is so smart . My problem is cleaning...you have solved this. we r not smart to spend our life paying and working and paying and working as we clean all the time. Good for you....

  • This looks really neat, like a little hunting cabin. I just wonder if you pay property tax or are you exempt from that because you own and live within a single acre.

  • I saw the washer and dryer sitting out there. How are they powered? Solar? On rainy days, does the dryer work as well as on drier days? Are they coin operated so that your neighbors can use them?

  • @balloonboyCA

The washer and dryer are now in my shed and I run them with a generator. If I could get my neighbors to wash my clothes I would let them use them for free LOL!

  • @solarcabin I just go down the hall for mine. :)

  • @solarcabin That would be a great plan!!!

  • @balloonboyCA silver and gold coins

  • "downstairs" ? Where the hell is the 1st floor anyway ? O.o

  • @cr4yv3n

Well, that main floor is the downstairs and the loft is the upstairs. Short stairs!

  • @cr4yv3n outside should be everyones main room.

  • You are a genius!!!! I am going to yur site.

  • County or city code enforcement issues???

  • @TheAliciabella

Depends on the county and many rural counties have few or no building codes.

  • your intelligence impresses me

  • Amazing!!! I am SO excited!! I am looking for a way to solar generate my home. Is that possible? I understand that i will not be as free as you. Yet, at least i will have partial freedom. I have a 5 year old. And we want to stay close to her school. Can you help us. I suppose what i am looking for is a solar generator. We are blessed to have a bay window on the south side. And boy, does that sun give off heat! Even warming the family room in January in Wisconsin. Any advice? Thx

  • @gg010170

Watch my videos on solar and wind installation.

  • Enjoyed the video! Has anyone told you that you sound like George Bush?

  • @elvis32z

    Oh God no!

  • @solarcabin No, he sounds genius!!!!

  • Great video - where is this located? I'm looking on eBay to find land only in TX or AZ..any other good places to start looking for land? Thanks

  • YOU are so neat! Good job! Very nice.

  • You should have built an earthship.totally self sustained. Look into it or biotecture.

  • All I want to comment about this vid is to say, A-MEN BROTHER!!!!!

  • Thank you for this! I'm stuck in a 30 year mortgage but plan on selling or renting out my home and moving out to the country or another country all together and building a simple house like this. Awesome stuff!

  • This is amazing. I've been interested in living a more simple lifestyle and this is very fascinating. I love it. I'm tired of paying monthly electric bills and being a slave as you said to the system. Great video.

  • do you pay tax for your land ?

  • Permits to build ?

  • @mba2ceo

Many rural counties have few or no permits required.

  • My Government doesn't want anyone to enjoy life

  • @TZ3z :'-(

  • Hi. I live in Ottawa, Canada. Could I buy land somewhere around Ottawa for cheap that doesn't have electrisity or water and live on it? How do I find out if I can legally do this in Ottawa?

  • Naaa,I would rather have a mobile camper type home. With the land to come home on.

  • this guy has got the right idea - my new 5 year goal is to have exactly this in northern Ontario.. Self-Reliance is key! thanks man

  • @PEEKProductionsTOR i would skip ont im from there i would highly suggest northen sask or northern BC im in northern bc the game populations are much higher here and i mean substansialy higher. the fur grade is also higher wich means more dollors i just had a add on kajiji looking to high some 1 for my trap line in the gta region had probably 400 hits in 2 days to say i found some 1 is a understantment

  • @nitroexpress700 Thanks for the info - I was thinking about 600-700 KM north of Thunder Bay - but I was also thinking, thats not far enough north if shit hits the fan - and now youve brought up many more quantifying reasons to leave ontario - Do you suppose northern SK and northern Manitoba are similar with respect to what benefits thei yeild? thanks again for the info nitro!!

  • livin the dream!

  • That is cool ;)

  • thumbs up for getting out of the system.

  • I love my traditional home and would never leave, but I truly appreciate this video and the lifestyle you have embraced. Maybe in another lifetime . . .

  • THATS COUNTRY LIVEN RITE THERE

  • You know middle class is broke... They tried to find down payment homes.

  • @InvestWebbot the middle class is broke?

I wounder why they are broke? made up wedding rings, made up ceremonies, made up titles, made up "urban" standard of living, made up mass-consumer society... If people turned off the TV and learned some trades and skills necessarily for survival they can all have happy and humble lives.

  • I would add more solar/ wind generators and sell what I don't use back to the grid. That way the property could pay for the property tax and other expenses such as heating as well

  • @KevinDR1987 thats a good idea, and depending on your legal know-how, you dont always need to pay property "tax", depending on the state/county your in

  • @UrSoMeanBoss good point. In some areas they are much lower than in other areas. But even if you are in a place where you don't need to pay property taxes I am sure you can find some other good uses for that extra income.

  • Its also good for poor people to live better and away from apartments ,mine is 16x 30 with room to grow ,but there's no rush also when im old we can sell and get better nursing home .

  • im in

  • great inspiration :-) i hope to do it one day too somewhere here in Scotland UK :D

  • great lifestyle sir

  • hey, thanks for posting this! i would like to get something built likke that, but i wish to use brick or concrete instead. it will last longer than wood. i will need a professional to built it for me since i'm a disable veteran.

i wish to leave the city to live on a farm. i have some relatives that used to live in the country. they moved to different parts of the country and the house that they use to live in is locked up.

  • Best video I have ever seen!

  • i live in mexico, and here we build houses of concrete and blocks, but that is very expensive, so i want to build a small cabin, but i have a question. i live in a very humid climate, it rains almost half of the year, can the cabin support that much rain?

  • @veganskator

Yes the cabin roof is designed for rain and heavy snow. I would use a metal roof and collect that rain for your uses.

  • @veganskator

Termite will munch your wooden house away in mexico in less than 3 years.

  • they ask a fortune for land in uk .they will not let you put any house up nothing

  • Hey, nice video. I did much the same thing here where I live. Got some land and built a small home. Just lived modestly but free and clear always. Now my property taxes are so high it crazy. 2600 bucks a year and I live way out in the boonies.

  • @1overthehillsfaraway I hate property tax...... It is the only thing in life you have to pay tax on over and over again, It is an issue that I believe Mob rule needs to resolve!

  • Thanks for doing this for people! Good job!

    Oh and RON PAUL 2012

  • Now that is a stress free environment, not like the system..with the mortgages leases bills

insurance etc. and really who needs a driveway...your house is simple & brilliant.

  • You have a great home! If only more people thought like you and I!

  • NOW THATS THE LIFE

  • @solarcabin: Ever thought of converting to biogas to save the $200 u pay for propane gas. You generate the waste for the biogas through kitchen waste and other waste products.

  • " A slave to the system"- thats exactly what I dont want. Great video. I wish I had some land now. :) Thanks.

  • Perhaps the mopst important thing you have done is to drill the water well. Well done.

But, the oppressors will be by to steal what you have, one way or the other, but keep working!

  • wunderbar

  • We had a "sugar shack" like this when we were first married, didn't ever get brave enough to quit and move out there but sure had fun dreaming about doing so! Its still there as a matter of fact!

  • I like the cut of your jib Mr.

  • i would love to live like you man my dream

  • That is the way to go. Be selfsufficient and independent.

Although Ill bet the land you bought wasnt cheap.

  • Thanks for sharing this! I think pride is probably the greatest hurdle for would-be homesteaders to overcome. "What would the Jones' think?" Chained by pride we become enslaved to a mortgage. Thanks again for sharing this.

  • fantastic! way to go!

  • Good for you! This is also a great idea for a cabin for summer and weekend getaways. Starting small and adding on when you can afford to is also a great idea. Thanks for posting.

  • I want to do this so bad! It would be great to have such a simple and easy lifestyle.

  • @dirtbikemike204

It really is a great lifestyle and I kick myself for not doing it when I was younger.

  • now power run out to that property? whats that light pole? it has a id tag number on it. that empty meter can on that light pole @ 4:41 still live on one side? just saying FREE POWER

  • @dwiggs77

There used to be a trailer and power on the property but they took out the transformer and just left the pole and wires. I don't want monthly power bills and having anyone control my power. I use the pole for my wind turbine!

  • I'm been interested in going off grid for awhile but one the biggest thing that worries me is how do you make money. Granted you don't need much to survive but I would still like to have some food and be able to buy gas here and there. How do you do it?

  • @Punchy4ever

I own a small local business and two online businesses. If you have a skill or talent start a business or make money from what you produce on your homestead.

  • @Punchy4ever I have lived off grid before, not hard at all....alot of residencial contruction companies higher under the table, at that point $8 an hour goes along way.

  • Man .. you guys have such cheap land over there.

Here in Denmark, the price is about 800 kroner per square meter, which equates to 140 dollar per square meter .. and you need about 4000 square meters to make an acre, so an acre of land in Denmark, zoned for all year habitation, would cost about 560,000 US dollar.

And you'd still need a house.

Yeah, that plan of yours don't work over here. :(

  • @Jesus45U population density and quality and demand of a particular plot of land is a major factor. you can buy in the middle of the desert for dirt cheap but who wants that? the U.S has 3.5 million square miles Denmark has 16,621so your land is at a premium with a population density 3.5 times ours

  • @dwiggs77

yeah, and it gets worse since we don't have any really useless areas, like desert areas, it's pretty much all usable. And then our government had a long think over how much land can be habitable vs how much is farm land ... too little farmland and we won't have enough food. So they limit the habitable zoned areas quite a bit, raising prices even more.

On a sidenote, I'm surprised our pop density is only 3.5 times higher.

And netherlands is 3 times more dense than Denmark.

  • @Jesus45U well those numbers do not represent the true figures there are plenty of unlivable or no desirable places to live here which dilute the figures. the whole state of Wyoming has less than 600,000 people where as my county in Florida (Broward)having 2/3 of it uninhabitable Everglades has a population of about 1.7 million... Wikipedia puts pop. in US @ 87.4 Denmark @334 and WOW Netherlands @ 1044.7 (all figures per sq. mile)

  • @dwiggs77

Yeah, it would be neat to see the population density on a per-state basis.

I think those numbers might change quite a bit, with the most northern areas having the least density because of all the farming there.

  • How much acres does one person really need?

  • @corndogers564

Unless you are going to raise large animals you can provide all the food you need for a family of 4 on one acre.

  • Also, don't you need permit to build anything ?

  • @SunnyMoon2010

Depends on the county and many rural counties have few or no building codes.

  • Building a house/dwelling on a vacant land has a new tax... Impact fee.. That ain't cheap..

  • @SunnyMoon2010

Property taxes here are $170 a year. Impact fees are rare for rural land.

  • You are good man

  • building a house is no easy task , i would have to hire someone to do it

  • Real pleasure to watch this video...shame more don't live like this...might be a better world if they did. I've designed a lot of alternative-power-systems for micro cabins, and there's no reason that anyone couldn't get into a total homestead-cabin for land and everything for less than $10k. Great work.

  • Drilling a well here in SE AZ averages $10K... with no guarantee you will hit water for less than $20K of drilling depth.

A catchment system is possible to live on (not with a roof area as small as this cabin) but water will always be on your mind and affect your lifestyle.

    Just sayin...

  • @edlee1969

Lots of different ways to get water to your property. Haul it in, drill a well, harvest rainwater, use springs, lakes and rivers. The size of the roof needed to capture rainwater would depend on how much rain you get. We have a high water table here and I hand drilled my well.

  • @solarcabin People dont want to use their brains anymore, or listen proplery...

  • @edlee1969 USe your imaginations.... Im gonna have a moat/pond around my house, with trees for shade to prevent excess water loss from directsunlight.

The moat/pond will be used to catch water, store water, process dirty water( by plant detoxification), sustain fish (raise fish to eat).

    So I has water captured and working for me =}

My house design is half underground with a patio green house design to make heating cost cost to nonexistent AFTER BEING BUILT.

    Just sayin...

  • how do you make poo poo

  • How do you get land for 400 dollars? Here in South Africa you wouldn't get an acre for less than 200 000 Rand.

  • @sphinxart

I don't know what 20,000 Rand is but sounds like a lot!

  • @solarcabin Yeah it's a fair amount ;-) the Rand is 8 times to the dollar, so 200 000 Rand is about 25 000 dollars.

  • you didn`t mention land taxes.

  • @loveisnow2

Property taxes here are about $170 a year.

  • Great Move! You are living the how is meant to be.... Now Farming and Life Stock right? Make your Property Line visible so there's no confusion...

  • How do you get internet service?

  • @Brie217

I have cell phone wifi and you can also use satellite internet.

  • @solarcabin How much does that cost a month?

  • I said all these because I had built a nice restaurant with 3-bedrooms upstairs, "in the middle of nowhere" as my ex-father-in-law complained . I ended up with a divorce and my life was finished in 1984 ! Gerorge Wu, AIA 2012-1-14

  • @georgewu5

I understand- you have to choose the right business for the right place. Never give up or let the bastards get you down!

  • You could live in a nice house like this in the middle of nowhere, without the money to but the gasoline to go to work to make a pay check, to pay the installment loan of your car, without the money to do the grocery shopping,... So what good is it if you could not get to a job to pay for all these? And how can you live on if you cannot get to work because the car dealer took back your car because you did not pay for over several months?.... George Wu, AIA 2012-1-14

  • @georgewu5

I own a small business and two online businesses. lots of work for people that are creative and you can always start a business. Where there is a will there is a way!

  • @solarcabin I came to this country to be a waiter, but I worked hard to be a licensed architect. I used my spared time for ten years to build a restaurant around an abandoned gas station, with 3-br with a full bath plus the two public toilets, I could not afford to hire a general contractor, so I used bolts and nuts to build the 3,000 s.f. building.A testimonial from Meryl Streep could not help the business because it is located in the middle of nowhere. So my wife divorced me. George Wu, AIA

  • what about land owners tax?

  • @kibbles306

Property taxes are about $170 a year.

  • AWESOME!

  • I wish I could do that here in Oregon. I would love to live in something like that and I could afford to do it right now. But in Oregon the state and county would probably hit me all kinds of fines and law suits and knowing me I would wind up in a shoot out.

  • Love it!!!

  • great videos and information.. keep it up!
