One thing is that he wasn't a huge safety but still played hard and was never afraid to sacrifice his body to make a play, a true team player. Every punishing hit he put out, his body was taking punishing damage too.
That's why you hear friend and foe alike have tremendous respect for his play.

The flagrant...at the beginning of this film he runs by Glenn Doughty of the Colts and clobbers him in the head, when Doughty was neither in possession nor about to receive the ball. That's not a "good hitter" that's assault and Tatum should've been fined if not taken to jail. Look at this clip, these are head blows not clean, hard-hitting football. What a joke!

Im just saying that he probably hurt himself almost as much as the defender leading with the head like he does. You can hit hard without putting your putting your head on someone else.

oh yeah for sure he got hurt too. I remember when they were talking about making it so that after catching a ball receivers can only be hit in the legs not above the waist. Now that would've messed up alot of people on both sides of the ball. If a defender hit low he risks injuring himself not only that but a majority of receivers would have a higher risk of injury since they don't expect low hits after a cath.

The list is regarding 'most feared tacklers'. Jack Tatum, all of his hits put an element of fear into the guys who got hit by him. If you want to include LT into the argument, the main difference would be that Tatum would be glad he took Thiesmann out. Irregardless of what you think of him personally, you have to agree, he was probably the most feared tackler of his time. He should be in the top three.

The more the players get once the money's been taken in, the better! It would be nice if ticket prices were lower, but whenever you hear "players make too much", it is nothing but class warfare: the owners would get it all if players weren't. A lot of the play today is unsportsmanlike, and should be treated as such. The NFL is a reflection of society.

When Jack 'The Assassin' Tatum nailed Eral Campbell, Tatum on only went down afterwards due to his sheer butal momentum and was never near being 'knocked out'; Campbell, however, was the only one virutally knocked out!
