  • I love mantids..... and I can just imagine myself when (hopefully) her eggs hatch. "This one's Bob, and Joe, and Fred, and..... Oooh! Ill name this one Daniella!"

    LOL

  • Great video! And the music was adorable- great job. I should have some baby mantises hatching in a few months *fingers crossed*

  • Hi everyone!

My mantis laid eggs last night and I have NO idea how to take care of them.

I have read people's advice saying to put them in the fridge for a few weeks and then pulling them out to hatch, but I have also heard keeping them at room temperature will allow them to hatch in 3-6 weeks. Which methood should i follow that would be best for the survival of the eggs?

    Thanks!

  • @MonsterHunterGirl98

It depends on what climate you are in. Do you have a real winter? If so, you will want to keep the egg case cold-either by leaving it outside in an unheated shed or garage. Otherwise, if your climate is temperate, it should develop on its own. If you keep it indoors and its actually cold outside, your mantids will hatch out and you will have hundreds of baby mantids to feed! Not an easy task!

  • @msbelliveau

    Thank you so much!

I live in Utah, so I will keep the egg case in our garage to keep them cool. How long will it take for them to hatch out? I have fruit flies to feed them if they hatch before winter is over. Thanks again!

  • @MonsterHunterGirl98 Well, there ar different theories. I would suggest keeping them in a warm place and sometimes they will winter over and hatch in spring. Has your mantis mated? If yes, then they will either hatch in spring or withing 65 days.

  • hey will they eat a infestation of boxelder bogs?

  • @Solidus43

    I don't think so....but not sure....

  • How much heat can an ootheca stand, I mean can it overheat?

  • @Joeshmo265

     I honestly don't know...

  • @msbelliveau :( oh thanks anyways, the reason i asked was because i ordered two egg cases and they were in the mailbox all day because they came early and I wanted to know if any of the babies might survive inside.

  • When full sized, could it eat a mouse?

  • @MissVillainess yes mice, hummingbirds, snakes, frogs, lizards, i even saw a video of one eating a goldfish

  • I have a question.I found an egg sack in Feb,2011 .I live in N.E. Pa.I brought them in the warmth to see if they would hatch.I have parrots .Their food produces these small white moths that are annoying, and very hard to get rid of.I figure maybe these mantis eggs will hatch and control the moth population. They call these moths white flies? Will these mantis live inside my house surving on these fly's,spiders, and other bugs ? Anyone ?

  • They are so cute! :)

  • so i have a egg sack from my vine outside, how many babies come out of it?

  • @TheCornBeef

Hundreds! Are you in a warm climate? If not, its best if you leave it outside until spring. Otherwise, they will hatch out and have no food source and end up eating each other. They are too valuable an insect to let that happen.

  • @msbelliveau its weird tho cause my area is cold right now, the inside of my house is warm, and i sound 6 more egg sacks outside. im keeping one inside. and jus gonna watch it. thanks for the reply btw

  • the beatles...nice! their song goes well with the mantis coming out.

  • So cool :) love the music you put in !

  • @jsantiii The first song is a Beatle's song, the 2nd is Dave Matthews. Not sure why it was tagged as just a Dave Matthews song. And please watch your language-there may be kids on this thread-not cool.

  • @msbelliveau My bad I got bored and only watched about 30 seconds. About the language, I thought I spoke mostly proper english?

  • @jsantiii You swore in between Dave and Matthews.....

  • do you know where I can get praying mantis egg cases? I know it's kinda late, but is there anywhere I can still get some?

  • @gchenfc I bought mine at Carolina Biological. You can buy them up until mid-June in a 3-pack (egg cases only-not the kit).

  • @msbelliveau I sometimes run into a deal at PetSmart for the flies. They tend to sit a little while there so haggle with them. I've gotten BOGO off a few dead flies in a vial. My nymphs were also a little intimidated by some of the larger flies, but they will eat when they're hungry. Quite a few of mine got over this by engaging in a little cannibalism till the flies became acceptable. Who wants the weaker ones anyway.

  • i got an egg case 2 weeks ago , i put the mesh bag on the inside of a paper bag , sealed it and put it on a window sell in the sun. how much longer? and is there a chance that it wont hatch?

  • @sk8trryan1997

Mesh bag? In a paper bag? Your egg case would do best in a screened box/habitat. It needs air as well as warmth. It also needs room for when they hatch out and when they do you need to give them water in a small, shallow dish. Could be another couple of weeks-hard to say.

  • @msbelliveau please help they hatch today and i have kept seven nymphs but none of them will eat the food i gave them they see it and either run away of get in stiking pose and dont strike . ive already gave them water though.

  • @sk8trryan1997 What are you feeding them? the best thing to feed them are wingless fruit flies-you can get them at most pet stores. Keep the water filled and hope for the best!

  • @msbelliveau Yes I agree. Stick to the fruit flies and a little misting of water.

  • does any one know if you can tell if there a boy or girl after hatching?

    , thanks

  • 2-3 weeks if kept at room temp...

So does it affect the speed of hatching if put in warmer temp? than just normal house temp

  • @bboikiller Yes. I brought in two egg cases that I placed outside to overwinter. Both laid by my pet mantis Emerald last fall, both hatched recently.

First born babies (of T. sinensis, the Chinese mantis) can be fed fruit flies (D. melanogaster) right away - cultures can be found at Petco in jars.

  • i live in montreal canada so right now lets just say its freezing lol but like i said too i dont kno if she is fertile or not

  • hey i bought a praying mantis at a pet store about a mth ago andi dont know if it is fertile or not but it just layed an egg sack in the corner i read fertile or not they lay an egg sack i also read that i should put the egg sack in a cool place and i read on a different site that just leaving it at room temp would be fine what should i do thanks

  • I guess it depends on when you want it to hatch out. Are you in a warm climate where you can let them go within the next month or so?

  • What species is this?

  • i got a case from outside today but idk if it already hatched is there any way i can tell if it did

  • Nope-no way to know.

  • My mantis just layed her case like, last night. How long does it take for it to hatch?

  • Usually 2-3 weeks if kept at room temp.

  • This happened in my room (accidentally) one time. they were all over me when I woke up one morning, and a lot of them dies due to me freaking out. After transporting most of them outside, I actually kept a few of them for about a month...

  • Nicely Brewed.Personally the mantice is my favorite insect and I'm glad i've seen another

Brew hatch. What you do with it is up to you but if you released atleast half of them thanks.

  • It was still early spring when they hatched (we are in the Northeast) and by the time we were able to release them, there were about a dozen left. Couldn't keep up with their appetites! We did release what was left.

  • mine came out on the 7th (about 15), the 9th(about 10) & only one today. i have 3 cases & so far only one has had them come out...

  • Make sure they have water (a few cotton balls in a small, shallow container) and get some fruit flies from the pet store for them to eat. If you add some fruit in the habitat, the fruit flies will multiply on their own. Good luck....or just let them go....they are good insects....

  • I hate the Beatles but I LOVE praying mantids 2 1/2 stars

  • someone gave me a "case" that's =age is not certain! I have succesfully hatched one previous case and have a wonderful screen house but do not know if I should put this in sheltered sun (it is not over 68 degrees here) or how long to: wait? How long do cases stay "dry" and when are the babies or eggs = gonners?

  • Not sure how long you'll have to wait. I would keep it in the shade or inside and just wait. It took longer than I expected and I bought it from a science supply house. Just make sure there's water in the screen house for when they do hatch.

  • can some one send me a message on how to step by step to take care of a mantis from newly hatched to adult?please!

  • First, make sure you have a small container of water with cotton balls in it (so they don't fall in and drown) in your habitat. They need water almost immediately after hatching. Separate them as much as possible or they will start eating each other. I fed mine wingless fruit flies that I purchased at Petco or PetSmart (don't remember which). You can then start your own colony of fruit flies by providing them fruit. Once they got bigger, I started giving them small crickets. Good luck.

  • i got an egg like that and sprinkled all of the baby mantids in my yard and found a foot longer in my back yard the next 2 months after.

  • wish i could hav one cutie like that

  • lol this hatched on my birthday just to clarify some comments I've seen.

    1. humidity does have to do with incubating the ootheca

    2. cannibalism usually starts when they're L2 or L3 for this species (chinese mantis)

    3. you can release this species and can by ootheca for like 10 bucks at home depot or other gardening shops.

  • I've been waiting seven months :(

  • Where did you get the egg case from? Did they have any kind of guarantee?

  • why do you keep them, for gardening or what??

  • I bought the egg case for my classroom-life cycle. We had to keep them for a short period of time because our weather in the north east was still too cold to let them go. They area a beneficial insect-they eat other bad insects.

  • We kept them for awhile to watch them grow-life cycle stuff. And we had to hold on to them for awhile because it was too cold to put them outside. They are a beneficial insect, by the way.

  • how long does it take for the case to hatch and what website did you get it from

  • I ordered it from Carolina Buglogic Supply. It took over a month to hatch out and when it did, it was too early to release them (early April in New England-too cold). So think about that when you are ordering....

  • it took longer than we thought..be patient...we waited over a month if I remember correctly.

  • plz tell me how to prevent my egg cases from drying out. i wait and wait for the egg cases i find outside, then after acouple of month i slice it open and all i see is the black, hard bodies if the mantids. i lose hope in raising them. plz help :'(

  • hhmm..I didn't have any trouble with mine but I ordered it through a science supply house. Maybe try misting it with water once every day?

  • THANKS FOR THE HELP!

  • if i get it on mailorder in a cup or something, do i just leave it there till they come out or...

  • it should come in a container of some sort. Mine also came with a habitat. If you just order the egg case, make a habitat out of cardboard, cut windows in it, and cover the windows with some kind of screening. We attached our egg case to a small branch with a bit of white glue and stood it up in the habitat. Then all you do is wait. BUT-make sure you give them a small cup of water with some cotton balls in it (so they don't drown) as soon as they hatch!

  • OHH CRAZY! i wanted to get an egg case, but i want them to stay alive! =(

  • BUT-if they hatch while the weather is warm, you could release them.....I know you're not really supposed to though....but its a thought. By the way, you get HUNDREDS of them...

  • will the babies eat eachother?

  • Yes...and they did......we fed them flightless fruit flies but couldn't keep up with the demand....

  • COOL! My egg case looks like it is dry. The case is changing and some holes have developed but nothing alive has hatched. Is there a specific humidity that they need?

  • Ours was dry looking, too. Just be patient. We thought ours would never hatch out! I don't think humidity has anything to do with it but temperature might. Make sure its not too cold in the room.

  • Thank you.
