Most of that footage was filmed from Memphis Belle the Movie. A camera man was aboard the Belle and filmed the action. That famous B-17 falling out of control and almost evert bombing scene from movies is from the Belle's last mission to bomb the docks at Wilhamshaven. Don't think I spelled that correctly but in the other movie ( with Private Joker and Rudy) they said the mission was Bremen. Also a tough target inside Germany. Can anyone answere why they historically made it inacruate? T
The 262 far underdeveloped. It was a glorified kamikazee plane, as it sometimes went back to base, unlike the Jap planes. It killed more German than allied airmen.
The first operational fighter in operation to "fight the enemy" was the British Meteor. The 262 was in a squadron for testing purposes first, which met a Mosquito which flew off. The Meteor was first to shoot down an airborne weapon - which was also a jet.
No fake...rockets are known since the chinese dynasty developed black powder and created fireworks so the word "rocket" is known in the english language, by the way at this time of the war germany already had the V1 rocket...
The R4M rocket was the first practical anti-aircraft rocket. It was developed by the German Luftwaffe during World War II and used briefly before the end of the war. In April 1945, R4M-equipped Me 262s claimed to have shot down thirty B-17s for the loss of three aircraft. (taken from Wikipedia)
@xeppo The Nazis were basically the ones who invented the rockets and missles we have today. Our ICBMs and space rockets were made possible by captured Nazi V1 rocket technology and captured rocket scientists like Werner Von Braun. I would hazard to say that if the war would have lasted a few years longer and/or the Germans would have started seriously producing this stuff sooner, we might have had a bit of a problem there. In WWII the Germans were ahead of us technology-wise on most fronts.
Indeed. Look, a B&W version of the same fake combat encounter. The original Memphis film footage was silent, and the radio chatter was added in later. The Me262 is a spliced-in fake. I expect to see a new version with a Japanese Zero next. Or maybe a Mig-29....hmmmmmm, that gives me a clever idea.
