@masanf Yep. I was on his campaign and they were gaining some steam, cutting a 20-point lead down to eight points. Ocne that line came out, we all KNEW it was over. It was so sad.

Next to "You're no Jack Kennedy," this is probably the best presidential debate line ever. Even Mondale's people knew how great it was.

@BettorOffSingle I was watching this with my first wife when we were just dating. She was so convinced Mondale was going to pull it off, but after this line, I took one look at her and said, "SLAM DUNK! GAME OVER!" And it was!

@masanf Mondale and everyone on his campaign knew. The age issue was real, thanks to the first debate. People had genuine doubts about Reagan, who may have displayed his first sign of Alzheimer's here. Reagan made sure never to be caught "napping" like that again, and this was just the icing on the cake. At the time, the Soviet and Chinese leaders were also elderly.
