  • The animation kinda ruined it

  • this is amazing. I don't normally like translated opera and even making movies out of operas (because it's rarely done this well), but this is sublime!

  • Anyone have the lyrics somewhere??

  • "The light of true learning is stronger than war, and mankind is yearning for peace evermore."

  • the one who disike is Salieri!!!

  • @MessageDragonTan Salieri was not an enemy of Mozart

  • @RoadlessPath This is what hollywood wants us to believe

  • SAY YOU'LL BE MY HANDSOME LOVER.... SAY YOU'LL BE MY WIFE FOREVER.

    I will. %)

  • LOLOLOL THIS IS NOT HOW THE OPERA WENT BUT I LOVE THISSSSS

  • What the hell is Hitler doing signing witht the choir? Mein Gott!!!

  • @Lord7777777 I'd rather have him singing then marching.

  • che attrice la regina della notte :,)

  • Porque la reina de la noche escala si podía volar?, según vi cuando canta su segunda aria...

  • Moved to tears...I'm so grateful for this being posted. What a moving adaptation.

  • I really didn't like the treatment of the Queen's arias, but this is the best ending of the Magic Flute I've ever seen.

  • Supaar Slapp!!! (¯-¯)o (#—.-)

    no but great opera!

Ich liebe die Zauberflöte für immer als mein Favorit

Daumen nach oben, wenn Sie Google übersetzen verwendet:)

  • english opera it's a nightmare

  • @ileaveyou

What makes it so much worse?

  • @ileaveyou In this case the quality of the translation by Stephen Fry made it better than the German text.

  • @ileaveyou I don't suppose you like Gilbert & Sullivan then, or do you. ?

  • A brilliant adaptation, nowhere more than the finale. The only thing to criticize is his choice to treat the Queen's arias as satire, particularly as satire that is not funny.

  • From this to "Thor"...

  • @mozurkz Doing Thor is what lets him do these.

  • @mozurkz Thor is the best super hero movie out...c'mon! obviously nothing compared to this but way better than others of the genre

  • I am truly impressed. I have seen several works by Branagh and has not failed to impress me. Mozart was a genius with music and although I had to watch the entire opera via You Tube (since it was never released in the States) - I enjoyed every minute. No matter what weaknesses there may be with some of the singers I recommend this showing to everyone.

  • Where I live it is impossible for me to see this great film so a thousand thank yous to you for down loading here. Napsuta

  • aww, he tried to save her . . .

  • Bravisimo & Magnifico! Truly a most brilliant interpretation done in the true spirit of the inspired Amadeus! My favorite has always been Ingmar Bergman's sublime version. PBS did a very good traditional presentation of this opera about a year ago. I will look for the DVD of this excellent production on Amazon. Again, "Bravo!"

  • The casting is just wonderful!!! For all I know, Mozart would indeed be proud!!

  • A lovely production!

I don't know about the 'nod' to domestic violence in this scene, though. Otherwise I really enjoyed this!

    Thank You OperaFan1975!

  • ok THIS is how you make a movie of an opera

  • That was the best I have ever seen ......... wow. That was spell binding

  • Papagenas dress looks like swedens national costume :P

  • what song is this called

  • If they can fly why are they climbing the castle?

  • @Radetzky19 Because their powers don't work on Sarastro's territory, duh! No, I have no idea, because it would look stupid if they flew up to the window (while singing!)?

  • @moltoallegro19 yeah lol I guess we just have to use our imaginations :p

  • @moltoallegro19 they could take the elevator or be chuted

  • @Radetzky19 maybe because monostatos can't fly and maybe because he's the only one to know the good window to open! And I wonder why Sarastro didn't keep stronger the queen's hand at 4:00 we can see that it's only the queen who takes the hand

  • holy shneid! how do they have a kid already?

  • a wonderful video! each time I see this part of the opera, I sence some chemistry between the Queen of the Night and Sarastro

  • Am I missing something, or did I actually get to the end and they skipped the Trio?? "Soll ich dich, Theurer, nicht mehr seh'n"? nicht cool. This Papagenna is adorbs, though.

  • I thought they could fly

  • @sebrobe53 maybe there will be a magic flute the second with the coming bach of the queeeeen against the tamino's son…

  • @mouthmouse There won't be. This opera was composed in 1791, and it would be blasphemy to compose a sequel.

  • @al1936ful Blasphemy or not there do exist sequels to it. The first being written by Schikaneder and Peter von Winter and premiered in 1798

  • @Quotenwagnerianer Also a libretto for a sequel by Goethe, but never used by a composer.

  • @Quotenwagnerianer I don't suppose you'd know where the 1798 opera (esp. a translation), might be posted to the web?

  • @sebrobe53 I think he goosed her. :)

  • Look at Papageno and Papagena from 7:00 until Tamino throws the flute into the air. What did Papageno do? LOL

  • I wish there were subtitles.

  • why ladies don't fly ?

  • Lovely Silvia Moi!!!!!!

  • tha launch of the flute to air recalls me Kubrikcs 2001

  • jajajajaja papageno, papagena.... and the chicken!!what a trio.

  • I like the original better, but this is a really cute movie with some great moments. I liked the casting, too. Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry did a great job with this interpretation.

  • Papagena's voice is so much richer than Pamina's...

  • I just love that series of chords between 6:52 and 6:59, which Mozart uses so frequently throughout his works!!! Just adorable and the perfect end for a piece of music (which Mozart also must have known giving thought to the fact that he used it in, like, half of the songs he ever wrote for an opera).

  • @moltoallegro19

    ii6,I6/4,V7,I

    If that makes sense.

  • @iupetre Yeah, it does. Even if we don't use those names in Europe.

  • A wonderful ending for a wonderful adaptation of a wonderful opera (lots of wonderful used)

I never thought that the legendary Magic Flute could be perform in any other language than german and this movie proved me wrong

  • It's okay and easy on the ear, but I feel like there's something lost, it has a slight "musical" quality about it. I only know enough of German to say that in the original, I am able to make out more than I am able to with most English versions. Just my two cents'.

  • Any translation spoils the original. Even more for the many purists on youtube (Loads!!!), but since I am not one of them, I quite like this version ^^ This part is ...... whoa!!!

  • @cazonetta I agree, usually some plot notes change in translation. Like the usual one which changes in this opera is that Sarastro becomes Pamina's father, when he isn't in the original German libretto. I can understand why it's done (to simplify the plot & justify Sarastro's taking of Pamina)--but in the original Pamina's father died and told his wife that she--royalty--would have to listen to the Sun Priests who he gave the source of his power (seven-folded-sun disk) to.

  • @cazonetta Word limits suck. The story looses something when that's edited out. Instead of being a large critique of royalty, divine right royalty, & royal succession, that message, while still present, is partly distorted. IMO, the original opera is much more glorifying to the triumph of enlightened & individual thinking & the common brotherhood of men. It's a small change, but it effects how things are interpreted. One good thing about it though, is it makes the QOTN a more human character.

  • M-E-R-A-V-I-G-L-I-O-SO

  • I will buy this DVD and contribute it to the Church I attend.

  • @josephonwhidbey You can't buy it in the U.S. unless you have a region free DVD player. It hasn't been released in Region 1.

  • Terrific movie. Kenneth Branagh triumphs yet again. Mozart would be proud.

  • In minute 5:32 appears Hitler!!!!

  • Better dancing then marching I always say

  • BRAVO!!!!

  • The most gorgeous version of this opera ever. This will become Branagh's most acclaimed film.

  • Kenneth Branagh is one of the greatest actors, directors & writers of this generation. In addition to films ("Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," etc) that have been unfairly maligned and failed at the box office, this movie is another triumph for Mr. Branagh.

  • @ShakespeareHamlet dont forget wolfgang amadeus.

  • @ShakespeareHamlet o.O His interpretation of Hamlet was terrible. He was the worst Hamlet I have ever seen.

  • Until he directs another one and he will.

  • Ingmar Bergman's version (1975) is a model for this film heavily influenced by it.

  • @P1B1U1H1 I'm not sure about that, although it is excellent.

  • @P1B1U1H1 We will be lucky if it gets noticed in the U.S. It still hasn't been released here.

  • Thanks so much for uploading this, operafan1975.

  • Not a full half-tone but sounds like it to me too. "Heil sei euch" is in E-flat and this does sound high to me.

  • Sweet performance, though the translation stumbles in a few spots.

  • that duet is soooo fun to sing :) (papageno papagena)

  • The Papageno and Papagena duet was the first classical piece that I ever heard. When I heard the duet for the first time I knew what god wanted me to do: Become a musician. I have followed God's order.

  • The guy in the second song is fantastic! who is he???

  • Tom Randle

  • *stands up, applauds, and shouts, "Bravo!! Bravo!!"*

I love this movie, even more than the two traditional German versions I have.

  • agree, i love it too...so much

  • :D I liked that ^_^ good movie, even if it does lose a little in translation :(

some phrases just don't sound as cool without german xD

  • actually, i´m a great fan of this new version, even thought i´ve been raised on the german original and it is very dear to me (i´m german, btw). but stephen fry´s libretto does away with some of the too pompous-sounding and patronizing parts of the original which i always thought amusing, but just a bit too heavy ... so i´m very glad here!

  • we need subtitles

  • I can't help but sing (and think) along in German-- but what I can understand of the English sounds like a veyr good rendering! I wish indeed it had text on the screen.

  • i'm not fluent in German but I prefer the German version...

I compare this unfavorably to the English version of "99 Luftballons"

  • Actually, it's been presented in ways, before this one, that Sarastro & the Queen are the estranged parents of Pamina, & that their estrangement has brought rise to two opposing kingdoms

  • that is what i assumed when i first saw this opera. that makes alot of sense. :-)

  • i love the first part, pa pa pa, i really love papagena's dress! :-)

  • So it's continually hinted at that Sarastro and the Queen of the Night had a relationship in this version of the Opera.
