this is amazing. I don't normally like translated opera and even making movies out of operas (because it's rarely done this well), but this is sublime!
A brilliant adaptation, nowhere more than the finale. The only thing to criticize is his choice to treat the Queen's arias as satire, particularly as satire that is not funny.
I am truly impressed. I have seen several works by Branagh and has not failed to impress me. Mozart was a genius with music and although I had to watch the entire opera via You Tube (since it was never released in the States) - I enjoyed every minute. No matter what weaknesses there may be with some of the singers I recommend this showing to everyone.
Bravisimo & Magnifico! Truly a most brilliant interpretation done in the true spirit of the inspired Amadeus! My favorite has always been Ingmar Bergman's sublime version. PBS did a very good traditional presentation of this opera about a year ago. I will look for the DVD of this excellent production on Amazon. Again, "Bravo!"
@thesir27 ok THIS is how you make a movie of an opera
Spot on. Losey (pityful Don Giovanni), Bergman (spotty Zauberflöte) and Zeffirelli (despite his La traviata masterpiece) are all dwarfed here. This is the work of a genius.
@Radetzky19 Because their powers don't work on Sarastro's territory, duh! No, I have no idea, because it would look stupid if they flew up to the window (while singing!)?
@Radetzky19 maybe because monostatos can't fly and maybe because he's the only one to know the good window to open! And I wonder why Sarastro didn't keep stronger the queen's hand at 4:00 we can see that it's only the queen who takes the hand
Am I missing something, or did I actually get to the end and they skipped the Trio?? "Soll ich dich, Theurer, nicht mehr seh'n"? nicht cool. This Papagenna is adorbs, though.
I like the original better, but this is a really cute movie with some great moments. I liked the casting, too. Kenneth Branagh and Stephen Fry did a great job with this interpretation.
I just love that series of chords between 6:52 and 6:59, which Mozart uses so frequently throughout his works!!! Just adorable and the perfect end for a piece of music (which Mozart also must have known giving thought to the fact that he used it in, like, half of the songs he ever wrote for an opera).
It's okay and easy on the ear, but I feel like there's something lost, it has a slight "musical" quality about it. I only know enough of German to say that in the original, I am able to make out more than I am able to with most English versions. Just my two cents'.
Any translation spoils the original. Even more for the many purists on youtube (Loads!!!), but since I am not one of them, I quite like this version ^^ This part is ...... whoa!!!
@cazonetta I agree, usually some plot notes change in translation. Like the usual one which changes in this opera is that Sarastro becomes Pamina's father, when he isn't in the original German libretto. I can understand why it's done (to simplify the plot & justify Sarastro's taking of Pamina)--but in the original Pamina's father died and told his wife that she--royalty--would have to listen to the Sun Priests who he gave the source of his power (seven-folded-sun disk) to.
@cazonetta Word limits suck. The story looses something when that's edited out. Instead of being a large critique of royalty, divine right royalty, & royal succession, that message, while still present, is partly distorted. IMO, the original opera is much more glorifying to the triumph of enlightened & individual thinking & the common brotherhood of men. It's a small change, but it effects how things are interpreted. One good thing about it though, is it makes the QOTN a more human character.
Kenneth Branagh is one of the greatest actors, directors & writers of this generation. In addition to films ("Mary Shelley's Frankenstein," etc) that have been unfairly maligned and failed at the box office, this movie is another triumph for Mr. Branagh.
The Papageno and Papagena duet was the first classical piece that I ever heard. When I heard the duet for the first time I knew what god wanted me to do: Become a musician. I have followed God's order.
actually, i´m a great fan of this new version, even thought i´ve been raised on the german original and it is very dear to me (i´m german, btw). but stephen fry´s libretto does away with some of the too pompous-sounding and patronizing parts of the original which i always thought amusing, but just a bit too heavy ... so i´m very glad here!
I can't help but sing (and think) along in German-- but what I can understand of the English sounds like a veyr good rendering! I wish indeed it had text on the screen.
Actually, it's been presented in ways, before this one, that Sarastro & the Queen are the estranged parents of Pamina, & that their estrangement has brought rise to two opposing kingdoms
The animation kinda ruined it
