This documentary is focused primarily on the Eastern front and the Soviet Union. Secondly, allied troops in the west did not develop a reputation for rape and barbarity, other than for allied bombing. The soviets committed the overwhelming majority of rapes. German civilians and soldiers would be relieved to fall into the hands of the western powers, where they wouldn't have to fear any death marches back to Russia where more than half the prisoners were never seen again.

To this argument, I ask why after Russia declared war on Japan in 1945 and invaded Manchuria, did the Russian army rape, pillage, and steal in the same exact fashion as they did against Germany, when the Japanese had never done anything to them? True, but as history has proven. After a conflict is over, it doesnt take long for those old hatreds to die down. Usually enemies of the past can have good relations soon after, and even become future allies. Examples like Japan and USA, Italy and Germany, East Germany and USSR. This can happen the other way around too. Look at the Soviet-Sino split, or Vietnamese-Sino war. Or Cambodian-Vietnamese war, despite having similar ideologies and previous co-operation. Diplomacy is an odd thing.

But this was more due to the character of the Bolsheviks than due to revenge, as the Red Army soldiers were as ready to murder Polish prisoners when the Soviets were allied to the Nazis. Nor were the Eastern European civilians treated any better by the Marxists once they were "liberated" and subsequently occupied for 40 years by the Red Army. Many nicknamed the USSR the "Fourth Reich".

@moOswe: do some further reading. When the 6th army surrendered in Feb, 1943 the enlisted men were starved into near death from lack of rations while the officers were pretty healthy. Of those 5% that survived guess which group was heavily represented? The VAST majority of the surviving 6th army died pretty much very soon after the surrender as they were already near death and the Soviets just weren't prepared to care for that many dying soldiers in the midst of war.
@moOswe: if you look at the numbers of German soldiers captured AFTER Stalingrad that died in Soviet captivity it's actually pretty low BUT they were sentenced to the gulag and most captured German POWs of the Soviets wouldn't see Germany for a decade after the war ended.

A survivor from the soviet death camps visited my school when I was 15 and spoke about the conditions and how they were treated there. He wasent german but he was in the exact same camps as the germans.

No one is gonna claim the Red Army soldiers were honor guards but the Red Army soldiers operated on a simple fact of vengence: in Romania and Hungary, BOTH COUNTRIES HAD SENT TROOPS INTO THE SOVIET UNION WITH THE GERMAN, Red Army soldiers far less raped and instead robbed folks. Even in Austria the incidence of rape was low compared to robberty. But it was the Germans - seen as the evil ones by Soviet soldiers - who the Soviet unleashed their fury and revenge.

All thru the Cold War the "victimized" Germans got to tell their side of the "horrific Red Army" as the Russians were the bad side. With the demise of the Soviet Union and the Cold War over more and more is finally being told in the West/United States about the massive atrocities the nazis commited in Russia and this balance should allow for a better aknowledgement of why there was the behavior in Germany by the Red Army as there was without excusing the behavior of the Red Army.

Most of the death in Iraq were due to Sectarian violence, and the statistics ranged from 38,000 to 79,000. The interviewer at 4:20 implies that the Russians committed atrocities in response to the earlier behavior of Germans against Russians. To this argument, I ask why after Russia declared war on Japan in 1945 and invaded Manchuria, did the Russian army rape, pillage, and steal in the same exact fashion as they did against Germany, when the Japanese had never done anything to them? Germans were horrible here, Russians were also, and would have been that way regardless of German behavior.

They fought three wars between one another since the late 19th century. Including one as recently as 1939. Zhukov won that engagement and peace was settled quickly.

True, but as history has proven. After a conflict is over, it doesnt take long for those old hatreds to die down. Usually enemies of the past can have good relations soon after, and even become future allies. Examples like Japan and USA, Italy and Germany, East Germany and USSR. This can happen the other way around too. Look at the Soviet-Sino split, or Vietnamese-Sino war. Or Cambodian-Vietnamese war, despite having similar ideologies and previous co-operation. Diplomacy is an odd thing.

@badface6 The Nazis treated Russian prisoners like slaves - or worse - and the Red Army returned the favor. But this was more due to the character of the Bolsheviks than due to revenge, as the Red Army soldiers were as ready to murder Polish prisoners when the Soviets were allied to the Nazis. Nor were the Eastern European civilians treated any better by the Marxists once they were "liberated" and subsequently occupied for 40 years by the Red Army. Many nicknamed the USSR the "Fourth Reich".

I dont say east or west are better. This was was so brutal and so many civilians died. It's just very sad. And human history is sad.

At the very outset of the campaign Stalin told the world that the Red Army would not observe ANY of the Geneva Conventions!
Even at the beginning, the Red Army captured German soldiers... however few... and treated them barbarically. Think NKVD interrogation.
This merely compounded the hell of the frontline soldier. Hitler had already taken note of Stalin's edict and commanded that his army do likewise.
Some of this is repeated by Taliban: don't get captured!

@moOswe: do some further reading. When the 6th army surrendered in Feb, 1943 the enlisted men were starved into near death from lack of rations while the officers were pretty healthy. Of those 5% that survived guess which group was heavily represented? The VAST majority of the surviving 6th army died pretty much very soon after the surrender as they were already near death and the Soviets just weren't prepared to care for that many dying soldiers in the midst of war.

@moOswe: if you look at the numbers of German soldiers captured AFTER Stalingrad that died in Soviet captivity it's actually pretty low BUT they were sentenced to the gulag and most captured German POWs of the Soviets wouldn't see Germany for a decade after the war ended.

A survivor from the soviet death camps visited my school when I was 15 and spoke about the conditions and how they were treated there. He wasent german but he was in the exact same camps as the germans.

Good answer to a very silly question by the German veteran.
The guy was defending his country from the "asian hordes" out of the Soviet Union keen on taking revenge on Germany. Then what the hell does at matter at that point WHY they want to take revenge?
The interviewers in this documentary are the weakest link for sure.

The truly horrible part of the whole thing is that Stalin might not have been the greatest murderer in all history. Mao at least runs him very close, and may have killed more - using Stalin's own preferred methods: planned famine and the gulag. And, like Stalin, he died in bed, of natural causes, at an advanced age.

Well, actually seems that the chief of NKVD Beria poisoned Stalin either for succeding him and for saving his own life.
However I do agree with you, Stalin is surely one of the most bloody-handed criminal in history.

70 million killed by stalin has to be nonsense. Why not make it a billion? 70 million would have almost half the population rounding up the the other half for execution. He was bad enough without making it ridiculous.

he ruled soviet union since Lenin's death until in1953, in this period there were civil war, war with Japan, big famine in ukraine (about 6 000 000 died) and many many other, there is not enough place to write about everything, read somethig about this subject and then comment, think it dosen't hurt
