@codemsan if you learn how to use Linux, unless you are a graphical designer or something like that.... In a world without walls and fences, who needs windows and gates? ;-)
man WD SUCKS!! had my 500gb MyBook for not even a year and i had to reformat the partition table(because it was corrupted) twice!! my first and last wd drive that is ever coming into my house!!!
@bradman5505 yeah thats mostly WHY i posted this video, because of soo many failures, and acually alot of partition table corruption and loss of data is caused by the same faulty driver board that leads to a seemingly dead drive! i dont like there external at all, and i dont HATe there HDDs, but there nothing to write home about...
when, I hook up my drive in the desktop (hp pavillion q6600) it sees the drive in device manager but I cant access the files in my computer, the same issue with my dell studio 1530.
@InvisibleRefugee2 dont give up though! you may be able to find a cheap SATA - USB driver or IDE - USB depending on what type of drive your mybook contains. its almost always the USB driver board within the unit that fails so it may be worth t to find a new driver
my old 250GB my book just failed me. So I ripped the case open with some fury and found out it was using an IDE interface lol. Hooked it up in my old comp and all my data is still there. I love WD drives, but hate mybooks with a passion, i mean its not a fucking book man.
@rekkapower Yeah, most drives fail simply because the USB-SATA or IDE adaptor blows. and i agree they suck, but that drive to this day lives on inside my computer
I am having a problem with mine. The usb plug broke in mine and I took my WD MyBook apart and plugged it in and everything. The WD MyBook is on the device manager, but does not show up as a drive in my computer. How can I get it to show up in my computer.
My Western Digital External 160 HDD stopped working. I tore it apart and hooked it up to my computer and the drive still works!!! It must have been the USB board that quit working. My drive uses an IDE ribbon cable. So if any of you have a problem with your External HDD it is worth taking it apart and hooking it to your motherboard. This video is good but I did not use this as a reference. I just wanted to see if other people had done this or had the same problem.
well what do you mean by just the blue cable? the one that came wit the drive is attached to the circuitry that converts the SATA signal into USB protocol, so if you use that its still guna bre slow... look around a few computer stores theyll be able to give you a cheap and short one for a few buck thatll look basically the same as the one i have here, once you get that, plug it into your HDD then the other end into your Motherboard, then the SATA power connector from your power supply to the HD
also if you dont have a SATA power connector coming off your power supply you can buy adaptors for that too that turn a molex connector into an SATA style
Well i was tryin to use the sata cable from my previous computer which is about 4 years old and the cable is blue instead of red i can hear the drive running but its not showing up at all not even in set up mode
hey! im not sure the speed of it internally but im sure if you do a little searching online you can find the speed of an average HDD on an SATA port, which i think is up in the hunderds of MB range...so yes, its WAYY faster
if u get a new computer but u want to all ur old files can u just take the HDD out of the older 1 and install it to the new computer????

@cragoo4 does it say the drive is formatted or the space is allocated?

@masonb the drive might need to be reformatted, or its not recognized as a windows compatible device...which i sadly cant help ya with
codemsan 1 year ago
@codemsan Ya I finally got it working, but I will have to reformat it. I am going to buy a usb case for it today to see if that will help me.
masonb 1 year ago
@masonb oh okay thats cool, im glad you got something out of it...these external drives usually suck, but the acually HDD inside works pretty well
