  • you are AWESOME, Mike Michalkow!!

  • The style for brushing is different from that of mallets and sticks, so holding them right and applying proper rhythms is best. Unlike how this fellow does it, keep your left brush far more quiet when doing the ride note with the right.

  • that sounded like u were sweeping the floor

  • the steve gadd is bent so you dont snag the brush on a coated head

  • So are you supposed to use the gadd brushes with the angled part facing down or up?

  • Whats the "let of 2" that he keeps talking about on the timing? is it like a double tap instead of one?

  • in jazz you count in triplets, so count one-trip-let, two-trip-let...and so on

  • no, 'let is from tripLET. so when you count 1 triplet, 2 triplet, 3 triplet, 4 triplet (when you count in jazz), the let of 2 is LET on the 2nd count. so 1 triplet, 2 tripLET.

I hope that made sense. If you accent the let of 2 it sounds awesome.

  • can i use the rods to play what this guy was playing. I have the plastic ones. it's called vater whip.

  • nope only brushes, you use rods the same way as sticks

  • oh ok.thanks. i just got brushes for the first time. I played it for the very first time with the band without even practicing and it sounded pretty nice hahah!

  • Awesome tutorial!

  • i like the dreadlocks

  • And I would write it again

  • the material in this is very basic and obvious for anyone who knows anything about drumming or about swing, and should come intuitively anyway. dont waste your 6 minutes

  • Guys - can I please advise you not to take any of this in. This is NOT what brush playing is about. Watch the Charli Persip/ Billy Hart clips - listen to guys like Elvin Jones/ Ed Thigpen... if you want to practice your breaststroke go to the local swimming pool. Mike Michalwichalwichalwichalwitz is a charlatan of the highest order.

  • That was helpful advice, especially the clock tip. Thanks Mike!

  • Great video lesson! Wish I had somewhere to make nice videos like this.

  • NO!!!!!!!!

  • great

  • Really well delivered.... editor should have dropped an aerial view in on the pointing our the 'clock' or pulse zones on the snare....

Metronome a few db to loud...

but the best bit.... The way you say "Jazz ride pattern' .... priceless... ;-)

That's what makes Jazz Greeeeeaaaaat ....Niiiiiiiiice...

Brilliant work, thank you 5 stars. xxxxx

  • Another thing to mention is that retractable brushes have the metal triangle with which you can get some cool sounds from your cymbals.

The way I use brushes is just listen to the melody and let your ears tell your hands how to move. This is why there's little material on brushes. It's so personal it's different for everyone.

Nice vid, but I think that the metronome is a bit too loud. Makes it hard to hear the swishes.

Cheers, giving you a couple of stars (5) ;)

  • thats really helpful!

  • This is an Absolute Maple drum set.

  • Freedrumlessons is just damn great. I can't believe that there are people willing to help for nearly no cash. Salute!

  • Thanks!

  • thanks a lot... all I have to do is practise :)

  • yep.

  • @Szajdi and learn how to spell

  • @kidboxful It's spelled "practise" in Europe.

  • @kidboxful poor attempt for a clever comment.
