I thought the joke was funny because it has such a surprising WTF ending. Jake should have said that because that is why he laughed at it. Instead, he kissed up and expressed agreement that the joke wasn't funny because he was on his first day of an insane job and being tested and because he was paranoid further from being on weed and PCP.

I think its more along the lines of you can't underestimate anyone especially when its related to street life. People who you think are weak or who you can disregard can come back and actually be the one to get you. Some people who think they have all the power can be very dismissive to those who they perceive as weak. Its a cat and mouse game. Its a endless cycle, especially on the streets. Basically this is what happened to Alfonso at the end.

My take: the man in the joke represents the people in power. Snails (lower class) try to make their way closer to how comfortably people (the uppoer class) live. The snail inches closer to how humanity lives, but when the snails get close enough, the humans throw them to the back of the garden (incarceration) so they have to start all over again.

I would call this a riddle, instead of a joke. Seems like the answer is not what it's made out to be. There is no one answer to it. Most of our assumptions pertaining to topic are equally relevant. Similar to a word of vocabulary with an expanded variety of definitions.

Hoyt, who's new and a slow learner, (perceived by Alonzo) then, shows his heart (saving the guy's cousin) and makes his way back to Alonzo's place, for payback. So I think it can also mean, never underestimate the heart of the weaker guy, & If u want something done, do it yourself. I know people will disagree, but, it's just a thought. I think it's another piece of the puzzle that the movie scatters. It can have many different definitions & i've read quite a few. One i've came up with that I haven't seen is this. The man could've easily stepped on the snail and killed it, but he threw it...meaning, he let someone else do his dirty work. (Alonzo pays the mexicans to kill Hoyt) Because he underestimated the heart of the snail. Hoyt, who's new,and a slow learner.

Alonzo grew tired of Jake uncorruptble nature, he tried so hard to get Jake to become corrupt because he knew Jake wanted to make Detective. After Roger was robbed and murdered and Jake still did not heed to Alonzo's plan, he knew he had to get rid of Jake. If you listen closely when Alonzo is in the car, 'he said make sure that bath tub is clean hommie' as Smiley was on the other end of the phone. Alonzo got TOO cocky and gambled that a green horn would crack under pressure.

I thought the joke was funny because it has such a surprising WTF ending. Jake should have said that because that is why he laughed at it. Instead, he kissed up and expressed agreement that the joke wasn't funny because he was on his first day of an insane job and being tested and because he was paranoid further from being on weed and PCP.

I think its more along the lines of you can't underestimate anyone especially when its related to street life. People who you think are weak or who you can disregard can come back and actually be the one to get you. Some people who think they have all the power can be very dismissive to those who they perceive as weak. Its a cat and mouse game. Its a endless cycle, especially on the streets. My take: the man in the joke represents the people in power. Snails (lower class) try to make their way closer to how comfortably people (the uppoer class) live. The snail inches closer to how humanity lives, but when the snails get close enough, the humans throw them to the back of the garden (incarceration) so they have to start all over again.
