In 1967, Dr Williams came to Chamberlain High in Tampa as a clinician and then as a guest conductor. He spent a great amountof time with our drummers on this one. He told them to play the drum break like they were college frat guys on a Saturday night drunk. When they did...He said..THAT"S THE WAY I WROTE IT! I have a minature score of this piece- signed. and A thermofax of Border Festive. We were the second band to play that one in public performance and read it from the manuscript.
I agree, Brett! Although a great group of young musicians here, the conductor did not do them justice. MANY years have passed since my Dad (Clifton Williams) conducted my H.S., but as I recall, he never rushed leading into the piccolo solo like that.
