  • Would be more convincing if done with the same dog..

  • Oh, cool. Situations 1, 2, and 2.

  • whenever my dog growls, i usually take it as "back off" i didn't know it was more than that at times...

  • makes sense, I mean, they're social animals and need to comunicate somehow. It's the same reason humans evolved spoken and writen language: to comunicate ideas. Their language might not be as complex as ours but it's a language none-the-less.

  • the last dog was a pussy. mystery explained.

  • My analysis:

The first dog was smart and knew it was a recording.

The second dog really didn't give a fuck.

and the third dog was jumpy.

  • @wolfoflegend1 haha made me day, now i'ma go jerk off

  • @wolfoflegend1 Yeah the third dog was jumpy, you could tell by his approach that he was skeptical and alert, any noise would have made him jump

  • that was stupid. you should have shown the tree dogs with the three dif growls. so we can see each reaction. only one dog jumped back. this was not a proper experiment shown to me.

  • @stepcrys becuz first growl said lets play ! if u jump back if i say lets play , u gotta be dumb !! dumb ppl should be banned from youtube ! :)

  • Not only do they have different growls but different barks! My dog definitely barks and growls differently according to situation.

  • i can tell the difference between my dogs' play growl and their everything-else growl. interesting to know their everything-else growls are different too!

  • It looked more like it jumped at the sudden noise more than the growl itself on the third dog. I also would like to point out that they showed a different dog on each instance, and while each dog had reactions to the different noises, they're still different dogs and that last dog could have been spooked liked that from all of the growling noises for all we know.

  • omg, I knew this from when I was 5...

  • hahahha my dog is tilting his head awwww

  • I love how this is like new news to some people...I knew this when I was five, i used to growl at my dogs when I was mad at them for nipping and learned real quick that different growls mean different things. Its the same as your mother yelling at you, you know she means it when she pulls out the "mom tone"

  • wait, how does that experiment prove that dogs read growls according to contextual signals? the situational context was exactly the same the only difference was the growl?

  • Keep pressing 7 to see funky disco dog...

  • the editor can not count.

  • This would be great if they used the same dog for each growl...it is possible that the dog they picked for the mean growl is a punk that runs at the sound of any dog...or maybe it was shocked to hear that sound so close without a dog near! I would rather see a better test.

  • This would be great if they used the same dog with each growl>>>how do we know the dog isn't a punk and runs at the sound of any dog?

  • if this was the hey lets play grow i wonder what should be the lets play meow

  • THATS WHY MY DOG SHILOH KEEPS GROWLING AT ME. She just wants to play.

  • @spyfreakm16 nope, she hates you..... jk

  • just read in the right order! youtube doesnt allow long comments

  • For the animal shall not be measured by man. In a world older and more complex than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear. They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendor and travail of the earth."

  • We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals... We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far beneath ourselves. And therein we err, we greatly err.

    -Henry Beston

  • ok, i'm wondering. when they did the "step away from my bone" growl, the tester dog didn't look challenged, she looked curious. number one because her ears were erected forward, and number two because she was pointing

  • I figured this out when i was young, 2 dogs growling at me who didn't like men cos they were abused and I petted them and nothing happened!

  • @HateFenians you took a risk its not advisable to stroke a growling dog, a growl is a warning in the case you mentioned it was just a bluff but its like playing russian roulette

  • It wasn't a bluff, I'm experienced when it comes to dogs due to being brought up with them, they were abused by male owners before coming to the animal sanctuary and were not nasty just scared. I have got nasty reactions from dogs that were never abused when I was out n about when I went to pet them, but these dogs got by my actions that I wasn't a threat and I was friendly so they let me pet them.

  • @HateFenians its important not to feel sorry for dogs that have been abused they cant rationalise and will take it as weakness, its always a risk when youre not sure how the dog will react when you stroke the best advise is to always be calm

  • I was calm, I have more sympathy for growling dogs that were abused than the normal growling dog who is a grumpy bastard.

  • You notice that with each different growl there is a different dog?... something tells me this is just a BS study wasteing our money. but what do I know?

  • of course they do! it's they're own language! it would be like us knowing the difference between someone saying ' back the f up' and 'that's my food' in our native language. dogs language is just like us trying to understand those same things said in another language. another chunk of money wasted on an obvious study.

  • i mess with my dog and growl and he knows exactly what it is the playfull type then when im kidding around i put food down and try a food kind of growl its the feeling you put with a growl counts and my dog backed off :P my dogs a stafature bull terrior

  • A growl is just for fun it doesn't mean anything, when people talk its just for fun it doesn't mean anything :S

  • @Kruizlinx LOL -- exactly whut i wus thinking --

Its ridiculous they wud actually think they growl just to ''make noise '' Lmao

  • I could always tell what my dog was saying by the difference in his barks and growls.

  • Comment removed

  • I have 5 dogs, and holy shit is it obvious.

Seriously, even I can tell the difference.

God damn, this isn't anything new, I've known it since I was like 10!

  • @SirSexyAlot Yeah, you're right. This is old news. I've known this for years myself. I could always tell what my dog was saying by the difference in his growls and barks

  • i love my dog(: lol

  • @sillybabie326 i love my dog too :D

  • thats cool !!

  • @peachyosucky99 Just auful

  • I think this is great because so many people are quick to slap a shock collar on a growling dog when the reality is that dogs growl for many different reasons and not all of them are aggressive! I say let dogs be dogs already!

  • HA...That dog at 1:00 as like...WTF??? lol

  • It sounds to me its not a langugage but a sound wave the communicate on like wagging of a dog and cats tail, they both mean different things like a dog wagging its tail can be aggressive if its high or happy when its in the middle wagging, a cat means it getting annoyed. Theres no langugae but theres a soundwave a growl hits that indicates a different meaning like when you yell "I LOVE KIDS!" in a happy loud tone its different from when you wisper "I.. love.. kids.." it makes you sound creepy

  • i wonder if dogs understand dogs from other regions

Like a Chinese dog barking at a British dog? Or is there a universal dog language?

  • @UltraEpicLoser I don't think so, my cousins dog was in the park where there was some chinese tourists. They played but after 5 minutes or random barking, growling and sniffing eachother. My cousins dog is usually much quicker to identify dogs that do and don't want to play.

Meh, maybe it was just the other dog being confused at the fact it was in another country.

  • i always knew that animals could talk to eachother with their own langauge, all barking growling whining meowing hissing ect. is just a langauge or langauges, that we so far have failed to understand so that we may understand and posibly speak it/them, btw u just wasted a crap load of money on this, it was obvius they had different growls, when they play they growl but its just an intimidation growl, when theyre angry or suspicious they growl as a warning

  • it's funny what loser & lower class the human belongs to ;p tough we think were good..

     its really funny (=

  • SO CUTE!!!!

  • religoin is a big part of how we discredit them. Christianity states that animals dont have souls lol! as if an animal were just an inanimate object. Humans and animals are classified the same people. Mamals.

  • i have four pitbulls for about two years now! and if took a fucking reseasrch department than there fuckin idiots foreal lol there barks are also different what are they gonna spen ten grand to figure that out?

  • I think these studies must be done by people who have never been around animals. I know what my dogs' growls and barks mean, so it stands to reason other dogs know even better than me.

  • every commercial i see is zapping the precious life out of me

  • Why didn't they use the same dog three times? That takes down the credibility a little.

  • This ^

  • not really if you use the same dog then it might just get wise about the speaker and ruin the whole thing

  • This is a youtube video. They show us the interesting parts. We're not witnessing the whole scientific study.

I'm sure they had several dogs, and went through the process with each.

  • I guess that's true.

  • I would assume they did, it was an experiment. What they showed on the video was a short clip, they would have done them many times with each dog.

  • they mentioned the amount of dogs used in the study. or do you just watch videos for the pretty pictures?

  • apparently so. ^_~

  • Nah, I think it was just the dogs personality. The first dog was just eating his food without stepping back like what was expected. The second dog was the same, even though he was supposed to step back when the growl was heard. The third dog seemed scared right off the bat, and when he heard a noise, he instantly backed off. It was all just personality.

  • @Macr888 - I think you are right. the last dog hesitated from the beginning - so he might felted that he needed to back off whenever a scary sound or a strange thing will happened.

  • I never realy thought about it, but I have always been able to tell why my dogs are growling.

  • Baaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!! Congratulations on Discovering America Captain Obvious!!!!!!!!

Christ! This is just plain ridiculous! OF COURSE THEY HAVE A LANGUAJE YOU DORK, ALL SENTIENTS ANIMALS HAVE!

My cat's meows sounds alike, but I can tell when he's happy to see me, hungry, or just wanna play...

  • Ha, this is true. Humans discredit animals so much.

This is because we don't understand animals. As a result, we often treat them quite badly.

The truth is that animals have a complicated system unknown to us. They are highly sophisticated and evolved, and deserve much more respect than we give them.

  • yesss!! 100% agree!

  • @gueneveve

you do realise humans are animals too?

  • @hassiand Yeah, totally. I labeled them differently, purely for semantic reasons. Why do you ask?

  • @gueneveve

sorry i voted you down, this new damn video page look screwed me over. meant to give a thumbs up, and i agree

  • @kasakagegaara No worries! I think it confuses everyone.

  • @gueneveve My neighbour has two new puppies who growl at me everytime i walk past there house, it's only when I turn around they either run away then come back like they are playing, or get playful and attempt to lick my hands. Ofcourse I fear the growl of dogs but I would rather stand and wait for the dog to make there move, rather than think it's agressive.

Infact I walked into there house the other day and they pinned me down growling then tried to lick me to death. harsh way to go (xD cute)

  • @Kernow31426955 Growling is just like saying "Hey, You go away this is my territory" or maybe also something friendly "Cmon, Lets play. Toss it, Toss it, Toss it, toss it"

  • @gueneveve Yup. You are right i beleive some of them are highly evolved even to surpass us humans are weak thats why they have to rely on something else and what happens when electricity or i dunno there's no weapons? chaos. only chaos and animals dont rely on anything but themselves and they're bodies thats whats awesome

  • @gueneveve we're quite sophisticated as well, and we're animals. they dont understand our sophisticated complicated systems, however we try to make them understand by teaching them tricks and the other way around from how they cuddle with you.

  • @gueneveve man your right i hate it when ppl kick dogs and spit on them. i treat them well and i think everyone else should because they are living creatures and do have feelings.

  • @gueneveve

We will never treat animal's as well as ourselves. We, as primates, are natrually xenophobic to anyone outside our group. And that group can be anything- a sect, tribe, community, religion, even species.

  • @majoraswrath132 i think i treat dogs better than humans does that make me a freak?

  • @jayohaychNKim no, dogs are better than most humans.

  • @jayohaychNKim

No, that makes you a furfag.

  • @gueneveve fuck the human race.

  • @chiaromontestephen

    AMEN to THAT Brother!!!

  • i knew this years ago they have different growls.

i wonder how much government money was wasted on this lol

  • @garycalgary Yea, I knew this a long while ago as well. Dogs are very expressive and have various ways of communicating. Now, as far as the government, they probably created a Dog Growls Discovery fund and expecting taxpayers to pick up the slack. *lol*

  • @garycalgary The government is great at wasting taxpayers money.

  • @garycalgary doesn't matter, the gov is already broke, whats a couple more million?

  • @garycalgary

probably millions that could have been spent bettering the econmony hah.

  • @Ganondorf42 first order of business: find out who paid for the study.

  • @MST2k yes!

  • @garycalgary

    *economy.

): didnt mean to do that. hah.

  • @garycalgary lol what happened was they probably took a tape recorder and diffrent dogs and told the national reserve they need 1 million dollars

  • @garycalgary just because you knew, doesn't mean EVERYONE else knows!

  • @SoullessTemptation It's kind of obvious though...

  • @garycalgary well...they were paranoid about the dogs making fun of them.

  • @GirlSlutty7882 1000 dollars and a slushie

  • thats pretty cool that dogs do that

  • Can't distinguish their growls, but their body language always come through clean. When you try to take their food they freeze in a kinda odd position and growls. Growling at strangers they face them completely with their head up right and growls/barks. And so on.

  • scientests FTW

  • What?

  • gee, no fucking shit, you dumb-asses need a study to tell you this?

    FAIL on this video

  • Comment removed

  • makes me hungry

  • Might just be my dog, but I can tell all his different growls apart. He is most vicious when I try to take food away from him.

  • omg, who can't?

  • same, i got three different dogs and i know whats happenin downstairs when i hear them all goin wild...think humans must just get used to things they hear often and but visuals to it...

  • anybody know where to get a recording of the growls...I want to try this on my dog lol

  • You will get it on google

  • @will3330 me too lol

  • thats a pretty cool study :D so much to learn about animals, even after all these years

  • wow very interesting =D

  • its mean the dog are hungry!!!

  • this does not convince me.. they might have just picked the 3 that fits perfectly into their description from all the ones they had tested

  • Incredible discovery! Learnt something excellent today thanks to this!

  • wow thats amazing

  • I am sad... my boyfriend dumped me for another girl can anyone cheer me up?

  • get a pet.. it eases any sad emotions.. i read it on magazines that those who own pets are happier and less prone to negative emotions...because their pets accompany them.

  • @GirlloveYou382 uhm...yea sure i think ur a wonderful individual and ur boyfriend is a asshole jackass..who is secretly gay..and that "girlfriend he dumped u for is a shemale with penis...so ur boyfriend is a dickhead fagget which ur happy he left

  • Dawg´s ponderin futility of life ...

  • Wow and I thought everybody knew animals could communicate... this is poor for a "Discovery" if you'd even wanna call it that...

  • Animal could communicate is just a theory, but this is the first prove of it

  • Studies are so helpful to us!

  • paku putanginamo mo bitch paku putangna mo gagu ka paku kantutin mo sarili mo paku bitch tsupaero ka discovery network paku bitch putangina mo ulit paku

  • haha... ur moron !

  • aw, poor baby. he got scared..

  • ok stupid study. of course dogs will understand the growls because its their own language.

  • Every dog I have ever met has bitten me.

  • dogs hate radical people

  • I am not a radical; my callsign is in fact a derivative of the name of a vehicle. How I ended up with such a name, I do not know.

For the record, the reasons I am incompatible with large mammals is, well, shall we say I would not blend in in a crowd.

  • What are you, a cat?

  • No, not even close.

  • om nom nom

  • ...?

  • since you say every dog you met has bitten you i bet the dogs were like "om nom nom"

    XD

  • More like "RRR GRR *snarl* RRGHGR"...

  • Do you smell like meat?

If so, that might be the problem

  • I, like every animal, am technically meat, but no, I do not think I smell more like food than any other organism.

Indeed, the compound I most smell like is a blend of various ketones.

  • grrrrrrrrrr

  • LOL! this video is less than 24 hours old at the time of me posting this, and already we have internet fighters below.

  • Indeed. It brings tears to your eyes, doesn't it? :/ well, let them waste time arguing, let's not let that stop us from enjoying the videos, aye?

  • Amazing

  • Theyz so kute =D

  • cool!

  • i'd shit my pants too if a table started growling at me.

  • they should test the same dog...

  • awesome-o!

  • amazing

  • My dog makes a cure growl when we play, its not threating, she bites me but not in an agrresive way.

  • Wow this is really cool.

  • jeez I'd jump too!

  • 0:23 it says 1. 2. and 2.

  • my dog sneezes but like shes talking, and makes deep gentle growles i wonder what it means.

  • woof woof woof woof

  • WTF they are ignoring the barks. except the last one, because he is a pussy

  • Interesting...

  • interesting.

  • wat about barks

  • Well barks... are not growls

  • i know but,do barks have their own meaning?

  • I think dogs bark for attention or telling you to back off

  • I always thought they were communicating on a deeper level than people give them credit for... it's about time someone actually researched it and proved it.

  • Dogs are smarter than people are.

  • No they're not... :S
