  • Titan actually had a real winner with Titan II, perhaps the most reliable system ever made. It was when SRB's were added was its real downfall with Titan III and Titan IV.

  • @gsrocks71321 No, Titan rockets were used up until 1967 for the Gemini launches. However, since Project Apollo, they've only ever carried Payloads to orbit. The Titan series is now phased out (As of 2005). Most American payloads are sent up on either Delta or Atlas Family rockets. Right now Lockheed martin IS looking at plans to develop a capsule that can go up using a delta (Which has a high payload to orbit ratio). but thats a ways off still.

    there have only been 2 missions resulting in fatality in the history of american rocketry (the nation that exclusively used the titan). Challenger: 1986. and Columbia: 2002. both of these were space shuttle accidents.

    People may or may not have been killed on launch pads associated with titan rocket launches, but no MANNED titan rocket has EVER blown up. 2007 death? No there wasnt, not in manned rocket launches.

  • @DCaussie Well seeing as how we haven't used a titan as a launch vehicle since 1967 (End of Gemini) It's not hard to see why. Now granted, even then the Titan had an 80% success rate, it would do you well to keep in mind the last time a Titan rocket was used for Manned Space flight.

  • @danschaoticmind The Titan was used from 1955 to 1987. Get your facts right. My father worked on Titan launches in the 70's and 80's at Vandenberg AFB in California. I believe the video clip that begins at 1:00 is the explosion that he witnessed in April of 1986. That was a Titan 34D

  • @drhender71 Check yourself. I said it rather explicitly that they were not used for MANNED launch. I made no reference to when the Titan rocket family ended service. However, I feel you should check your own facts there. From the Air force Space and missile museum Cape Canaveral: Titan was a family of U.S. expendable rockets used between 1959 and 2005. You can also double check those references from the Air force Unclass archives.

  • Titan's a very dirty rocket because it uses toxic fuels, so when it blows up there's a major mess left behind.

  • Being first is a historical footnote only. Missiles and spaceflight was an evolving new technology for both USR and US. Each side had their own approach and both had failures.

  • Doesn't matter if the soviets showed the "good" and "bad" they were the first to send a sattelite, animal, and a human into space, they were the first to space walk, the only thing we ever beat them in was the moon.

  • Think of the sucess of the Atlas program when they got the glitiches ironed out, it ran for 50 years, sure, there were still failures but a high reliability, same for the delta and titan programs..

  • Titan I December 1959. Destruct charge relays vibrated closed and created the structure failure which allowed the whole missile to collapse into the exhaust duct.

  • I have no affiliation with VAFB, I have an old VHS tape titled

    Titan 34D-9 Accident Report - lots of solid motor films and views of the 8 second flight. Recently on NASA Spaceflight several poor images were posted of the damage. I'll try to retrieve them and download PM sent..

  • Ya I thought about that last night when I typed it. I worked 76 launches while working missle ops for the Air Force. I don't recall working the other 34D's, but I do remember the 1st T-4. I was at the same fallback as the 34D and that T-4 had so much reverb that my pany legs were shacking and my skin was shacking. Never felt that much coming off a rocket before. It was awesome. The 34D blow up was really surreal. After we realized what was going on we scambled for our gas mask and started evac.

  • The titan explosion 2nd from the end I was at. I was less then a mile away at the fallback area. Got showered with rocket fuel. Was a surreal event for sure.

  • On June 27, 1961 Atlas 27E was destroyed at launch from a coffin at VAFB due to combustion instability. September 9, 1961 an Atlas-Agena was destroyed on the pad due to a cutoff at liftoff. Not sure any on pad failures occurred in 1962.
