i have no choic but to side with most of you out there this info is not backed up by any concrete steel chart or nothing except the small details at the bottom of the screen
This chart isn't based on real world experience, only information and misinformation gleaned from the internet and possibly someone's interpretation based on the metals included in the various alloys - as if you can tell anything from that. So take it with a grain of salt - really.
Some of the data matches up with what most of us have experienced, most of it does not.
What?! ...154 cm is tougher then s30v because of its lower carbon....s30v (higher carbon = better edge retention but LESS TOUGHNESS)will shatter before 154 cm. And s30v is way harder to sharpen....where do you get your information from? It seems like your just making this stuff up.
Sandvik 12C27 is pretty known for durability / edge holding so 2/10 is surprising. Also stain resistance is said to be pretty good, not so equivalent to 2/10.
The most hostile comments appear to be from Benchmade fanboys, who are possibly in denial that there are better knife steels available. I like benchmade axis lock, but 154cm steel is a LOW VALUE steel. Meaning you do not get your $200 bucks worth, compared to a more advanced knife steel. I use S30 blade offerings and boy, do they hold edge; forever. I.E. - reeves, ZT etc. I wish benchmade would use it, not sure if there are patent issues. S30V with an AXIS lock and a good design would kick ass.
@JimzOnDroid You can't make a blanket statement like that. It's also dependent on proper heat treatment and other factors. 440C is one of the worst stainless steels in my experience, but there are some custom makers out there who can turn it into a great steel. That being said, I have a 145CM knife and it's good, but not great. I would put it as the "least" of stainless steels that are acceptable. Ironically, 12C27 holds a better edge...
Wait... at 1:09 the chart for strength says VG10 has a strength of 5/10 but at the end when you show all of the VG10 specs, it says that it has a 3/10 for strength.... so which is it??
400c was not developed for jet engine blades. maybe you are thinking of ats-34? anyways, jet engine blades are made from Nickel and cobalt based superalloys, using a powder metallurgy process called ultrasonic Gas Atomization, I mention it because its the same process used to make some boutique alloys that you compare eg Crucible S30V
@angryjapanesenigga Boutique alloy? What steel world do you visit the knife world from? S30v is no "boutique alloy" In the knife world (as it was made specifically for the knife world).
Seriouisly, what exierence with steel do you have. Sounds to me like you have very little in knives, but a lot in whatever field you are in. And you think the two relate.
Thanks, but what squares are you talking about, the only blue things are circles, so what are you talking about. To answer any question you may have, I made everything.
yea, its that, you made it all yourself? honestly its the best and easyest chart to understand, you should put the imagens online somewere, its really well made!
Really good for people new to this kind of thing. I bought my first knife 2 days ago. Its blade is made from CPM S30V. Knife reviews on YouTube played a huge part in my choice of steel. I cant wait until a new steel gets made that is better than all the steels currently available. It can only be good for the end user. No doubt its name will start with the letters CPM.
Wow! That's a great, easy to understand way to tell people about the steels. Awesome job! I agree with your ratings almost completely. Interesting how S60V drops points from S30V, then S90V goes back up in points. I can see why they discontinued production of S60V.
I also notice how CPMS30V is the clear all-around winner. My favorite!
Yea S30V is just about the best right now, I tend to think that is because it was made specifically for knives, where as all the others are not, so it was made to make the highest possible values in the categories.
But still, in my opinion, it is still many times worse in many categories than many non stainless. Maybe I am biased, maybe I am just a non stainless guy, but I tend to see in test results non stainless consistently out performing stainless.
I have the large usmc kabar. I love 1095 and D2. Ive found i like fixed blades much better than folders haha. I think my next knife will be a small usmc.
1095 in KaBars is actually 1095 CroVan (Sharon 0170-6) which is a great steel, Kabar prior to 2005 just called it 1095, since they have made the distinction, but it was always 1095CroVan not just plain 1095....
Have you thought about either the Becker Campanion or Utility Combat if you want something a bit larger, or the KaBar Camp Knife, if you like the large belly, KaBar Bull Dozier is another one that is nice, Ontario Rat 7, or the ZT Military Fixed Blade....
Of course some of those are pretty pricey, like the ZT, but others are cheaper, I suppose it depends on what you want to spend.
not a premium steel, but it should do OK, with a decent heat treatment, CRKT is not known for super great heat treats the way that Camillus was, but it is not known for bad heat treats either.
Yea not so great.
If havnt used 425M it is like between 420HC and 440A, or between AUS4 and 6.
L6 without a doubt (8670M is basically the same thing so that is fine to), but I also like 1085-1095, D2 is good where impact toughness is not required, A2 and 5160 are also great....
i just have one question...about stain resistance:
you gave one star to 420HC and 8 stars to 440C, but if im not wrong 420HC is commonly used for diving knives - because of its good corrosion/stain resistance? :)
Actually, the more I think about it I was correct, 420HC is not very common in Dive knives, you may be thinking of either 420J2, or 440A, both are used in dive knives, even sometimes 300 series steel....
Sorry if I confused you, I commented earlier that it might be a mistake in my list, but I dont think it was now.
Awesome, Man... was looking forward to this one since you first mentioned you were working on this. An excellent reference piece. Definitely helped to put a lot into perspective.

good info, is vg 1 better or worse than vg10?
jhynesyahoo 2 months ago
Of course heat treatment is a very important factor ...and in no way is every 154 cm the same. But this video is totaly out of the ball park.

People swear by 12C27 for it's superb edge retention and yet it's kind of dissed here. What's up with that? Ronnie Rocker has two good points.
Where do you get this stuff?

Is 154CM really that hard to sharpen? I haven't had to re-profile my BM grips but i usually see them compared to VG-10 in terms of ease to sharpen.
TheYellowYak 2 years ago
Everything is relative in these comarisons, relative to the other steels in the video.
But yea, 154CM is pretty hard to sharpen. Again, it is all relative to the other steels in the video, not on its own.
Its like the olympics. You cant get 2nd and a half place. There is just 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
