  • off to a wedding today, thanks to you I look rather sharp :)

  • Well, I'm 31, wear ties every day, and that's the first time I've seen someone show me how to do a Windsor knot. Thanks!

  • Thank you very much, I had a presentation for college today and I needed to wear a tie and did not know how to tie one. Now I do =)

  • I think this will come in handy. I have noticed a lot of poorly tied ties. You should rename the video to something like "tie a Windsor knot" so that a guy could look it up in a pinch.

  • valuable lesson!

  • That was interesting. Thank goodness I don 't need to tie one of those on my bros. or sons anymore! That was sure a nice dk blue shirt you had on in your previous vid. Mary

  • thanks soooo much for this!

  • I'm an American lady, and I found your demonstration of tying the Windsor knot quite fascinating! Thanks for posting it.

  • Thank You for this video, very interesting. I always go with solid colors as far as ties go...sometimes I'll go with two tone, or even three tone if it matches the suit or outfit I'm wearing.

  • a big kiss for you dear!!!

  • wow I never knew that! :)

  • I learned to tie knots from the knot classification list of Fink and Mao (The 85 Ways to Tie a Tie). I learned the Windsor as

Li Co Ri Lo Ci Ro Li Co T

which is by #31by their classification.

    Your knot appears to be

Li Co Li Ro Li Co T

#10 by their classification, which does not have a name listed! I thought it was a half-Windsor at first, but it's different (although it has the same number of steps).

This is on Thomas Fink's web page. I can send a link if you're interested.

  • I was something like twenty-six years old when my father showed me the Windsor and thae half Windsor. I just remembered the easy one as I need to wear a tie for work...

  • Hi Peter,

Contrary to what you think, alot of men DON'T know how to tie a tie, and as for a Windsor knot - now quite rare. :smiles: Dr Blockbuster, a tie man, prefers a Half-Windsor but that's just a personal preference.

Another great video from you - have you ever thought of being a teacher?

    V

  • i did not know how to tie a windsor knot so thank you

  • i now know how to tie a tie.

  • I actually tie my tie differently, but it still turns out the same as in the video.

  • Although I'm a lady, I've still always wondered how to tie a necktie... it always looked like some form or origami to me! :D

    Nice video!

  • Thank you very much Sir = )

Trying to tie my tie almost drove me to despair in the past

    Greetings from germany : )

  • dude i would have to disagree i have never had to tie a tie. but i have had to wear suits.

  • Another great video with different content! Good variety, I really look forward to your next video! :)

  • I think I do mine slightly different... yet I thought my way was a windsor... whoops! Well... it's done my fine so far, I think I'll just stick with it :D

  • hi peter, iam a serving soldier. love watching you on your vids. just keep it up mate...

  • I can never get the windsor right on the first try. I usually leave the ties "tied" once I get them right and just slip them on and off my head. You can hang the "pre-tied" tie on a coat hanger and it's ready whenever you need it. I learned this trick from my uncle who is handicapped and only has the use of one arm.

  • Peter, I hate seeing cruel comments against you. These people are sad in the extreme, mentaly ill, or incredibly lonely and cannot even gain friendships on the internet so they respond to people by saying cruel and hurtful things. Please ignore them, and, as someone else pointed out, if you mark their comments as spam, there account will be suspended.

    Take Care,

    neil73

  • I never could do this just right. Thank you very much.

  • Nice! Thanks, I needed that!

  • The Pizzagroup 5000, just what do you hope to achieve by being rude to the nicest man on youtube, if you don't like his video's go and watch something else

  • The best thing you can do with THEPIZZAGROUP5000, THEROASTCHICKEN, MTGROUP (all the same, pathetic person), is NOT to comment on his posts.

Just mark them as 'spam' and his accounts will soon be suspended.

  • Re: THEPIZZAGROUP5000 .

This is yet another example of someone who doesn't contribute or build anything, in this case, this narrow individual have any videos they upload of their own, or at all for that matter. But, they do puff up their own fragile ego by tearing down.

Re: How To Tie a Bow Tie:

I still love to see you still doing what you do my friend across the pond. I use the Windsor tie myself mate!

It's easy to be a jerk, it's hard to be good.

  • I didn't know how to tie a tie, but now I do!

  • it was called a double windsor when I was a lad ;) At school I preferred the standard knot for a couple of reasons, mostly because when you pulled the skinny end out you are left with a knot in the tie, that if you pull both ends disappears:D The double windsor was more difficult to untie and getting out of school uniform quickly was an important thing for me :D.

btw I dont think that may young folk would know how to tie a double windsor or even what it is ;)

  • That tie is such a lovely color! Thanks for all your videos

  • great video! I am saving this one so I can assist my love on special tie occations! thanks Peter!

  • old people are just as mysterious to us young people as young people are to you

  • Thank you sir, I never knew how to tie that one before. Also I love to hear you talk. I think it's because you actually know what your talking about. Not always the case on YouTube. Great video 5 stars.

  • You are always immaculately turned out Grandad.

  • When I still wore ties, I always liked the look of a windsor knot with an extreme spread collar. Unfortunately, I found such collars difficult to find and then very expensive.

Today, I just go without a tie, even when I wear french-cuffs. Of course... that is a big no-no to the sartorially minded.

    Thanks for the video!

  • Thank you for this video! These days, unfortunately, quiet alot of men and boys use the "clip-on" type ties. They may be more comfortable, but there is nothing more sexier than a man tying a real tie.

  • Thank you for the video. I don't wear a tie very often but when I did my dad used to tie the knot for me. He's been gone (passed away) for a number of years now but I've never learned to tie a Windsor knot. Now I can save your video and do it myself if the occasion arises. Thanks again.

  • I can't tie my tie without looking in a mirror... huh.

  • Thanks!

  • Hmm... Turns out the only tie I can tie is a Windsor knot :) Would you mind showing some other types? I didn't know you can do it differently.

  • you struggling for video ideas that much?

  • I learned to tie a tie years ago from someone who informed me it was the Windsor knot only to find out several years later I'd actually learned to tie a Four-in-Hand know lol

  • I worked at sears, you'd be surprised how many people actually don't know how to tie one.

  • I know 9 different ways to tie a tie. I like tying a different knot in my tie everyday I go to work. Besides, the ladies love a guy who changes positions. If you know what I mean.

  • Im glad that you did this because I kept getting them confused.

    Now i know.

  • hehe. I learned how to tie a tie in high school... when I was the clown in the play "Goodbye to the Clown." Used a Windsor knot for that. It's surprising, though, how many people these days don't know how to tie one, so I can see this video being useful to some. A lot of people go with clip-on ties now.

  • wow! i never knew about a windsor knot but look at me learnin something new! I love you, your an awesome teacher!

  • I must admit, I'm very much anti-tie.

  • It's a shame to see how few people know how to tie a Windsor knot. I was taught at a very young age. But it's good to see you putting this info out there.

  • Gread video, i didn't know how to tie a tie. But now i do:-D

  • nice

  • I am not going to lie but I have always been clueless on how to tie a tie. Though I have only worn a suit maybe 4-5 times in my life..

  • I thought this was useful! I kind of wish more guys dressed smartly with ties etc. Knowing how to dress smartly is very attractive, and more men should pay attention to Peter and stop having a go. However, with comments like that nasty one down there, I can only assume the person thinks a suit with trainers is cool. Or that Shellsuits are still in vogue (with dress shoes, naturally). Good video Peter, thanks :)

  • is there a half windsor and a full windsor or am i confusing this with a nelson hold?

  • Yay, really handy in case I forgot how to again -_- :P

  • now i know how lol

  • A dying skill!

  • A fine knot!

  • Gee, why don't you tell him how you feel. Great sense of humor... and keen wit...

  • Hi pal

  • wow you're mad

  • haha I don't know how to tie a tie, although that I am perhaps proud of. Thanks for the info Peter!

  • Thank you, Peter!

More fashion in your videos, please :)

  • Your the sweetest Peter!

Your like everyones virtual grandfather : )

  • Ok, that one I knew, but tying a bow tie, nope.

  • Peter,

Thank you for being you. Please keep posting videos.

    <3

  • You'd be surprised to see how many people don't know how to tie a tie let alone a Windsor knot, teehee! Thanks for the video Peter :)

  • Haha! I haven't tied a Windsor for years. The transition from engineering and management to hanging out in Florida has eliminated the need for wearing ties, and I love it. However, watching you, I'm sure that given a couple of dry runs, I'd remember. It's one of those things you learned as a kid and just don't forget.

  • I hate ties... like a noose around a neck.

  • i think you are fantastic. i love watching your videos. just thought i'd say hi and let you know i enjoy your videos!

  • I use a half-Windsor...less wrapping and such. This is a nice example of why we enjoy you as much as we do, Peter.

  • I used to know how to tie a tie... tie a tie... Strange. Yes I used to know but that was back in middle school back when they were compulsory.

Last time I had to wear a tie my then father in law had to tie it for me.

I think its time I practice, although these days I really don't have the looks for a tie. Maybe one day people will see.

    Thanks for the vid :)

  • I'm ashamed to say that I'm 23 years old and don't know how to tie a tie. I usually have to get a mate to do it, and it's embarrassing beyond belief. I'm going to get one out and practice when I get home, using this video as my tutorial.

And Peter, it didn't come off as patronising at all. This is probably one of the best videos you could post. You're helping a young man like me out. So thank you!

  • You took me back to my first day at the Larkman infant school. As plimsolls were required in the school hall, we were given an intense couse in tying laces. That relieved the teacher of having to tie 35 pairs of laces twice. She then had to only tie the laces of the 6 or 7 kids who didn't get it. Since then the advent of elasticated shoes and velcro has made that redundant. As a result you now see many teenagers with their laces undone because they don't know how to tie them.

  • I shall have to view this video several more times. I have been tying my neckties in a Half-Windsor knot for over 30 years, so learning a new way will take some time!

  • you are one of the collest old guys ever, but are you still alive? you have not made a new video in 2 years

  • If you are really only 15 you may not realize that what you've said is really rude (not to mention ignorant and stupid!). If you're trying to be rude I've got no time for you whatsoever, however I will give you the benefit of doubt. Please THINK before you comment, and prevent making a goose of yourself in future!

  • next time click the SEE ALL button, he makes lots of vids.

  • um.... for some reason the videos are now shown starting at the beginning, 2 years ago.

if that's what made you think he's been away, click 'SEE ALL'

  • Never used a winsor knot on my tie before,or knew how, but I'm going to use it in future, Thank's.

  • I'm 26 years old and I still struggle to tie a tie. My parents divorced when I was young and I've never had a man influence in my life to show me how to tie one properly. Very practical upload; I'll practice tonight! Thanks and all the best from Georgia!

  • Thankyou, I am 31yrs old and still can't tie my own tie.Wow,the silly things we take for granted.

  • I don't wear ties anymore because they are too embarrassing... look where they point!!

Bless you my dear dear friend for the instructions! I never learned a Windsor knot (that soujnds like the speed of the queen's boat!) but I did something similar.

If I have to wear a bow tie to my son's wedding this summer, I will have to 'call in, sick!!'

  • I'll use this technique next time i need to tie my tie :p. I didn't know so you sure taught me something!

Thanks in advance and warm greetings from belgium.

  • thanks for the tutorial, but u went super fast haha

  • Thanks for the video! Now I can show my friend because he has NO clue! Thanks again!

  • I never learned how to do that. I hope I never have to wear a tie.

  • I am embarrassed to say that I could NEVER learn to tie my sons' ties. Thank goodness my husband was there to do that. I am all thumbs.

  • You always look very dressy! How about some stories about what was expected from a real gentleman back at the time?! What was courteous?

BTW: That's the simple windsor knot I suppose. The full windsor takes one step more, right?

  • I didnt know the Windsor knot. Ties are actually quite interesting, even though I am not a tie-kind-of-person. I never get to wear them, I dont really have the "urge" to wear them and I dont like too much formalities.

  • Thank You, Peter.

  • Very nice! No I didn't know how to tie a windsor knot, and didn't know there were different knots or that that is its name! You did a nice job! Looks fabulous! In today's impovrished society, we do need to be taught things, again... arts which have been sadly forgotten.

  • I really don't know how to tie a bow tie...... can you do that?

  • we used to call that a double winsor

  • You've made a sizable contribution to civilization today!

  • Thanks for that - I can't really tie a tie, it always ends up really messy, but now I know where I was going wrong.

  • I prefer the double Windsor knot. Just my preference.

  • I'm 21, and when I'm forced to wear a tie, I still take it to my dad to do it for me. It's the last thing I've saved for him to teach me before I move off (although I don't live with my parents anymore, I'm only a half hour away.). I just can't force myself to ask him until the last possible day. Thank you Peter.

  • I've never worn a.... tie, is it? *pulls his sweats up*

    So this was quite helpful.

  • I don't wear ties full stop, although I do know how to tie a windsor knot, but it was still nice to watch the vid.xx

  • Thanks for posting this vid. It looks very cleaner and sharper than version I usually do. Keep up good work, my friend.

  • i can tie a windsor knot. It came in handy when my son needed to wear a tie and didn't know how to tie one yet. Since I can only tie it on myself, I put the tie on, tied the knot, carefully took it off without undoing it and put it around his neck. I guess all kinds of knowlege are useful.

  • haha i didn't know how to tie a windsor knot

    lol

    genious video

    ur a legend

  • Hi Peter :)

Can you please teach us other ways in which to tie a tie, I would love to learn some other methods please?

  • Thank you so much. I don't know how to tie it at all, this helped and will use it!

  • that's actually the only way i know to do it. i didn't even know there were more ways, haha. i always have to help my dad with his tie :D

  • at school i got lines for wearing my tie wrongly...i've hated the things ever since.

the older i get i'll probably need to wear them more often, with increasingly more weddings and funerals to look forward to.

  • Actually, I'm 54 and didn't know how to tie a windsor knot. My father wasn't in my life and I had no male relatives that lived close by. So I learned how to tie a tie from a cub scout handbook, lol. It was a much simpler knot and I never really liked how it looked. But since I seldom wore a tie, that is what I have been using all these years. I'm going to favorite this video so the next time I have an occasion to wear a tie, I can review it and use the windsor knot. Thanks.

  • Interesting video Peter.

I never knew that it was called a Windsor knot.

  • I enjoy wearing my jacker, shirt and tie.......

But don't get much call......so a marks and sparks jumper rules.

  • I haven't worn a tie for about 15 years.

  • ....

  • Peteer, I'm 68 now and I can still remember my Grandpa teaching me how to tie my shoes and also the proper amount of toilet paper one needed to use! Fond memories indeed!

  • ill try that for school tomorrow :P

  • I tied ties differently before, but the windsornknot looks a lot more even. So thanks a lot for teaching me =)

  • great video!I've always wanted to know how to make one properly :)

  • Ha, Very good. I remeber my father back in the '60's teaching me how to tie a tie.

When I started working in the early '70's, very wide ties were in fashion then, and if I tied a windsor knot, the result would be a Huge knot, and almost no length of tie left. So I did a 'half windsor' knot, which seemed to work much better. To this day I still do it that way. Also, being as how I'm left handed I do it in a mirror image to how right handed people do it. Same thing with tying bows, etc. :)

  • Awesome tie-tying.

  • I've never done a windsor knot before I usually just loop round twice and then straight throught the loop. Must say I'll be using your sugestion from now on though haha.

  • im 13 and i go to a school where i have to wear a tie, personally, i do a windor knot. my mates say that its stupid, but i think it looks professional lol

  • well done good sir. I love wearing suits and looking smart too :P

  • I never knew how to tie any sort of tie before, so thanks for the video! I'm a girl, so I don't need to wear ties, but at least I'll know if a guy doesn't :]

  • You're an amazing person! More people your age should share their thoughts, tips and experiences on here. Who says the youth aren't interested?

  • Amen. I thank God for people like Peter who share their wisdom with us. I'm 23 and don't have the slightest clue what I'm doing in this world. If it weren't for my elders, I'd be completely lost.

  • aw your such a lovely man :) x

  • Thanks for the great video!

  • technically a half windsor, generally assymetric so I personally preffeer the full or double windsor myself, I'm 6'3" and I don't have issues with length, generally have a bit of a short tail but it's never caused a problem. I spend most of my time dressing my friends who don't know how to tie them properly.

  • You may be surprised to find how few people know how - one doesn't need a tie with t-shirts!

  • Very good.

    Ill try it out

  • My Dad taught me the Windsor knot and I've used it ever since. Like P00P0STER0US states, it can definitely use a lot of a tie!

  • Thanks for the bit of info Peter

  • Great video on tieing tie's. Ive read some where on the net that different tie knots mean different things and what I read about the windsor knot is that it mean's confidence. So when useing the windsor tie the person is thort to be a confident person.

  • I use a half-windsor knot because the full windsor always seems to gobble up too much of my tie. But I learned to tie a tie from the internet. The site I used even has instructional videos now, showing what you see in the mirror. If you look for tie-a-tie you'll find it. My first comment didn't post because I tried to put the site name in here :o)

  • That looks very gentleman. Last year I was going to this fancy theater in Washington DC to watch a Shakespeare play for my high school latin class. Like usual I dressed very casual, actually a bit sloppy. And When I was trying to buy a bottle of water, the guy in the concession stand ignored me first and then treated me like some beggar, but then I saw him being so polite to this young gentleman about 30 years old who dressed up quite neat.

  • I must admit it took me ages as a youngster to tie a tie, i eventually worked it out. I also use a slight variation which gives a neater knot and found that certain tie materials are a lot easier to tie than others, i.e. those with smooth material.

Thanks Peter for reminding me how I should tie it, LOL.

  • Brilliant as ever Peter!

  • Love YOU, Peter!!

  • I cannot tie a tie never have ever done it. Your gonna have to teach me next time.

  • Short, fun stuff like this is exactly why I love to watch you, Peter :-).

  • Awesome!

  • nice vid!

  • Thanks Peter

  • I don't wear a tie.

    Maybe that's b/c I'm a woman.

    Hahaha!

    Love ya Peter,

    Moomay

  • well I for one do not like wearing a tie. I usually wear the oriental style shirts but I will have to try this knot sometime. Thank you for sharing...

  • Magic!

Never got round to learning how to tie a Windsor.

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for posting Peter
