As a "white boy" growin up in town the northeast, this dude was a major influence...went to all the rock concerts, but when I got saved (in '83), this is the stuff that came to mind!!! this guys talent is not of this world!!
I love this song. It came to mind just now and i'm so glad to have found it. The ministry of James Cleveland lives on. So what if he wasn't perfect, who is but Jesus? Thanks for the video lifthimhigh.
No matter what you say, there is something about this song and the music of James Cleveland that you just feel when he is ministering to you though his message.
@williamsivy I am so sorry to hear that you lost Harold. Can you tell me what hyears he played. I do remember the name but I would love to know what songs and times I can associate him with. I sung with Los Angeles Gospel Messengers but cannot remember him playing for us. He may have played at the church or on the road and in the workshop, so I want to get a picture of Harold in my head. Do he have anything on youtube?
@Sheall323 Hi thanks for replying. Check out 'I give my all' James Clevelan ' on you tube. Harold Iviry Williams can be googled on wikipedia. He was there in the late 70 early 80's I belive and wrote songs and performed on my cd GMWA projects as well as charles ford singers.
@williamsivy I was just listening to this song and came across yoru comment again and wondered how you were doing. Yes, I do remember Harold's contribution to music although I was from Michigan at that time but still a part of Gospel Music Workshop and loved Charles Fold Singers from their first albums with Rev. Cleveland.
@Sheall323 Thank you so much for the reply. I am looking for more work that Harold did especially the complete song 'I give my all'. I am glad t hear you remember him.
My brother brought a 4-track player from NY City to NJ where I'm from and we had so much fun listening to different gospel artists.... but he was so serious when it came to Reverend Cleveland. I now see why! He is powerful! But, does anyone remember knowing about 4-track players or having one? If so, let me send me a message and I will reply. God bless you, again, for this song being posted.
LiftHimHigh: Please know that this video touched me so near my heart... It was my brother's favorite piece by Rev. Cleveland. And even tho it's been a number of years since my brother's passing, I still hurt at listening to this song... It still brings me tears when I remember how much he loved this song and what it meant to him. Thank you for posting this even tho I have tears... I believe God for his presence in my life. God Bless you.
Such Beautiful Harmonies!! Ya'll hear this??..Say what you will...The lord gave James Cleveland music designed to reach and impact the people!! Such a blesessing to the body!
@chicagomarchingbands remember God will never leave you nor forsake you. God knows what you going through and just trust him to see you through it. yes,get into a church that is preaching the bible and get into the word. Bless you. Ima keep you in my prayers.
6:11 James Cleveland's brilliance is a lost art today. He knew to hold his tounge and let the Spirt minister. He looked like he wanted to say something but was told "just be still and let me work".
There is an anointing in this song that flows through every fiber of my being in this song. God's promise of never leaving nor forsaking me. That's the lifting for me; and I will stand on His word. Thank you God; for Your Lifting, for me!!! Hallelujah!!
when I'm feeling like there is no hope for me I come to youtube and listen to James Cleveland songs. these are the songs I grew up listening to and singing in the choir. there will be a lifting for me thru 2009. Thank you Jesus!
I noticed some people made note of how he often says shush, one person found it rather annoying. Having worked with musicians, choirs and orchestras from diferent backgrounds it is well known that black choirs really know how to sing strong and poerfull, but often have a difficulty singing quietly with dynamism. It is just that he made it so obvious; which is a part of our culture musically, in that the director sometimes is vocal in his directions. There is power in varying dynamics in a song
Yes, Kitchin07, you are exactly right. And in addition to your statement, "Shhhh..." is a trademark of Rev. Cleveland. I LOVE it... so much so, that even I use it in my performances when necessary. That's part of our culture, and ain't nothin' anybody can do about it! LOL. Shhhhhhhhhhh
Thanks for posting this it really encourage me because a could relate to everything he was singing about and all I could do is shead tears. I no one day it will get better for me.
Thank you so much for posting this...Our God is an awesome God!!! This posting blessed me today. While I go through that which I have to go through to get to my breakthrough this video encouraged me to no end. Though we sometimes fall our God is ALWAYS there to lift us up!!!!! Thank You Jesus
when the late Rev. James Cleveland passed so did gospel music as we know it. He was a pioneer and an awesome writer, minister, composer, director and preacher...His style and take on gospel music is sorely missed....
I loved The Late Rev. James Cleveland, He was a composer for God. He presented our choir, on our first album. Helen Stephens And The Voices Of Christ. The Southern California Community was our sister choir.
Love James Cleveland. He made simple melodies so deep. But, why is his later years he always said Shhhhh when the choir would sing. It gets a little annoying at times.
I have the homegoing service for him and Thomas on vhs..Man I miss them-real talk..The true masters are all gone..Rev.Cleveland, Rev.Charles Nicks,Thomas Whitfield,Mattie Clark and Donald Vails to name a few..
blkchi1- I wish you could post the homegoing of these greats on You tube. I grew up on all of them. My grandmother knew Rev. Cleveland, Rev. Nicks, Rev. Franklin Mattie Clark, and Mahalia Jackson. They all had good times at our house, and al Prophet Jones's home. I hope you could do this.
BlkChi, where did you get the services of Rev. James and Min. Whitfield? That's a collector's item to have either service, even that of the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. I just found out that Dr. Clark's burial site is not even marked.
I just realized this was Rev. Cleveland's last live recording. My sources show this was recorded June 4, 1990. He died 8 months later in Feburary 1991 and the album was released in August 1991. This video is truly historic. His health was already deteriorated at the time and his voice was weak, but he still got up there, testified, and sang!
I was one of the singers in the choir and today the song is a great comfort for me. I lost my brother, John, 9/27/07. My sister, Velma, had a heart attack 10/20/07 and still in the hospital, but "I Will Say, I Will Say, There is Lifting for Me."
I'm praying for you sis. Only God can, let Him, and through it all continue to praise Him, because there is a lifting, for us to continue experiencing blessing Jesus has for us: joy, peace and love. Peace!
@LiftingHimUp Savoy/Malaaco in Jackson, Mississippi has this album in their catalogue. The whole album is a beautiful and last work with the Los Angeles Gospel Messengers that Rev. Cleveland did, although he did "What Shall I Do" with Southern California Community Choir. We were blessed that "What Shall I Do" was orignally Los Angeles Gospel Messengers but was done on Lady Tremaine Hawkins' record and Southern California Community Choir's last album with King of Gospel.
one of my favorites, very very uplifting and encouraging ! 1-10 i give 10+
