I'm fine with the Pistols, but Sid's status in the band is way overrated. Glen Matlock was the Pistol's bassist plain and simple. Sid was more about destroying himself than anything else, didn't even make it past 21. He's just a punk rock poster boy and the guy's life is something to be pitied not looked up to.
You're all wrong. The Stooges and MC5 where garage rock and the protagonist to punk rock. The Ramones who were influenced by the Stooges, New York Dolls, and various garage bands created the punk rock sound which came out of a repetitive 4 to the flour percussion and Johnny's wall of sound down stroke style of guitar play.
There was no official punk genre before the Ramones. Johnny and Tommy came up with a simplified way to create rhythm due to their amateur skills and stumbled on the sound by accident.
It was great to see this vid. I was at this show in '77, I believe it was the first time the Dead Boys played in LA. This was in the very early days of punk when there was a lot of spitting. I remember Stiv hawking up and letting fly about twenty feet and Cheetah catching it in his mouth - now that's punk! This was also before slamming or mosh pits, at most, heavy pogoing. Great energy, and Stiv was a total wild man, in the vein of his hero Iggy.
the sex pistols barley did shit for the punk scene. all they did was listen to the stooges and play like them, but act more like dicks and sell out. the dead boys were way better, all the sex pistols basically cared about was getting laid and getting paid. they were the punk's backstreet boys
You're fucking retarded you faggot cunt!,the pistols were different than that, they had/ve their own style, their vocalist J. Rotten was pretty much different from all those mainstream pop sell outs, even more, they had their own fucking attitude and more.
get yourself on some good music and don't be so ignorant.
Johnny Rotten truly was a genius of rock. Now, where The Ramones started the sound of punk, Sex Pistols really riled up the attitude. Johnny was against everything punk went into, the whole "I can be a dick to anyone and be cool because I'm a punk" movement.
Basically, The Sex Pistols started the movement that led to the Dead Boys thrashing America.
With all of that said, I prefer Stiv and Cheetah to Johnny and Steve musically. Just me though. Its all good.
Its weird how no one TRULY had or has the so called punk sound other than the sex pistols. all the rest ultimately sound like garage bands with the vague sense of rip-off. As spare as the sex pistols were, they had the ring of polish and pro and uniqueness that no others have
I would add the Ramones to that, but otherwise, I completely agree. Not that I was there or anything, I'm just going by bootlegs and footage I've seen. Sure wish I hadda been there, and old enough to enjoy it, as I was only 10 in '77.
Yeah they were! when Ramones went to England to play the ''It's Alive'' show, Johnny Rotten went up to the backstage and asked Arturo Vega, to let him meet the band, but he was too scared and he thought that Ramones would beat him up, cause everyone thought Ramones were like a gang from Queens. :p
thats the point. punk isnt about your skill or how great you are. i mean the romones hated guitar solos! and sid didnt even kno how to play bass when he joined the pistols. none of that shit matters its the fact that your different and you wanna make a statment and this is the music you love. thats what anarchy is its chaos and thats punk bitch
sid was an idiot, if you wanna see what rock n roll and punk is all about look at keith richards, hes not just an asshole with an attitude. Now the Dead boys those were guys could really make a statement and make a musical masterpeace out of it, sex pistols suck without matlock, no soul.
AWESOME! I don't care what anybody says about quality, cause first off, it's the Dead Boys (well, mostly) and second, I got a b&w pro-shot CBGBs vid of them that ain't great quality, but kicks ASS over the DVD available now! this was great! (and I'm in LOVE with Melinda Jones! whoever she is...)
Thanks for posting, one of the best things I've seen in some time on here!!!
have you seen the punk look for teens today? I dunno anymore. It's this whole fuckin' hair salon hairstyle, vintage t-shirt's that aren't vintage just crap from hot topic or aeropastle (yeah, that's punk. major clothing line punk?) and fucking dinge wear everywhere. I consider myself punk because I do everything punk. DIY. my clothes are fucked because I don't make that much. Not because that's the look. Fuck poseurs.
You're full of bullshit. Punk is a fsshion, and you're a victim. Too bad it's over thirty years old. You dress punk because you're a dumb cunt with no personal sense of style, you don't make any money because you're a loser, and you call yourself a punk because you're a fucking poser.
fuck u if u think punk is all about fashion..the reason why punk dress like what u think is beacuz punk is more meaningful evry single word in the shirt have all reason so fuck off and die u father fucker!!!
In the begining, punk had it's whole do-your-own-thing atitude as the hippie movement of the '60s did. I remember being a teenager in the '90s, a punker had to have a green flight jacket adorned with badges, a Misfits T-shirt, and so many holes on their Doc Martin steel toe boots. It was so friggin' contrived and we thought we were being so different. What a joke.

I was at this show! Used to LOVE the Starwood so much...would'ntcha know it that the most notorious gangster in LA would have to own it! He just had to botch it up by slaughtering four drug dealers on Wonderland Ave....now there's nothing but a mini mall where it used to be.
