Sabayon as an OS sucks. The effects doesn't make the OS better than another. how about use Sabayon without Compiz/beryl and then argue its better than windows 7.

The features blows windows out of the water, but popularity usually wins, and people also don't like change which is why i think windows will always be on top. OS X is cool too. :)

You're an idiot. People will never use linux until it is way easier to use. Ubuntu is getting closer, but it isn't there yet. When it takes 3 hours to load a basic program because your tracking down dependencies and it won't compile people will give up, trust me.

It probably does, all you need is about 700mb of RAM for all those apps simultaniously and for just the cool effects (compiz), you'll only need about 300mb RAM.
Not true. For running the live cd in 3d desktop mode it needs 256-512 ram at least a K6 or P2 processor and open GL. For running the hard disk install you need 192-256 ram and 10g hard drive space. Both sets of pre-req's are VERY basic. I've run Sabayon on a machine that had these minimum requirements on purpose as a test and it ran smoothly and efficiently.
sabayon may be feature rich, but its hopeless when it comes to wireless networking. ubuntu is by far the best when it comes to wireless, hopefully it wont be long before the other distros catch up. cos most things are going wireless now

I'm new to linux, and was wondering what dual booting takes. On the loading screen do you simply select which os you want to run? Also, do you have sabayon on the hard drive, or are you cd/dvd booting it? I think it would be awesome to be able to do double-boot like this, b/c it's like the best of both worlds. When an app isn't compatible with linux, you could switch to Vista, XP, or whatever. Thanks for your help.
you turn on your machine, select the OS you wanna run from a menu using the up n' down keys and it boots into the OS. as for sabayon, you can download it (but beware, takes forever with about 3-4 GB of OS) or buy it for like $5 and have it shipped to you and it is all on live DVD, run the OS without ever installing it but that way is slower than actually installing it
or you could run any os you want in a virtual box. search youtube for running windows on linux or something and you wil find video's of it.With the right setting you can even deticate one side of the beryl cube to another os!don't ask me how, i don use it. but you can switch between os on the fly !
yeah but virtual boxes tend to be slower then actually dual booting your computer...but then again i guess if you want to just try linux it is more practical as it saves you a lot of hassles with partitioning if you havent done that before or dont feel confident with dual booting.

ok on sabayon there are some problems with wlan for a few wifi cards but on PCLINUXOS they have integrated ndiswrapper and with the proprietary drivers you can works very well with WLAN AND you don't have to make that at each REBOOT.
what about WLAN on sabayon? cuz i had loads of problems with my intel WLAN card on other distros, in fact the only one it worked with in the end was opensuse 10.2 - and even there i had to boot it at every startup via ndiswrapper. are there good network config tools on sabayon, cuz on e.g. on suse you had to configure everything through the knetwork, yast + bash, sucked a bit.
yeah... but sadly it was only SUPPOSED to... sabayon has actually the highest user friendlyness as long as you don't need to work with the system config. cuz the config tools are the point where opensuse/fedora are way better than all other distros... + in sabayon either comipzfusion OR hardware t'n'l in apps worked, couldn't achieve to get both running, X always crashed, and the man pages are pure horror xD
thats what beryl is for. Better management for your windows and applications helps with productivity. I dont care for vistas eye candy, mostly because it slows everything down even on a new computer. With linux beryl isnt nowhere near as demanding. This is just for show, u can always turn off the bling. But if you cant see behind the eye candy how could you expect to ever grasp the concepts?
for me the best distro is pclinus for works and for fun with the eye candy and the beryl effects, i work on a double boot xp_pclinusos and it' amazing what can i do with that confid.

Yah GNU/linux is terrible. Thats why all the companies that need powerful computers use them including alot of websites such as google and youtube( the one your on right now ). actually vista isnt great for gaming. Infact open gl 2.1 has already got DX10 beat. And its going to see a performance decrease of 50% on windows. Opengl 3.0 is also coming out this year. However windows right now is easier for people or are new to computers just like macos. But i think macosx is much better for newbies.

I'm not a Vista fanboy, I myself use Kubuntu as my primary OS, but OS means much more than just beautiful desktop effects.
now you can do same things like sabayon with PCLINUXOS, I RUN PCLINUXOS on a portable ibm x31, it's awesome too and for me the wifi configuration is on the top with a gui for ndiswrapper on the install.
i used the DVD 3.3 live disk of Sabayon and i didnt like the Gnome interface all that much i installed 3.2 from a CD in the past and it was a experience i plan on reinstalling Sabayon when ever i get some more HDDs
Altough this version of Linux is really advanced the effects look overdone. The reason that its a Vista killer is because to make use of all this Linux doen't requier a SUPER COMPUTER to run smoothly, just like Mac OS X, but it still doensn't look as easy to use a Mac OS X Tiger.
Linux will never kill OS X on a mac, nothing ever will. You don't buy a mac to get a mac you are buying OS X may it be in a Laptop, Desktop or other form. I'm new to linux, and was wondering what dual booting takes. On the loading screen do you simply select which os you want to run? Also, do you have sabayon on the hard drive, or are you cd/dvd booting it? I think it would be awesome to be able to do double-boot like this, b/c it's like the best of both worlds. When an app isn't compatible with linux, you could switch to Vista, XP, or whatever. Thanks for your help.

yea, you seem to have a pretty good idea of it.
you turn on your machine, select the OS you wanna run from a menu using the up n' down keys and it boots into the OS. as for sabayon, you can download it (but beware, takes forever with about 3-4 GB of OS) or buy it for like $5 and have it shipped to you and it is all on live DVD, run the OS without ever installing it but that way is slower than actually installing it

or you could run any os you want in a virtual box. search youtube for running windows on linux or something and you wil find video's of it.With the right setting you can even deticate one side of the beryl cube to another os!don't ask me how, i don use it. but you can switch between os on the fly !

yeah but virtual boxes tend to be slower then actually dual booting your computer...but then again i guess if you want to just try linux it is more practical as it saves you a lot of hassles with partitioning if you havent done that before or dont feel confident with dual booting.

the wave effects are pointless and distracting... everything elese is cool though :] Sabayon has a cool looking interface, but it's still linux so it's not really user friendly like Mac or Windows and doesn't fully support wireless. Linux is pretty, but what's the point?

Thats a bit unfair, the point is it's a very easy to use os with items like openofice free. 90% of internet sites out there are hosted by linux servers. Linux can be very useful to programmers and to people who know how to use it.

ok on sabayon there are some problems with wlan for a few wifi cards but on PCLINUXOS they have integrated ndiswrapper and with the proprietary drivers you can works very well with WLAN AND you don't have to make that at each REBOOT.

what about WLAN on sabayon? cuz i had loads of problems with my intel WLAN card on other distros, in fact the only one it worked with in the end was opensuse 10.2 - and even there i had to boot it at every startup via ndiswrapper. are there good network config tools on sabayon, cuz on e.g. on suse you had to configure everything through the knetwork, yast + bash, sucked a bit.

wlan is actullay supposed to work right out of the box with sabayon...all in all im convinced its the prettiest/best/easiest linux distro out there

yeah... but sadly it was only SUPPOSED to... sabayon has actually the highest user friendlyness as long as you don't need to work with the system config. cuz the config tools are the point where opensuse/fedora are way better than all other distros... + in sabayon either comipzfusion OR hardware t'n'l in apps worked, couldn't achieve to get both running, X always crashed, and the man pages are pure horror xD

thats what beryl is for. Better management for your windows and applications helps with productivity. I dont care for vistas eye candy, mostly because it slows everything down even on a new computer. With linux beryl isnt nowhere near as demanding. This is just for show, u can always turn off the bling. But if you cant see behind the eye candy how could you expect to ever grasp the concepts?

its not that hard to configure if you're willing to put some fucking time into it. i never touched linux until a year ago had no clue wtf a root user was... so i installed ubuntu and started reading on the forums found several helpful things about it now i run it as my default o/s. its faster than windows and osx never gets viruses and has far superior tech support. you're a narrow minded retard if you think otherwise.

Yah GNU/linux is terrible. Thats why all the companies that need powerful computers use them including alot of websites such as google and youtube( the one your on right now ). Now if you want help setting it up just ask. Any of us would be glad to help. I reccommend starting out with ubuntu GNU/Linux and visiting the forums there with whatever problems you might have.

actually vista isnt great for gaming. Infact open gl 2.1 has already got DX10 beat. And its going to see a performance decrease of 50% on windows. Opengl 3.0 is also coming out this year. However windows right now is easier for people or are new to computers just like macos. But i think macosx is much better for newbies.

No it is not available for Vista, it is a Linux only app.
If you install Linux if you have a windows install cd you can put Windows back on your computer if for what ever reason you don't like it.

the video is a demo of the possibility but you can customise your desktop as you want, with a lot of 3D effetcs or not.

It's not what he meant, i think. The effects you showed are indeed beautiful, but the claim that sabayon is better than vista still can't be justified.
And I agree with shamushand that most of the effects are useless. They look so cool but they don't give us any benefit at all.
I'm not a Vista fanboy, I myself use Kubuntu as my primary OS, but OS means much more than just beautiful desktop effects.
Btw you've made me wanna try sabayon :)

now you can do same things like sabayon with PCLINUXOS, I RUN PCLINUXOS on a portable ibm x31, it's awesome too and for me the wifi configuration is on the top with a gui for ndiswrapper on the install.

i used the DVD 3.3 live disk of Sabayon and i didnt like the Gnome interface all that much i installed 3.2 from a CD in the past and it was a experience i plan on reinstalling Sabayon when ever i get some more HDDs

Altough this version of Linux is really advanced the effects look overdone. The reason that its a Vista killer is because to make use of all this Linux doen't requier a SUPER COMPUTER to run smoothly, just like Mac OS X, but it still doensn't look as easy to use a Mac OS X Tiger.
