  • your flying man, good shit

  • Awesome transcription, I think i'll check my accuracy with the Modern Drummer issue whenI'm finished, cant wait to post my video of this.

  • my maaan that waas sweeet!

  • thanks for transcription

    its a really sick solo

i saw him live playing with chick corea

  • DAMN

  • totally worthy of guido shed time. i can't imagine the marina/spaghetti that was consumed before and after playing!!!

  • Congratulations, good drumming! Looks like "Jazz Crimes" is becoming a new classic.

  • it must have taken you so long to transcribe this man. well done.

  • do you have sheet music for the solo?

if so could you post it?

  • @Funkblaster77

I do have the sheet music, but unless I'm mistaken, wasn't the transcription recently posted in an issue of Modern Drummer? I don't have a scanner, so it might be easier to try to find it online. I will post it up if nobody can find it, though.

  • @Funkblaster77

Hey, just wanted to get back to you and let you know that the MD issue I was referring to was the December 2009 issue. The full solo is transcribed there!

  • Goddamn that was cool!

  • ahaaaaa so badass

  • Dude those are some epic rolls you got there. NICE

  • @JerryOnDrums Clark Terry is still alive!

  • Wow, good work man,

  • great!

  • yeah!! keep on groovin'!

  • Awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome awesome.

  • very inspiring! ....Blade is The Man! ...we all love and worship his playing.

  • I actually don't think this is a particularly brilliant or interesting solo but I have to admit you played it well. The snare rolls at about 0:35 were especially cool! Have you heard Paul Motian's drum solo on Bill Evans' version of Israel? It's totally off the hook!

  • At some point, transcribing is essiential. As a drummer, not only do I transcibe drum parts and solos, but also bass lines and even solos by Miles, Cannonball, and Dexter Gordon. So much can be learned by being able to transcribe their solo and look and see how they put it together, how things were placed. Sounds to me like the transcription-haters here are the ones that dont know how to transcribe...

  • To anyone that believes transcribing is a negative aspect of becoming an accomplished musician: I played in the past with Jon Faddis. (if you don't know who that is you need not read further nor should you be criticizing anyones ideas towards jazz) Throughout the entirety of our hang he asked me about countless solos, all performed by legendary jazz musicians. If there was ever one he might catch me on(and trust me there were) he made me transcribe it.

Good work man, this shit sounds great!

  • Rad. Care to share the transcription?

  • @justinhaaheim pick up december 2009 modern drummer... its in there towards the back

  • great playing friend....and these are by far the most intelligent and helpful comments ive ever seen on youtube. im sick of hearing from ignorant players its refreshing to hear some wisdom!

  • and if you don't learn from those before you, you got nothing! "ya but find your own voice"....no!.....it takes years transcribing listening playing and imitating to find your own voice, hows your voice gonna be any good when you dont know squat!

  • Thank you!!! Couldn't have said it better myself.

  • i prefer the youtube live version of the solo rather than the cd, but this was great playing! you can get tense when playing something like that thats planned out, but you weren't!

  • JERRY IS MY HERO!!!!!!!!!!!

  • "imitate- assimilate- innovate" - Clark Terry

    Awesome playing dude

  • If you ever want to sound as good as your musical heroes, do you not think it would be wise to learn how they think? Even if you don't transcribe, you still speak a language you've picked up from others who have come before you, whether what you say is original or not.

  • i dont think you should sound like anyone just do your own thing. i dont wanna sound like my heros i wanna sound like BRIAN EVANS

  • "just do your own thing" - yeah, AFTER you learn how to play the drums and express what you want to say. This guy's just trying to learn some new vocabulary from a player he digs, why are you SO insistent on trying to call us all down for transcribing?

  • Agreeeeed.

but aslong as now he listens to this aswell as plays it. . and from there goes. . well i could do this instead at this part and it would sound awsome. . development starts from copying. then creation begins.

  • yep

  • agreed, trancribing is like READING BOOKS, the more you do it the bigger your vocabulary gets

  • never heard of him,

  • Well isn't this an interesting debate - this "be original or die" crowd vs. the traditional jazz pedagogical method of transcription. Listen people, how are you going to say anything original if you don't know how to speak the language. You learned your native tongue from masters (your parents and loved ones), don't you think it'd be smart to learn the language of music straight from the masters?

  • Fantastic point!!

  • make your own language never preconcive, the dude who originally played this solo (brian blade) made this solo in the moment

  • "make your own language"

Good luck with that, I wonder if anyone will be able to understand you if you're speaking a language your made up ENTIRELY BY YOURSELF.

    ....

  • *a language "you've" made up*

  • they made up the language

  • Kurvajó!!!!!! :) A kottát nem tennéd közzé?:)

  • great work!

  • good job keeping tempo

  • Great job! A lot of work transcribing it I bet, but the only way up ;-)

  • great job with it man you did it awesomely really good, id love to see what you can play though.... tisk tisk

  • really nice work man.... but in my opinion brians solos are untranscribable.. cause u cant trancribe the spirit and the soul of those solos... so u will never be comfortable with ur self by playing this.... he is untouchable..like his solos...so dont try to imitate, try to find some new solos for this heavy groovin shit :P but anyway nice work GJ

  • no way, you gotta at LEAST try to learn the master's work.

Don't listen to this guy, he's got his head up his ass.

Nice work, but try to loosen up a bit more feel instead of calculate, now that you've "got it".

  • WOW!!!!!!! There is no way that you are a jazz musician.... He is doing the right thing!!! This is the way you learn to play the language and get the all the nuances in the music. That was such a wrong statement on soo many levels man..... Note to the player: GREAT JOB KEEPIN TRANSCRIBING ANYONE YOU LIKE.... DO IT ALL

  • Shows how much you know about "real jazz drummers." Everyone has licks they pull from. Do some close listening to a single drummer, say, Max Roach, and you'll find that surprise! A lick might come up in more than a few places.

To our esteemed transcriber: good job with it! There's a lot of subtlety in that solo and a wealth of information to help you go further.

  • yea but its being used in an original context its not like max roach memorizes exactly what hes going to do in his solo your pissing on jazz

  • Oh come on now, solo transcription (and yes, being able to play the solo is part of transcription) is is common practice. Miles did it. Jackie McLean did it. Lord knows 'Tain did it. Joshua Redman did it. Doesn't mean they'll play the verbatim solo on a gig, but it gives vocabulary to draw from.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. And thanks for the kind words!

  • Just so we're clear here: you DO realize that I transcribed this *specifically* as an exercise, right? When I play this song with my quartet, I do NOT play the transcribed solo; my vocabulary, naturally, is much better though after having done the work to figure out what Blade himself played...

  • ^That was in response to drummrguy's post, by the way.

  • Awesome!

    xJ

  • What the hell man, that's just rude. Here's the thing: EVERYONE transcribes. Redman does it, as he alludes to many times throughout interviews. Jazz musicians of any note do it, because it's a useful exercise to help us learn to formulate our own solos. I'm taught to transcribe at university, by my teachers and friends, etc. etc. There's nothing wrong with it at all, and saying that this guy is "pissing on jazz" (also, it's 'you're' - not 'your') is uncalled for and patently untrue.

  • hey jazzfanman bartminator is more jazz than you will ever be dont you know about improv? just do what you feel and never follow i did a cover of this song but i played my own thing because i dont copy

  • Hey, don't worry drummrguy! When I play this song with my quartet, I don't rip this solo. :-) It was merely an exercise to gain more vocabulary. Thanks!

  • Brian Blade plays with an intensity, soul, and groove that a select few have ever experienced. I think it's good to learn from what the masters play, whether that means transcribing or just taking bits and pieces of things you hear and incorporating them into your playing. but don't expect to play a contrived solo and gain the same result that was originally achieved.

  • Yo....u nice!

  • awesome

  • I haven't heard this song in forever! I love Brian Blade. What time signature is this in again?

  • It would be in the good 'ol 4/4.

  • it plays with you because it starts on the and of 1

  • hey at 35sec, what are those sixlets? can someone right down the hand variations? like L L R R L R ... etc. THANKS!

  • Do you mean the lick going up the toms, or the lick right after that between the cymbals?

  • ya the cymbals

  • Great job! I'm working on this tune myself, though I won't have time to transcribe the solo. You sound great!

  • nice you should explore some traditional grip and it would look 10000x cooler. just sayin

  • haha, right on. I used to play traditional exclusively, but since I started playing in wedding bands and rock groups, the matched-grip has taken over. But I do still aspire to play more traditional grip!!

  • word, at least youre not oblivious to its magical powers

  • You should try to do Blades' live solo on YouTube too.

  • What cymbals are you using for this one?

  • I have a pair of super old Zildjian 13" K/Z hi-hats, and a 20" Constantinople Medium-Thin Low (on the right), and then a 20" Sabian Manhattan Ride on the left; I have since replaced the Manhattan with an Ozone Ride though. Thanks for listening!

  • great! very taste and nice set

  • Thank you very much! She's my baby!

  • Nice work on the transcription, although your phrasing is much different than Brian's on that record.

  • No doubt! He's a tough player to emulate. :)

  • Do you have that written out?

  • Yes, but it's all handwritten, unfortunately. I'm working on putting it into Sibelius, so I might be able to share it sometime soon. :)

  • Yeah man. Its crazy what he does isn't it?

  • No doubt about that. Blade is the sickest.

  • oh shit! those are gretsch's arent they?

    Love it.

  • Yep!! They're my babies. Purchased brand new by my father in 1976, and handed down to me.

    Thanks for the kind words!

  • Nice job!

  • I need more swing! Good job!
