  • I hope that guy finds this song and realizes how much of an ass he was

  • Don't worry Caroline, so much fish in the sea, he can be in front of you, some people you just don't see, I know you're feeling lonely, like there's no one on this land, and when everything seems phony, please know I understand, I understand...

  • I cried.

    Is that normal?

  • I aways thought this song was about two people who met on an online dating site and the dude went into the bar or whatever and saw her and left because he didnt like her and left and never talked to her again

  • 8 people are taking this way to personal.

  • The guy stood the girl up because she wasn't good looking enough for him I believe.

  • I really like this song, great melody, good vocals, and it makes me think. But I'm not sure what's the story to the song, someone help me out haha

  • I can't get over how beautiful this song is.

  • I think the most strongest part is

"I never got your name. I assume your 33. Your voice, it sounded kind. I hope that you like me. When you see my face, I hope that you don't laugh. I'm not a film-star-beauty. I'll send a photograph... I hope that you don't laugh".

  • i spent an hour trying to figure out my password just to say that i love this song.

    so, i love this song.

  • "Is it you or me" is such a great line, means something entirely different beginning than it does in the end. The sad, lonely undertones are beautiful in this song, I love it.

  • i can't stop listening to this.

  • So powerful

  • This is the most profound song I've ever heard.

It just has so much to it. It sounds like snowfall, it feels like heartbreak, it looks like a scene from another world, it smells like an empty room, it tastes cold and bittersweet. It's just so beautiful. I'm addicted.

  • Truth is, the heavier your heart it, the more unattractive you are to the other gender, apparently. I think.

  • I've been this guy and feel terrible about it now, sorry!

Now I only date the old fashion way. . . You know? Meeting in a bar, lying about who you are, getting her in your car and then hangover pancakes in the morning. . .If she catches you sneaking out that is.

(This is not intended to be a factual statement.)

  • Amazing song. So mysteriously beautiful

  • I think heavy could be interpreted as both, 'fat' and as emotional baggage, perhaps he saw her in the bar/pub and thought she was too large, and decided he'd prefer someone a little skinnier, so changed what he was looking for.

  • @Soaruh i'm not sure that's what they mean by 'heavy'. i think 'heavy' just means that she carries a lot of emotional weight.

but hey, the beauty of lyrics are that they can be interpreted however you please~! :)

  • It seems we are observing a dialog through classifieds wherein both parties are unable to see eye to eye without understanding why. We don't have all the information, and can therefore only speculate. However after the failed rendezvous she may assume he has no real interest, still single M changes from "you and me" to "you or me" implying that he does not understand the nature of her disinterest, and that they both are not able to overcome the obstacles in the communication.

  • I believe that he didn't leave because she was "fat" or "ugly" when she talks about dealing with a loss and not exactly being a hottie, she could have gotten into an accident with her old lover and he died and she didnt, and she's had scars since, or she could be a very emotionally disturbed person who inflicts pain on herself over the loss of her past love? idk just ideas in a different perspective

  • <3

  • beautiful song. so painful to listen to.

  • i've always imagined her being in a terrible accident that killed her love and left her disfigured :(

  • @chadtvu I've thought the same thing!! Glad to know I'm not the only one

  • "not a film star beauty" :'(

  • Please if someone could tell me some bands/artists with the same kind of music, pm me or something thanks :)

  • @5ode hey check out the XX, more awesome indie stuff, for example:

  • @5ode hey check out the XX, more awesome indie stuff, for example look up "The XX, Stars"

  • @slayerat5280 Thank you ! After listening the song "stars" sounds promising :)

  • To interpret the usage of heavy as overweight is way too literal for a Stars song. It also doesn't make sense since he saw her ("I'll send a photograph", "I was sure you saw me"). The guy doesn't want to deal with her overbearing problems and emotions ("must enjoy the sun, must enjoy the sea, nothing too heavy"), which is a very superficial perspective anyway.

  • 2:16 'I was sure you saw me but it wasn't meant to be''...I have no words for this song..

  • 1:13 kills me every time .

  • This shows the pains of love. that when you think you finally fall in love, sometimes no one catches you

  • quite a whisper of a song, makes me want to put the volume up. the background music is very subtle

  • The best one)

  • Amazing.<333

  • ABSOLUTE BEST STARS SONG

  • Don't cry Caroline! He was probably a douche anyway. You're better off without him. I mean "must enjoy the sun, must enjoy the sea"? Oh how original. Douche.

  • @LightsOfBohemia LOL....true

  • @LightsOfBohemia Lol forsure!!!

  • @LightsOfBohemia i couldn't agree more. He just wants a good-looking girl to parade around or whatever. He doesn't deserve Caroline, she's too good for him...

  • I think it's meant to be both. It's showing the shallow nature of love, but also the emotional implications.

No matter, the song is brilliant either way you take it.

  • Dont the song seem kinda sad?

  • People need to calm down.

There are 2 meanings of "heavy", and both are applicable here.

that's the beauty of Stars - dual meanings whoaaaaa

  • I've thought about this for days and days, and I believe that "heavy" means physically heavy. I'm as confident in my opinion as everyone else seems to be in their's. That doesn't make me superficial or close minded. Damn shit. If this song is really as raw and true as it is, then "heavy" means fat. It makes more sense that way in reality and in the lyrics. It's a better song with that in mind.

Also, I recognize that this is in my opinion. You all should recognize that too about your opinions.

  • This song is absolutely beautiful.

  • 420 likes ;) Thas wassup.

  • DID HE NOT COME BECAUSE HE DIDN'T LIKE HER PICTURE? :( i don't get it...

  • Great song!! Check out danish act Inouwee with the song "In every mirror" if you like this.

  • This is simply beautiful.

  • heavy song

  • I feel like I'm eavesdropping ...

  • @shaddow123caroline I know well put great song

  • best song ever, and it comes with the best lyrics too?

    omg;O

  • Well, its about personal ads in the paper, right? Or something of that sort? Seems to me that the man was looking for a one night stand or something easy. I looked the lyrics up and his first 'request' said that he was looking for a single woman under 33 who enjoyed the sun and sea. The last line of thee song line has a similar ad, that I presume is from the same guy but this time it ads 'nothing too heavy'. Maybe his not showing up had to do with that?

  • i think most people initially imagine an overweight person when they hear the song describe them as heavy. it's just how we are as a society, almost everything has to do with how one looks/superficial stuff. most of us just remember there are more ways/reasons to be "heavy" and that they are not all physical.

also, i think stars wrote this in the way that they did and kept "heavy" ambiguous so that we'd all have this discussion.

  • 6 people its a shame

  • i think that yeah, in the song they meant `heavy` as in emotional baggage, but anyone whos met anybody off craigslist knows that `heavy` usually goes both ways..

  • nice

  • I think it's important to note that in the beginning of the song he says "Is it you and me?" but in the end he says "Is it you or me?"

It shows that he's the one that's "heavy", looking for someone simple so he can continue to hide from his own problems and too afraid to actually meet the girl in the song.

  • This song needs a music video ASAP! so wonderful <3

  • @ceeheartsu Jap! Where they looking at each other the whole time. Only sitting there starin.

  • My name is Caroline :D which gives me even more reason to have an undying love to this song, it is sooo beautiful, although I don't really understand fully the meaning, I find it so depressingly beautiful.

  • this song is soo deep!

  • he got cold feet. this world can be so hard

  • I've been trying to find this song again for weeks - I'm so glad I've finally discovered it again. This song is so beautiful, and sad.

  • au ai simghera mgruzavs bliiin :(

  • lovely song :)

  • I just heard this song for the first time, but it really struck me hard because I think "heavy" is actually used in both terms for this song; physically and mentally heavy. When Caroline says "heavy", she means emotional baggage. In canon, this may be because of her looks, her self-esteem, her loneliness, loss, etc. She strives to get past her emotional "heavy" and reach out to someone else to grasp hope and love, and only finds a shallow close-minded man who ditches her for a physical "heavy".

  • @MusicForAries

Also to elaborate on why he's shallow; Caroline says "I guess we'll never meet", and the lines "I thought I saw you, I thought you saw me.." shows that he did show up, saw her, then took off. If it was her emotional baggage, he would've never shown up to begin with. The ending line of "Is it you or me?" really shows sympathy to Caroline was well, asking, "who is it to blame for this sadness? you or me?"

  • This song got to my heart. I feel both of their pain.

  • i dont understand

  • You know, I'm not so much sure that's he's shallow. The very end of the song, he adds to his original "wanted" bio, saying "Nothing too heavy" which, I think he's just not ready to start a new relationship with someone so emotionally unstable, which is understandable. Although, in another sense, it could be a mixture of being shallow and not wanting a needy, emotional person in his life. Perhaps he was scared of something new, but either way this song is heart breaking and very easy to relate.

  • Heavy shit here, folks.

  • Not that it matters, because it's a beautiful song and everyone cant get what they want from it...but I don't think he left because she was unattractive. She sent him a picture before their aborted date. He knew what she looked like and he still showed up anyway. I think he just couldn't force himself to up to her. He already said "these things can be scary". Relationships, especially new ones, are scary...I think both characters are feeling damaged and "heavy" and just can't bridge the gap.

  • wow I think you guys are right. This entire time I saw it as one way. He's insensative, how could he do that to her? Things like that, but really, how could he do that to himself? wow this song already opened my eyes, but looking at it like that just makes me more aware I think. Kudos to Stars.

  • the thing about this song is... just once, i would like to experience something like this myself. because not once have i met a woman who was (that) insecure about herself and wanted to meet somebody more than i did.

  • From what I gather, the girl is very self conscious of her looks as well as losing probably her husband/ex-bf. On his side, is that he's either very shallow or he makes up excuses to not go through with them

  • ,,,

  • @HeresSeem khkh

  • If it is about emotional baggage, than why did single m leave without saying anything? I agree... maybe that when she says "Sorry to be heavy" she is talking about her emotional baggage. However, she also states "When you see my face, I hope that you don't laugh. I'm not a film-star beauty, a center photograph... I hope that you don't laugh."

    She's obviously not attractive.

  • @TheCrow2X it's "i'll send a photograph". and believe it or not, there are people with low self-esteem. i've met at least one hottie who was anorexic and bulimic because she couldn't see how beautiful she was (but don't feel too bad because aside from her looks, she was really convinced of herself and did not tolerate any other views than hers. for all i care, she can die alone in her thirties - which is not some wish on my part but what her doctor said).

  • For some odd reason this song is "our" song. I had not actually realized what the lyrics were.

Happy memories sticking to a terribly sad song, how fucked up is that?

  • i agree that the main topic is the guy's shallowness, but i believe what truly makes the song crushing at the end is that even he realizes how shallow he is; which is depressing in itself

  • I think the song is meant to be ambiguous. I think that is what's so beautiful about it, other than the execution, singing, piano, ect.. I don't think the lyrics would be as moving if it wasn't open to your own interpretation.

    I think it's beautiful.

  • What an amazing song. =]

  • ;________;

  • Love this song.

    So true...so sad....

  • its obviously emotional baggage. i mean when single m then starts saying at the end nothing too heavy you can tell cause if they were talking bout fat it would be no one to heavy

  • I actually thought that is song was about her physical appearance, I think it's just a really sad song about how shallow the guy was, at the end he says send photo to address, so now he wants to see the girls before he meets them.

  • I don't get how people cool enough to listen to stars could be dumb enough to think it meant fat. If this song is all about a guy not wanting a fat girl, then this sin't the band I thought it was

  • if the song is about her physical appearance does that make it suck? I think it's about the shallowness of the guy and its a sad song. Listen to the last line of the song

  • I think she means "heavy" as in emotionally. She mentioned to be "grieving over loss, sorry to be heavy, but heavy is the cost, heavy is the cost," so she means that she has emotional baggage, and that makes her unattractive to the guy going to meet her, basically.

  • @309633246 geez you are talking bullshit.

  • not bullshit at all

  • Right after she says grieving over loss, sorry to be heavy. She's apologizing for being so serious, in my opinion it's got nothing to do with weight. Maybe she was fat, don't think it's related to her comment. good song though

  • @309633246 You're retarded.

  • sign of heavy denial, shooting down what I think, if you seriously believed otherwise you wouldn't waste your time replying and you should also work on your social skills. Calling a complete stranger retarded is not very polite, actually it makes you sound like swine. Good day!

  • @309633246 You're still retarded.

  • .. i cried listening to this song

  • I think he goes to see her

but he can't really handle it

and the whole situation symbolizes relationships

that they can be impersonal but, ultimately you learn from them to move on and improve

^ I get the latter part from the song when he asks for a photo from the next pool of applicants and tells his age. (which he learned to do from her, obviously)

  • this is SO beautiful. such simple lyrics filled with so much meaning & emotion.

  • The song is heartbreaking.. When she says "Your voice it sounded kind, I hope that you like me" and she sounds hopeful.

  • Since "heavy" seems to be the topic, I think in the start of the song, Heavy means something emotional. However, personals are very superficial. It's a small line of text telling others to try and fit into the seeker's scope. Near the end, Heavy turns physical and she is then rejected after he receives her photograph. Anyway, that is my theory. I think he may be heavy as well, considering he never sends his name or photograph (or he may be a player). Key phrase here is double- entente.

  • this song made me cry :(

  • Heavy here means that she is full of sadness inside so that makes her feel heavy. When we get rid of our peroblems we feel light and energized. yeah? it,s definatelty not her weight.

  • Like heavy with emotion.

  • I completely agree with you, ppl can't pick up on someone having heavy emotional baggage before they even speak to them in person unless they were superhuman and had telepathy skills

  • heavy as in baggage not weight ........

  • all this time i thought it was heavy as in overweight. but if it meant overweight, then he wouldn't have agreed to meet up in the first place. it wasn't meant to be.

  • The song shouldn't feel different to you because of someone's opinion. The song is what you feel it is.

  • When she says "sorry to be heavy, but heavy is the cost" she doesn't mean heavy as in overweight. Notice that before this, she says "grieving over loss." She means 'heavy' as in really emotional.

  • I see allot of people responding in a way that he stood her up. Probably because she is not to pretty. But she said she would send a photograph so he knew what to espect. My theory is that he got cold feet of her emotional bagage not her physical.

  • @JuliasMorningstar she means both actually.

  • @JuliasMorningstar Who would think that they mean heavy? That would be a little rude wouldn't it?

  • @KobePatrol baggage?

  • what a great song...how true it is!

  • magnifique chanson ; j'adoore! =)

  • I'm so confused with this song.

I love it and all, but I don't think it's because she was grieving because he still wanted to meet her after she admitted to that. And it's not the physical part either, because she said " I thought once that I saw you, I thought that you saw me " and then " I was sure you saw me " so he showed up?

Ooohh they make you think, but I don't want to think this much.

  • makes me feel kind of lonley.. but its such a pretty song.

  • I just listened to this for the first time.

But so far, I've listened to it over 7 times,

    it's so good.

  • I LOVE <3 this song! I cant stop listening to it.

  • It could either be baggage as fat, or baggage as in emotional baggage.

    Stars makes you think.

    (:

  • i think its emotional. He says he doesn't want anything too heavy. But that can't mean fat because that's just mean to put in the classifieds

  • I can never understand why people take the superficial interpretation of "heavy" (physically) as correct.

People are heavy in the sense they're emotionally unstable and needy and negative, which is natural, I think, but not something we necessarily are proud of, or want around us for that matter.

It's amazing; this song'll have me crying for hours and the reason behind it has nothing to do with the song sometimes...haha, the melody's just brilliant I guess (:

  • But if the word "heavy" isn't meant physically, then: She tells him shes heavy; She even sends a photo; From the words "I was sure you saw me" you can assume that he came to the meeting and really saw her, but didnt walk up to her. But why? The reason couldnt have been that she looked (because he only saw her) too heavy emotionally because you cant really see things like that in a person you dont know. So i guess she must have looked too heavy physically. Anyways, I think its both Em & Ph

  • And now I want to cry. This song is really beautiful.

  • It's really sad that so many people here don't understand this song. It's really quite simple...Anyway, beautiful song.

  • Wow you're an asshole.

  • heavy means that she doesn't want to put all of what she thinks or says out in the open so soon that shes greaving or her lose.

  • the last part i didn't get... was he replying to her? and why did he not show up, or did he show and leave her? i like this (whatever it's called) but i need answers here god damn it!

  • well, in the song she says "sorry to be heavy but heavy is the cost" and shes insecure yes, maybe shes not physically perfect because she says "im not a film star beauty" and he didnt show up because he cant handle her emotional baggage..and no he wasnt replying to her..its an online dating thinger by the sounds of it.. and hes sayng what he wants again, plus no baggage.. its pretty simple..its a song about shallowness and insecurities

  • oooooh ok.... thanks for explaining....:))

  • It's actually a reply in the personals, I think. Personals as in the section in the newspaper-- it's an old style of "dating" but yeah.

I think the physical appearance was a factor in him leaving but also the emotional baggage, I don't like to assume it was b/c she was grieving that he left-- she warned him and he didn't even speak to her, so I think physical appearance outweighed that.

Or maybe I'm just cynical and believe most people are shallow?

  • there's a good explanation by gentlemendestroy on the comments page 2 months ago. check that out. I don't think it's a song about shallowness...

  • yh but i think the explanations was kind of similar... but i do agree after reading the other one that it's not about shallowness... thanks anyways...

  • i dont get it....so the girl is insecure, she was waiting for him to come meet her after and he doesnt show up?

    why didnt he?

    huh???

  • by "heavy" do they mean fat or are they referring to emotional baggage?

  • They mean emotional baggage, as in nothing heavy relationship-wise.

  • wow. i like this. it's different

  • whos this by?

    amazing song.

  • clearly by stars...

  • Comment removed

  • such a beautiful song!

  • I don't get the

    Is it you and me?

    and

    is it you or me?

    part

  • I think that the single male was trying to ask "are we meant to be together" when they sing "is it you and me?" and when they sing "is it you or me?" the male is asking if there's a problem with the female or himself; he knows that the relationship won't work out.

  • cause she's fat

  • Hahaha, maybe.

    "Nothing too heavy."

  • I think it's simply about one person wanted to be in a serious relationship while they other is too scared.

  • God this song is so personal to me.

Not the breaking up and finding someone else thing, But the whole letter sending thing. My boyfriends been in rehab (due to court orders, he not an addict) for four months now, we send letters back and forth to eachother and yeah thats not really what the songs about but it gets to me everytime I listen to this. :(

  • Yeah in it she says ''grieving over loss'', heavy emotions.

  • This song makes me glad I'm not single. I'd hate to be in the dating world again. So hard. I hope everyone finds someone to love.

  • What he sings first is a single announcement and then she answers with an e-mail or something and then they arrange a date and he did come but he went home as he saw her, because "she's not a beauty queen" and "heavy". Then she writes back why he didn't come and that she had seen him etc after a while he's got the same announcement again but he added "nothing too heavy", so you see how superficially people are.

  • That's not what this song is about, you need to look passed the 'superficial' bit of the song that people tend to go for upon listening to this. He puts out an ad, a very elusive one, and then Caroline responds in a very vulnerable manner, giving away three pieces of vital information. Her name, phone number, and how she's 'grieving over a loss'. Single M does show up to the St. Jude's club even after seeing her photo, so you know it's not her appearance that drives him away.
