Thank you for this journey back to childhood, where this and Muppet's Family Christmas were recorded on VHS tapes to watch again and again, just to be lost to age and static. Thank you for bringing it back.
I have seen this in all forms (original broadcast, repeated broadcasts, vhs, dvd and now youtube)since 1978 and have passed this tradition on by sharing Christmas Eve on Sesame St with the nieces, nephews, and other kids in my life. Great holiday special, just too bad PBS chooses not to re-air this classic anymore.
The keep Christmas with you song should have been famous enough to be a carol for the hollidays. Every one should start singing it just as much as jingle bells we wish you a merry Xmas and so on and so on.
@platinumrubies85 MIne too. They don't make them this good anymore. All we have are reruns, in some form or fashion. Thank goodness for ABC Family's 25 Days of Christmas.
@thomasraffiwiggles1 The reason I don't remember this was because when my parents recorded this, they cut off this part to leave room for The Simpsons Christmas Special
Thank you very much for posting this. I used to have this on VHS, like an official release for it, but my parents gave it away :,(. But luckily I was able to see it this Christmas thanks to you!
Thank you so much for uploading this part of my (and many others') childhoods. :) I have this recorded, but my VCR is broken, so I turned to YouTube for help to watch it this year!
I traditionally watch this movie every year for Christmas, but this is my first year watching it on Youtube. Thank you FebWriter for posting it. That very last scene makes me laugh everytime. Cookie Monster will eat anything, even if it's not edible! One time I I had a dream he did that to MY tree!
Thank you so very much for posting this. This was old when I started watching it (I was 2 the first time I saw it on TV, and by that time it was 6 years old), and even 24 years later this special still makes me laugh and feel all warm and fuzzy.
Thanks for posting this, I haven't seen it since 1980 (I was 6). Is this available on DVD? Great memories. Those were the good ol days! I live in Orland Park, IL, I noticed it said Urbana, IL. - MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Don't even start talking Elmo saves Christmas. The kids of today may adore him, but twenty-somethings like me stick to the Joe Raposo-Mr."Looper" Sesame Street days. I guess Elmo is loved, that's why the show is still on. BTW, someone post that moment where Big Bird accepts Hooper's death. I was only a baby, but the biggest moment ever in children's television.
I remember when Mr. "Looper" died. My whole family gathered on the couch to watch that special. I still get teary when I think about it. That was the first time someone in my life passed away.
I actually like "Elmo Saves Christmas"---I consider it the last gasp of what I think of as the "old" show, which lasted from 1969 to about 1998. Since '98, it's changed more in those 11 years than it did in all 29 before that combined.
It wasn't Elmo that made the difference between the "old" show and the modern one, it's that the format and general tone were altered. Elmo just happened to be the axis they chose to center that change around.
and altered in a bad way.. modern kid's shows are mindless and stupid. I can still watch this though. I am SO glad I grew up in the 80s before TV died
I hate that Elm took over Sesame Street and has like a 20 minutes part to himself that is so stupid and annying. and whathappened to all the good skits and songs they hardly ever show them anymore it's always Elmo or baby bear I can't stand him either
If Christmas Eve on Sesame Street aired today, during the credits it would read, "No Muppets were harmed in the filming of this show".
I loved when this show was on when I was a kid. We used to have it on beta and on Christmas eve we'd watch it and I'd get in trouble for laughing my head off while Cookie Monster belched through the closing credits.
This one should reair. The beauty of classic television is it's timeless. That's why TV Land always has such an extensive audience. Cookie Monster's next course should be a saguaro or ocotillo!
For those wondering, the sponsor cards that followed read as follows:
Major funding for this program was provided by a grant from the Office of Education, Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare and by Public Television Stations.
Additional support was provided by grants from the Ford Foundation and Carnegie Corporation of New York.
"Sesame Street" and the "Sesame Street" sign are trademarks and service marks of the Children's Television Workshop.
What amazes me is that those few sponsors were enough to keep that operation going at the rate of 130 hours a year for almost 30 years. Government funds, public broadcasting stations, Ford and Carnegie. That was it, more or less, for a long time.
But today, they have this big list of private sponsors--like McDonalds, Cheerios, Pfeizer, etc.--AND the CPB-----all to fund a much-reduced output of a measly 26 hours per year. More sponsors for less output. I don't get it.....
I got the record of this back in 1975, I wish the show had everything the record had. I found this show with a few others on DVD the other year so my kids can enjoy. Good post though.
Brought me back to when I was 4 years old but I called it "Special" Sesame Street lol for I never saw such a long episode...The music and the one liners make me feel like I'm watching it when I first did in 87' =)
I think they aired this every year through the 80's. My mother told me I saw it in '88 and '89 (I was born in '87), and they showed it at night then too, as they had originally.
They were showing this at least into the early '90s. (I remember seeing it in 1991)
I would guess that they kept on showing it until "Elmo Saves Christmas" came along in 1996. ("Elmo Saves Christmas" is actually pretty decent. Not as good as this one, but it's fun in its own way. And in my mind it was still from what I call "the old show".)
Many people watching the conclusion sing "Keep Christmas With You" in karaoke with the words on the screen. It can be so fun for kids to sing karaoke to that song.
I've been watching this every Christmas Eve since I was 6 years old and it's been a tradition and a ritual for me ever since. God almighty this brings back sooooo many memories during the holiday seasons.
I have this on a video. I'm guessing they re-aired it around 1987 or something because the rest of the specials on that same tape are from around then. I was born in '85 and I'm the oldest child in our family, so when this aired back in 78, my parents had no reason to watch/tape it. Anyways, we accidentally taped over the last 10 minutes of it and I'm VERY happy to see it on youtube! You just made my holidays 100x better :D Thanks!!!
I believe he refused to eat the branch part of the tree, to avoid the risk of getting heartburn. The pine was delicious to him, but he doesn't eat the branch.
Thank you for this journey back to childhood, where this and Muppet's Family Christmas were recorded on VHS tapes to watch again and again, just to be lost to age and static. Thank you for bringing it back.
