I'd also recommend keeping the game console in the family room so that parents can check what games are being played. Games shouldn't be babysitters. @adiblasi Actually, violent video games do the opposite of encourage kids to go out and commit crimes. When the original DOOM was released back in the mid 90s, violent crime went down DRAMATICALLY as a result. Kids should be encouraged to play more of these things.

Why does it have to be about violence? Why can't it be about how fun the game is or how the story is told? Or perhaps the puzzles and problem solving involved in the game? The fact is they're just games so why must a child play a really crappy one just cause those ones has a little bit of gore? What about movies? Instead of watching Forrest Gump I suppose you want them to watch Hello Kitty the movie or something.

@adiblasi Now I do agree with the fact that parents, buying their 10 year old kid, Dead Space, is not a great idea, I don't completely agree with all of this. For the fact that I'm 15, I own half these games, and they're just overall fun. Now for a maturity level, I don't think it should require age, but how what your maturity level is. Which I why I get upset when I play 9 year olds, on Gears of War 2. So play it, when you're MATURE enough, not old enough. and VIVA PINATA IS FREAKING EPIC!!! XD

When I was about 9-years-old, I was into GTA: Vice City (rated M). But did I go out and commit anything I experience in the gameplay? Absolutely not. Because I was smart enough not too, even at a young age...

if you're going to nit pick at the video game industry based on violence, crude language, and sex, then you might as well ban your child from experiencing any media form. the media industry produces extreme pieces of entertainment from time to time, but when you censor your child who is mature enough to play the game and will not take the message in a literal sense, then you are depriving them of adequate stress relief and having fun. (would you rather them do drugs or play video games?)
