Its probably because the strips differ in color MAINLY at those lines and if you observe closely all of them dont keep the same color evenly. They all have like different shades at each border.

Very cool, but even cooler BECAUSE I know the reason why this works.

The placement of the pencil fools brain into thinking it is only covering a small area of a continuous field - an area that should not show a demarcation between two different fields - and since all shades are perceived contextually (as in: compared to other image elements) by the brain, it assumes there is no difference between the two halves of the field - and therefore perceives it as such.

if focused on an imaginary line between the shades, without the pencil there that is, the shades are the same. When the pencil is placed, focus on either segment left or right of pencil and the shades are different using peripheral vision. try it

If you try it the way you mentioned, let me know how that goes for you. You obviously don't shoot video much if you think that you could adjust lighting that sensitively and that exact.

The thing most people probably wont consider is the fact that these illusions could be simple effects in a video-editing program.

@ForstaSvenskenIRymdn And your just to stupid to understand that this is not the work of editing. This is the result of our bad eyes. (aproximatly our eyes are 0.25 mega pixels, if you know anything about camera's etc you'll know how bad that is). So to fix a few problems there are special connections of the nerve cells in our eyes. As a result when 2 colours next to each other are not exactly the same some signals will be enhanced and others blocked, resulting in a higher contrast.
