the album art for this album is amazing. --------------------------I'm still analyzing it 10 years later and its still amazing. Egyptian symbology and their deities will fuck you up
Also don't forget Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Peter Frampton, just to name a few more. This poem goes a long way back. I believe it is back as far as the 16 or 1700's. Based on actual events. See, us metaliods know our stuff. We tell stories, sing about issues that we go through that people can relate to, include some classical music, know how history and so much more. We put our heart and soul into our music with passion. Not like this "noise" there putting out today. Thats my opinion anyway.
No doubt one of the best songs ever written. Amazing how 5 people can write a 14 minute song and actually prevent it from repeating the same stuff to much at once. As I always say, the artists of today are nothing compared to these guys!
I wouldn't classify Led Zeppelin as heavy metal, but they certainly laid the groundwork for what metal would become along with bands like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath.
I love this song;however, hearing the live version first ....I have to say it is twice as good!!!! All who have not heard this song live cannot even say they have heard the song at all...seriously go find the live version!!!
Actually if it weren't for Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Judas Priest you wouldn't really have metal at all, they are the founding fathers. And yes Iron maiden has inspired a lot of bands, and don't forget Eddy Van Halen and Randy Roads helped perfect hammer on's and pull off's, for our now guitarists.
But all in all, just enjoy this amazing song, Iron Maiden = Best story tellers ever, and if you don't agree Eddy will come and visit you.
First time I ever heard this song 9:15 blew my mind, I know how people like to put the starting and finishing times of the song in their comments which I agree with but that solo starting at that time is incindiary.
wow, now I kinda see what people mean when they say Fates Warning's - The Apparition is kinda similar....The beginning riff is, and even his voice. I love Bruce, but I almost love John Arch more...I just really love Fates.
After the classic poem, I knew this song! I was already a huge Maiden fan. and they helped me memorize the poem and get an "A" that a stoner-metalhead otherwise would not have!
@MsAlexz345 The poem's clearly better, I mean it's a super-famous masterpiece! This was really just a dedication to it, an allusion, a reference, whatever word you so choose. To say it ruined the poem is merely ignorant of you, it's a different perspective on the old poem. You shouldn't let a song influence you're opinion of such a "beautiful British Romantic poem;" to do so would be defeating the purpose of expression, art, and individuality. Now keep your thoughts to yourself and listen to it!
@MsAlexz345 yes, and to add on to what JJtheJetPlan3 said, the ambient instrumental with poetic interlude starting at 5:11 really seems to accurately reflect the atmosphere that Coleridge was trying to set. You should have been able to hear that yourself, that is, if you even gave the song the chance.
@MsAlexz345 Oh shut up, you haven't even read the poem obviously...The poem isn't a romance it is about an old man who has to go around & tell a story about how he killed an Albatross & his whole ship crew died...
@Lexia01 Actually, MsAlex is correct. She doesn't mean Romantic in the way we ignorant people think of it nowadays as being of love. The term Romantic decries emphasis of the common man, and Samuel Coleridge was of the Romantic period, along with others like Shelley, Wordsworth and Keats. Also, the poem may be shallowly thought of in that sense, but what the poem is really about is crippling loneliness. So yes, this is a Romantic poem. Look up the Romantic period sometime.
when i was assigned the original piece by coleridge in high school lit I was like "shit, they werent just pulling shit outta their ass, these dudes are literate" good ole fashioned metal.
Now if only they would make songs to explain more difficult pieces of literature. There'd be no need for Sparknotes XD
