I am not so sure whether I am for or against politicized messages in this contest. In some cases yes, in others not. But this song was such a great moment for ESC, from a great singer. Of course it was a touching issue for the Turkish people, who by the way I love. I am sure that if you knew the lyrics you would be definitely touched. ...Let's not forget something guys, more things unite us than separate us. Haunting and majestic... a song that reaches far beyond the events of 20th July 1974. This is a song for all divided nations. Mariza's vocal is terrific and sends a shiver down my spine and a tear down my cheek every time. Certainly one of the best Greek entries ever.

Μια γερμανίδα (από τον πατέρα της - ήταν στρατιώτης στην κατοχή ο οποίος εκτελέστηκε από τους ίδιους τους συμπατριώτες του το 1944, όταν γεννιόταν η Μαρίζα) που έγινε μέχρι το μεδούλι της ψυχής της Ελληνίδα!!! Πράγματι μαθαίνω εδώ για πρώτη φορά ότι είχε απειληεθί η ζωή της και πραγματικά την θαυμάζω ακόμη περισσότερο!!!

I am not so sure whether I am for or against politicized messages in this contest. In some cases yes, in others not. But this song was such a great moment for ESC, from a great singer. Of course it was a touching issue for the Turkish people, who by the way I love. I am sure that if you knew the lyrics you would be definitely touched. ...Let's not forget something guys, more things unite us than separate us. Haunting and majestic... a song that reaches far beyond the events of 20th July 1974. This is a song for all divided nations. Mariza's vocal is terrific and sends a shiver down my spine and a tear down my cheek every time. Certainly one of the best Greek entries ever.

Η μοναδική φορά που ο Μάνος Χατζιδάκης είχε αναλάβει την εποπτεία της ελληνικής συμμετοχής...Βγήκαμε 13οι στους 18 με το τραγούδι που η μουσική ανήκει στην Κωχ και οι στίχοι στον Μ.Φωτιάδη...Την προηγούμενη χρονιά δεν συμμετείχαμε ένεκα του Αττίλα,έπερνε για πρώτη φορά η Τουρκιά μέρος, και εκείνη την χρονιά στο Βέλγιο η Κωχ ανεβαίνει στην σκηνή με δική της ευθύνη...

Ανατρίχιασα. Αν λάβει κανείς υπόψη το timing, o,τι πιο συγκλονιστικό έχει ακουστεί από Ελληνικής πλευράς και όχι μόνο στή Eurovision (και πάλι όχι μόνον). Εμβληματικά όλα. και η μουσική, και ο στοίχος, και η ενορχήστρωση(!!!) και φυσικά το φωνητικό φαινόμενο Κώχ.

Είναι γνωστό οτι το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι αναφέρεται στη Μικρασιατική καταστροφή, μια ιστορία που πονάει δηλαδή. Η μετάδωση της Eurovision διακόπηκε στην Τουρκία ενώ ακουγόταν το τραγούδι.

To 1976 δεν ψήφιζε τοκοινό αλλά επιτροπή σε κάθε χώρα χωριστά. ΜΕτά ανακάλυψαν ότι άμα τον έκαναν τον διαγωνισμό ρηάλιτι θα έβγαζαν λεφτά. Επομένως δεν είπε αυτό η Κωχ.

The song was commisioned to Mariza Koch and Michalis Fotiadis (songwriter) by Manos Hadjidakis, who was then director of the Third Program of Greek Radio and Television (ERT). According to Koch, Hadjidakis told her that he wanted her to write a song about Cyprus and the Turkish invasion of the island. That was the result.

I remember, when I heard this song at the 1976 ESC, I thought it should win. But it didn't and somehow, it sank into (undeserved) obscurity, except, perhaps, in the Greek-speaking world.
I studied Ancient Greek at university, but it doesn't help me to understand the words of the song. I can still read Greek though. Can anyone translate it for me and let me have a copy of the words?
