That is interesting how Edison and Whitman worked in a project together. It brings much curiosity on how two great people can create new life changing things.
Im not suprised Whitman wanted to work with Edison on a project like this. The feeling i get from Whitman is that he had a very large intrest in expanding the literary world around him. It's very rewarding to really hear Whitmans voice, and feel for a moment the passionhe might have felt at theat time.
I really hope this is authentic! It is such a cool idea to think that these two great men in our history worked together. I think it is also interesting what Kristina said because it is not likely that a scientist and a writer would cross paths. - Gina Crowell
It never dawned on me that Thomas Edison and Walt Whitman were alive during the dame time period. I can get a better sense of what was going on at this time now that I know of Edison. It is amazing that only 4 lines of poetry could fit on the wax tube. This makes me think of how far technology has come.
It's intresing to hear a recording from over 100 years ago. I also think that it is cool Walt Whitman and Thomas Edison knew each other. They are both very famous and it is cool that Edison recorded Whitman. -Nicole Honegger
Its really surprising that the Tomas Edison and Walt Whitman worked together in 1891. The fact that Edison was a scientist and Whitman was a writer makes it really strange for these two to cross paths. Its amazing that the recording of Whitman (if it's actually him) has been preserved for so long. I also find it interesting that the poem America was chosen to be recorded because it foreshadowed the impact that these two men were going to have on American history.
It is so strange how two such important figures in history actually worked together on somthing. I had no idea that they had ever met and it is amazing how these things happen. It was also very cool to hear a recording of Whitman I really hope it was him on the recording becuase it gave the peom more life and meaning hearing it from the author himself.
It is crazy how two of the more important people in US history actually worked together, since they were doing very different things. It is vey cool, though, that we are able to listen to arguably the best American poet over a hundred years past his time.
i like your hair in this!!!!! Btw, it's amazing how such influential and famous names of history lived during the same time. But I guess it shows that amazing people are always going to be on this Earth, so its not that much of a coincidence that some will be in the same era.
i like your hair in this!!!!! Btw, it's amazing how such influential and famous names of history lived during the same time. But I guess it shows that amazing people are always going to be on this Earth, so its not that much of a coincidence that some will be in the same era.
I find it amazing how over a hundred years ago we can hear one of the most recognized poets read his own poem. And all thanks to a brilliant famous american scientist, working together with a very famous writer. Incredible technology meets classic literature. This is really cool.
I would have never guessed that one of the greatest inventors actually worked with one of the greatest poets in America. Even though I was fascinated with Whitman's recital, I was really amazed at Edison's phonograph. It was cool hearing a poet who lived more than hundred years ago reciting his poem.
I think its amazing how 2 very influential yet very different people in American history came together to do this. We always here about famous American inventors in history class and famous American writers in English, and how they are alive at the same times, but never how their lives intertwined.
John Herrmann, Pd. 8: I thought that it was very cool how Edison and Whitman worked together on things. I also thought that the way it was read in the recording is the way Whitman intended it to be read. Good video!
I would have never expected that Whitman and Edison worked together. Its also very interesting that Whitman was able to work with such an amazing inventor that that their work together was question, because it was so good, compared to all the other recordings during that time.
I think its really interesting that Edison and Whitman worked together because I would have never expected that. Also, I think if there is an authentic recording of Whitman then that is really cool that Edison was able to invent something to get such a good quality recording for that time period.
I think that it was pretty cool how Edison and Whitman worked together, and how they were connected. I also think that "America" is a great poem. The way Whitman read it showed how much he meant the words he had written.
It is very interesting how Edison and Whitman were connected and worked together. Edison could be responsible for promoting Whitman's work. Lastly, I appreciate the short and meaningful words of "America"
Whitman's reading of the poem "America" does serve to give the poem a certain emotion and meaning that can only be imbued by the author, not simply silently reading the text to one's self. The manner in which Whitman reads the poem seems to, like the poem's lines, celebrate the character of American youth. However, it is unfortunate that two of Whitman's lines were cut off in the recording, especially because their omission slightly alters the meaning of the poem.
I thought it was cool that such a famous guy in America's history used one of his inventions to record Walt Whitman. It shows how people respected his poems.
Mr.Porter I see you have ads in your video. Now you can make mad bank off of this, I think you get like 3 cents for every person that clicks this ad. Also in the reading on pg 98(i thnk) one of whitman's stanzas proves that he was gay.
I LOVE this video. Whoever clicked dislike has to be kicked in the pants! I was watching this tonight, and again coming back to your intro to Whitman. I love your enthusiasm, and I know Walt would have been pleased as well. I have that recording as part of a collection and was recently listening to it to get a feel for how he would read his own stuff (I am planning a "Song of Myself" project), and I love getting all the background on this. Excellent work here!
so i liked reading Whitman's poems outloud like he did. i feel that it helps me connect to the message he was trying to convey or just get into the poem. i think it's really cool that he got to be recorded on a wax cylinder type object. i wouldn't even know how that's possible and that's really interesting. I like how Whitman read his poetry in his final recording. It sounded very meaningful and leaves that impression on you which simple but strong words.
I had no idea that Edison and Whitman had any relation at all! I'm glad that Edison had the chance to record Whitman's poetry. It's great that he got to do this before he died, especially because he really wanted to!
Even though he was very old and not in the best health when he recorded this, its nice that he got the chance to record because you said he liked reading his poems aloud, so this is a step up!
having it end with the word love is kinda nice too!
A good, inspiring video! Thank you for going to the source here, and for all the information you provided. Well done. I have heard this recording many times and really want to think it is Walt himself. I love the verve he puts into it, witnessed especially on the word "ample." He really nails it. It FEELS like Whitman's delivery, doesn't it? Thanks again.
@Traylorjim I'm with you. The idea of Whitman & Edison getting together to record is just so cool to me -- I want to believe it's an authentic recording too.
@mnolanporter I am working on a blogpiece about the recording. I am astonished that all the negative comments and standard view that it is a fake or a hoax seems to come from one essay written by one guy back when the whole thing surfaced, in 1992. I think this is unfair. And I am not convinced by that fellow's comments, either.
It's intriguing to see how Edison and Whitman had once worked together and the influences they had on each other. The coolest part is how different these two men are and in seeing the contrast between them, it makes it that much more interesting to watch this recording.
The connection between Whitman and Edison is really interesting because you would never think that they would would even associate with each other. Also, the recording sounds fake and i dont beleive it is real. Does the light bulb turn on?
I thought it was really interesting that Edison and Whitman were around during the same time period and that they actually worked together to accomplish his recording. Its good to make that connection so you know what else was going on during Whitman's time and its a better realization to when he was around. Its also interesting to see how the technology has changed so much.
Its really cool how Edison and Whitman are connected. I makes me realize how long ago Whitman's time really was. Its also funny to see how much technology has changed.
It's unfortunate that they ran out of room during the recording because it would have been cool to get all of it. Even though they question the authenticity, I would like to believe it is real because it's cool that two people who are so famous knew of each other and obviously respected each other. The recording is also good quality.
It was really cool that Edison recorded Whitman, and that both these men were so famous. Also, it is interesting how people would say that it is not authentic and that the sound is too good. I'm really surprised that these men worked together because I would never relate them,
It's interesting to see the link between Edison and Whitman and how much information and experiences they shared together. It was recorded a really long time ago yet is still so popular. I also thought it was interesting how the last word ended with love.

I thought the music in the background was very creative because Edison, NJ was the birthplace of recorded sound. I also thought the thomas Edison Memorial Tower was really cool because the top of the tower is shaped like a lightbulb, one of Edison's famous inventions.
That's so cool that Edison recorded Whitman! It's really interesting, and the recording did actually sound pretty good for something of that time period.
