Not going to lie, this is pretty mediocre and I'm glad it didn't get onto Images and Words. This sounds like any generic, almost boring track from Awake.
@OneTakeJesus Not trolling man. Don't you think it's really boring compared to the rest of Images and Words? However I'm starting to like Awake more now, so I take that bit back.
@Acidwrath You don't come to a video with nothing good to say about it like you did and say it's not trolling. This is definitely not boring to me in anyway at all. This track isn't even on Images and Words so I wouldn't compare them to each other like that.
@OneTakeJesus Trolling is arguing a logical fallacy for the purpose of winding someone up, are you sure you're not trolling me? I'm saying it's pretty boring, it has nothing special going on (see Miracle and the Sleeper 4:16 - 4:41 etc) and it was MEANT to be on Images and Words, so it should be compared thusly. And i'm not trolling, i'm voicing an opinion.
There's no doubt that their lyrics (and even music I dare say) had more of a philosophical approach back then. Not that their more recent albums are any bad; everything they've ever done I find beyond amazing. :D
i actually think it has more to do with jordan. fabulous player though he is, since he joined the band's music has become increasingly technical, often to the exclusion of melodic/harmonic ideas. kevin moore never seemed unsatisfied riffing chords in the background, and this often acted to fill out the higher range while jp and jm covered the mid and low ranges, respectively. jordan seems to always double jp's part, which ultimately reduces harmonic depth and can muddy the mix.
yeah well....yeah and no...dt older stuff was very melodical....and like that...but i also like theyr new stuff...they changed a bit ever since systematic...but they have the same essence....as for porntoy it dies suck ....but on th other hand i cant wait to see what's going to happen :)
the older stuff was way better, i blame roadrunner when they signed with them they went more on the metal side less melodic, and now that portnoys gone who knows what to expect from them
the whole thing with the way they sound now is the fact that they signed to roadrunner so there gonna go heavier and less melodic. evey album is great but im a scenes from a memory and earlier fan
why isn't this song in any discography? and btw... wouldn't you listen to the part which begins at 1:27 forever? It's the kind of music I would like to have in my dreams as the backing track :) heavenly melody!
@KazeReload It's not on any Studio Album release however I believe this song is on their Compilation Album "Dream Theater's Biggest Hit... and 21 other pretty cool songs"
Does anybody notice the resemblance of this song and Lifting Shadows of a Dream?
They're even the same key!
And the funniest thing, on the Greatest Hit And 21 Other Pretty Cool Songs album, they put those two songs side by side, like they wanted us to notice the similarity intentionally. :)
my apologies, hahah. I just meant (and this is based on MY OPINIONS ONLY!!! ;P) that I thought what Steven Wilson said related to my feelings towards Dream Theater nowadays.. that they write some complex solos and long songs for the sake of writing a complex song ;P
No offense, but I honestly think it would sound crap if they did it today. As much as I LOVE Dream Theater, they just don't have the same musical feel as they used to. I watched a watched an interview with Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree yesterday, and nowadays DT actually seems like one of those bands who writes songs for the sake of complexity. Even though my favorite album is Six Degrees, I'd rather see them going all the way back to the beginning. But time does apparently not HEAL all things
I think DT is still awesome (BC&SL was imo the best album they've released in the 21st century), but they used to make better music. One thing about your comment kinda puzzles me, why mention the review with the guy from Porcupine Tree? It didn't seem to relate to anything and seemed really off-topic..
I'd disagree. Their songs are not more complex than they used to be - in fact, looking at songs like "These Walls" or "Forsaken," it would seem they've gotten less complex. Dream Theater has simply evolved their sound into something less keyboard based 80's hair metal type of sound into a more modern, darker, heavier metal type of sound. Sure the feel of the songs are different, but I don't want Dream Theater to put out Images and Words 10 times over. I'm glad they've kept their sound fresh.
I know.. Mark my words, I did like Black Clouds and Silver Linings a lot, I just don't think that either that one, nor Systematic Chaos or anything from around that time is nearly as musically inspiring as this is :P
@Pellefaren I don't really know about that... The Dance of Eternity is probably the most technical song they've written. The time signatures jump around more than any other song, it's largely outside of any scale... At least Black Clouds & Silver Linings isn't all that technical. Systematic Chaos is quite technical, but still not very technical when compared to the real technical stuff. Petrucci was even asked about this in an interview and he said that the technicality just comes naturally.
my all time dt song its just so stunning for its length. i apreciate all the uploads you do man must cost you a lot of money for all the bootlegs they seem pretty rare
Although I agree with you, that the older stuff is better. I love James vocals on the old stuff too!
But I don't think DT has put any less effort into writting songs. Their tastes have changed as they PROGress, and they act upon the music they hear in their heads and not what we want.
sorry buddy but images and words and awake had a LOT more thought behind them than octavarium did. as much as i love the song octavarium the rest of them are boring especially how everyone thinks panic attack is this amazing song just because of rock band.
to me panic attack cant compete with learning to live OR lifting shadows off a dream!
no reasoooOOooOOOOn, no Reasooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooon! to live forever ;o me moje, grande DT! :)

Hehehe, I'm actually surprised you didn't get many thumbs down for that comment. :)
Just expressing your thoughts in a comment which doesn't contain the words "Dream Theater r GODS!" shouldn't get you any thumbs up on DT videos. :)
Anyways, I think exactly like you.
I think their sound has changed with time and the keyboard players. :)
The newer albums just don't have that something that, ie "To Live Forever" had...
Well, they're at least still making music, we can still expect something. :)
