this is amazing, so good. what the fuck happened to thrice? vheissu was good, the alchemy index was amazing, beggars was OK but major/minor was like the worst shit ever.
After all of the time I have been listening to Thrice, I never gave this song a full play through. Wow, I like it! Well, of course I'd like it ... it's Thrice.
Personally this is probably one of my favourite songs, as a norwegian I've learned as a little child that you shall respect the ocean, and if you think you are a "master of the sea" you won't survive very long.
I love the mysterious and haunting tone in Dustin's voice, I honestly can't describe the feeling I get while listening to this, it's both relaxing and dreadful at the same time, and I love it.
@olivemitten Child of Dust- we spend our lives apart from God, and when we die we return to our mother, and the "dirt" we were made from (each human being made in God's image)
Whether intended or not, this is just beautiful symbolism. I love this band and this album.
@xblindx & @chelseaortego08 Given the last two verses, and given their latest album (Major/Minor), it seems like Dustin is using the seas perspective as an analogy to God's perspective. We are a prideful and that think we rule it all but God does things to humble us to hopefully bring us to the realization that he is the master. The last lines about how grace is still found during a seemingly tough time and the mention of fear and reverence makes me think this is God's perspective.
@kocin87 The musical message aside: God does not "rule" us. It is not our master. It is us. It humbles us as we humble ourselves. It is not the man up in the sky. We think we control it, like we think we control ourselves, like we think we control nature, but we don't. :)
@MyrridinMhmm well personally i think its all a matter of opinion :P i mean some people think that God rules over everything we do and that he is our master. others feel he just watches over us and so on.
anyway i think im just gonna enjoy the song now :)
i've been listening to this album for a very long time. and i was just laying here, falling asleep as i am sure most of us have done, or do with this master art. and for the first time in my life the opening with the clanking and such reminded me of silent hill . . maybe it's just b/c i am obsessed with that movie, idk. just couldn't help wondering if i am the only that suddenly thought that. hehe. . probably just me . . :P or half asleep. . :)
This song is amazing. When i first heard it, i thought of a woman(element of water) holding a globe of water(the ocean) with a ship in it. Then slowly, slowly, crushing it.
It's so perfectly written.. The world is not ours.. we just live here.. the elements of nature have so much power, there has to be tragedy to keep us in check..
I listen to this song and sink deeper into my chair thinking of all my mistakes I've made..Then the ending lyrics play and I'm picked up higher then I was before.
i think its saying that since the "kings upon the main" had so much pride and no caution, they were torn down. But if you do have caution and are ready for anything, then youll make it through. To me it seems like the ocean thinks the kings are trying to challenge it, or show that they're better.
"But grace can still be found within the gale" I believe its saying that You can still see beauty in the turmoil of life. "With fear and reverence raise your ragged sail" In this part i feel that it is meaning that take the lessons learned in life, hence fear and reverance, and raise your ragged sail, because everyone has had some sort of challenges in their life.
The last song for Each element is in the form of a sonnet... a writing form for poetry. The most famous person to use this form of poetry writing is Shakespear! These guys are inteligent, and the music is much much more deep than just the outlying appearance.
the lines"When kings upon the main have clung to pride And held themselves as masters of the sea I've held them down beneath the crushing tide Till they have learned that no one masters me" explains what the sea believes.
@chelseaortego08, it also alludes to Poseidon from the Odyssey. Odysseus was a king and his hubris caused him to remain shipwrecked for like 10 or 20 years (been awhile since I read it).
@Apolyonnn The Trojan War was 10 years, he didn't get back home for 20. He was shipwrecked for a part of those 10 years between Troy and his home. I think...
I don't want to read into the song too much, but one thing I will say is that it's a magnificently beautiful song.
I could listen to it forever. Thrice are actually suck an awesome band, it's unreal. it's when a band can do this and also have really heavy songs like The Arsonist and Firebreather. Thats when you know that they are something special.
These guys behind Deftones are my favorite band of all time :D
haha I thought that was semi-ironic that you had "suck" in your sentence about how aweosome they are. You like the deftones too? we have similar taste. Thrice and Deftones are two of my personal favorites. Try Minus The Bear.
I remember when White Pony came out and I thought 'Jesus, this really is the bees' knees.' I figured nobody would be able to nail that sound again until I heard Thrice's 'Vheissu', and they've just kept on delivering since (and before, of course!)
Don't mean to rag on them at all, but haven't Deftones gone a bit off the boil these days? I loved their first three albums but they seem to have gone a bit hit and miss, mainly miss...
To me, this song is told from the perspective of the sea, and its message is that humans should not underestimate nature and the oceans in particular. It may be a message for humans to do as they do, but not to disrespect the sea by claiming mastery of it. It may have some religious component. I can't say, I'm not well versed in the bible, but it feels like the sea warns us that we have become too vain.
if you listen to the last 2 lines it says "with fear and reverence , eaise your ragged sail", probably meaning that the sea welcomes those who have respect for it, and that you will be safe, as long as you fear and respect the sea.
anyone else think this song has almost nothing to do with water, lyrically, in a good way? It's almost perfectly done, as well.
The second verse is a huge example (the titanic) of the third passage, which states that you shouldn't walk this world thinking your the shit (pride), and you can be overwhelmed at any time. But then the ending comes in and tells you that "grace can still be found within the gale" of life, so "with fear and reverence" you should "raise your ragged sail" and live life.
i think the same thing but since the lead singer is Christian (correct me if im wrong) he is talking how no one is equal or greater than god and that he controls everything and u should fear him and have grace.
or it is possible that the lyrics are referring to Poseidon: the Norse god of the sea
The singer is christian, and I do believe the majority of the songs have that kind of influence, but the ending of this song basically says "keep doing your thing". If the lines were supposed to mean "don't underestimate god", then the ending lines would be saying "live your life, just don't underestimate god". Well... that makes sense too. In the end, it all comes down to those last 2 lines, and they have to do with life more than any other subject the previous lines talked about.
My interpretation of the last two lines, you may take it or leave it.
The gale is from God because we have pride in ourselves, a pride that leads us away from God. But, God still gives grace. Grace means favor that we don't deserve, and in this song we are undeserving because we're prideful like the kings mentioned in verse 3.
We can raise our ragged sail because God forgives us of this pride. We then continue in life seeking to rid ourselves of that pride.
the only way they really can be big is to cater to the masses. unfortunatly the masses aren't looking for unique, thought-provoking music it seems. lovely stuff :>
thrice is the shit. no matter what they do. and for those who hate the water side of the alchemy index, jump off a bridge. Both sides rock and are perfect oppossites to each other. Thrice is not just a band, they're true ARTISTS. Thrice for life!
go to hell DROBOO!!! fuck you just cuz u dont like it doesnt mean u have to tell peeople keep it to ur self besides it doesnt matter if they are popular atleast they have fans and u would be shocked if u saw how many fans they have!!!!!!
why do these stupid people want thrice to go back to what made them "popular"..some of you idiots dont like thrice because they changed but if they stayed on the same road they wouldve been on MTV everyday and then you wouldve called them sellouts so go listen to your fallout boy because you obviously cant appreciate art

thrice needs to go back to when they actually were a rock band who alot of people liked and get rid of this shit. this is not what made them popular, songs like the artist in the ambulance and stare at the sun were the type of songs that helped build up their popularity but this new stuff is just boring
I'm certain they care more about their music then their popularity. Bands that make the same shit over and over are bands that don't succeed in the long run.

Holy shit!
Looking at these songs as being from God's point of view, they mean something different entirely.
The Flame Deluge- the way we use God as our excuse for all sorts of violence and terrible acts, like the Crusades or other, more mundane things.
Kings Upon the Main- that God is in charge, and hopefully we can be humbled enough to see it
Silver Wings- God does so much for us, and most of the time all we do is curse him, instead of seeing his love
