I hear Skating by George Winston in the background! :D
Great tutorial by the way, my dad has been trying to explain how silk screening works and seeing the video rather than just hearing the words really helped clear things up for me. :)
Hello, Brilliant video very helpful... I am having such trouble with getting ink to pass through my screen... I have exposed correctly, but not sure if I am washing it away right. It is a detailed image so do not want to scrub too hard - any advice on trouble shooting getting ink through stencils better? Cheers. x
@samcorbing You need that plexi-glass to put pressure against the photo paper and the transparency paper. You want a tight squeeze or the image might not "Burn" right.
Fantastic tutorial! Thanks...Just did our first screen and it couldn't have been easier. It's drying now and then off to print. Thanks again for the great video.
Some amazing home techniques are here on YouTube. Very cool. Check out my how to videos on screen printing. I explain a more commercial process to print shirts but it teaches about how it is done to make money.
Drying my design on the white screen leaves squares which transfer onto my t-shirt. What can I do about this? Very frustrating, not to mention expensive(I messed 3 sheets up so far). Can you help me maddstickers?
i also dry my stuff on the white thing with the squares. it also leaves marks on my photoez. so wat i do is every 5 minutes for 15 minutes i keep flipping it and drying each side. after that i would put it on a dry cloth like a shirt and let it dry for another hour or so just to make sure it last me a long time. :) add me and i can send you a couple of my shirt designs
Wash your screen, they take a towel, place the screen on the towel, fold the towel over like a claim shell to dry the screen or just use paper towels to place on top and put pressure to dry. You never want to dry the screens with the glossy side facing down when they are wet, that why you are having problems it seems.
Doing some test using a light box with this paper, when washing out i still have a slight film where its 'clear', do i need to just wash out longer, or with a stronger spray maybe?
it is a uv light box made for silk screen, i just don't think its rinsing all the way out, will try a few things. Thanks for your input mad, i had the same problem with outdoor light when i 1st tried it. its like a clear, but not see through, so its got a lite emulation still in it. Thanks again for replying.
Actually I just found this on the website under 'how to projects':
Temperature does not matter; however, summer months may take less time to expose than winter months. Exposure time may vary per location, time of day, etc.
Be sure to test exposure time with the small test pieces that comes with every PhotoEZ pack.
When you buy the kit, it has instructions printed out. Then just go over this video before you do it. If you don't have the kit and just this video, you will get confused.
What I do is just turn off the lights in the kitchen to do the set up before I go out side. Inside lights won't kill the paper, direct sunlight or very strong indoor light will expose the paper.
I feel an explanation of the 3rd step is necessary. Do you tape the paper (or film) screen to a frame to do the actual printing? Can you use the plastic frames used with thermofax screens? If you use a squeegee and only the paper, how do you keep the paint or ink from accidentally getting on the fabric?
I only the the screen you make to do the printing, no frame is needed but could be used if you have the know how. To keep the ink from the fabric you must have nerves of steel.
Awesome. I was really hesitant about using emulsion because it looked really messy, but this looks a look clean and easy. I have a feeling that it's going to be more expensive than emulsion, but I am definitely going to be getting this.
The traditional way of screen printing is the best if you can afford it and have the space. This kit is for the average person who wants to do a couple of custom prints with no mess.
can you tell me the materials you used in making the scree...im dying to know especially the green one...please please tell me...and can i ask if the transparency paper you used is also the acetate paper?please answer me...thank for the answer in advance
no. depending on what kind of image that you want to print(and the desired quality or effect.) it's an interesting experiment to place found objects on the screen, just to see what kind of image with which you are left. one can also draw directly onto film or transparent "drafting vellum" with the appropriate ink(i usually use koh-i-noor or rapidograph ink for film on both.)
No, because it is exposed using the sun's UV light. Indoor lights don't have UV rays, because it'll blind you. You can do a search online about Screen Exposure Units, and find plans on how to build your own using unfiltered blacklights, or metal halid or halogen lamps.
UV still comes through clouds, it will just increase your exposure time. Also, You could take it to a tanning bed/tanning salon - they all produce UV and most will let you pay per session. Who cares if you're using it to expose film instead of to get a tan - as long as they get their money and you don't damage anything you won't have any problem doing it that way.

which photo film did you use?
the regular or high def?
gweeto052 1 year ago
@gweeto052 I use both, but I prefer the Regular because the high def squares are so small some times you need to thin out the paint.

after i let it soak for 15 min it all rinsed off even though there was a ghost image. does that mean it was under or over exposed?

That means either you (A) over exposed the whole sheet or (B) you were sold old bad paper.

I suggest sunlight only. Or use very small test strips not to waste a bunch of paper. Sorry I can't help more, Ive never used indoor light.
