It's sad to think that after this goal, he would only score 92 more before he retired over 5 years later. That's the same number he scored in the 1981-82 season alone!
He was a dominating goal scorer in the NHL he played. It's a different NHL now and players will need to dominate in other ways. Today they are bigger, faster, stronger & better trained. The learning resources today compared to 20 or 30 years ago can't even be compared. That said, 5 goals in one game to cap off 50 goals in 39 games is still ridiculous!
As a kid I hatede Wayne cause he was just so damn good, but in the end once I got a bit more mature I have to admit that he was the best player to play the game during my time. However though even with all Gretzky's incredible accomplishments I think Bobby Orr is the best of all time. You will NEVER see a guy be the best defenseman while lead the league in scoring. TWICE! To put this in perspective no one in almost 15 years has hit Orr's 139 pts. in a season. A season where he won the Norris!
@TNO73 Most people don't know that Bobby Orr scored more points relative to other defensemen in his best seasons in his era than Wayne did compared to other forwards. Wayne was the greatest forward to ever play the game, but Orr was the best defenseman. Hard to compare apples and oranges. Having said that, Gordie Howe was in the top 5 in scoring for 20 consecutive years. It's hard to imagine anyone will ever have that great a combination of skill and durability again.
yup, I think we know who won this trade, should've stayed in edmonton gretzky, would've won twice as many stanley cups, stats would've been pushing 4000, and his legacy would be that much untouched.
thanks alot for growing the game in southern u.s.a you fucking jerk, giving those red sun kissed bastards a chance in hockey, that pisses me the fuck off.
@evanderlazer How about you shut your whore mouth. You know jack shit. Wayne was traded he sure as hell didn't want to leave the Oilers. You need to go back and read up a little bit on your Oilers history before you come on here talking shit about the greatest hockey player ever. Fucking asshole.
before Mario retired he was averaging 2.0 pts per game to Gretzky's 1.92 pts per game. comin out of retirement helped his overall points.. but hurt his average.. they're both great players, Wayne had better teams to do it with then Mario but whoeevr is starting an NHL team.. who would they pick first.. prolly Wayne!! Even tho i like Mario more, i think Wayne would win that draft... lol
Continued...Anyone who wants to test that theory out...go to a hospital, look for a cancer patient that goes through chemo, has also back problems and was operated on (like Mario) and see if they can go sit at their work desk. Then compare that to Mario's career and Wayne's and see which one is special. That's all I'm saying...no offence.
Who says the game is about records, did Wayne save a franchize like Mario did? Not one bit, did Wayne have the same back problems and had to battle cancer like Mario did? Not one bit, infact Mario had a complete game than Wayne, it's just he wasn't healthy enough cause he didn't have an enforcer for a large part in his career. That pretty much explains it.
@MrRob7004 Oh so you mean the Kings didn't exist until he came to sunny Cal? We know of their history before he was traded there. I lived in Cali for 10 years and I can tell you I didn't see a rink for miles while he played there. Never even saw anyone play street or roller hockey and I lived close to L.A.

Wow they r so much better and make tons more than the jets ever did... *major fucking sarcasim* HOCKEY DOES NOT BELONG IN THE DESERT!
@hockeycentral...no major injuries you say? Cuz him missing half a season to a back injury that slowed him down big time is nothing. Plus I guess playing with osteoperosis is nothing big either right lol. Do your research before you make comments.
Bobby Orr is the greatest hockey player ever. He doesn't have the records that Wayne does. But neither would Wayne if he retired when he was 30.
And factor in that Orr had many problem with his knees near the end. So REALLY he was only healthy for maybe 5-6 seasons. To be able to do what he did as a defenseman. What Gretzky did doesn't even compare.
Gretzky's one of the greatest. But not as good as Bobby.
If Gretzky retired when he was 30, the only record he wouldn't have is the career goals which he broke at 33. He broke the points record at only 28, and he already had all the seasons records (goals, assists and points) since his 3rd season at only 21.
And having health problems should not make you greater, it's the opposite, why penalize Gretzky because he was healthy and dominant for 20 years.
@Irato99 Health problems don't make Bobby Orr great. Winning 2 Art Rosses as a d-man made him great. Leading the league in scoring as a d-man made him great.
I mean we could go round and round. #99 and #4 are the greatest. But the only thing you have to look at is #99 got to play through the prime of his career. #4 had to retire when his prime should have been peaking.
And those HEALTH problems were result of knee injuries from playing physical. something Gretzky never did.
Would you rather have on the ice? 5 Waynes? Or 5 Bobbys?
I'm sorry but 5 Bobby's would win that match-up any day of the week if they were to face off. Bobby is tougher. Better defensively. Yet he could skate just as well if not BETTER than Wayne. We can assume that both Wayne and Bobby are EVEN in the offensive categories.
Are you saying that both Wayne and Bobby are EVEN in the offensive categories? Come on, Orr wasn't even the best offensive player on his team.
And you're wrong about the prime comment, Orr had to retire before his prime ended, while Gretzky had to play past his prime and with bad teams, and he still dominated. Orr never played past his prime and never played with a bad team.
@Irato99 If you are referring to Phil Esposito than you're wrong. Phil was nowhere near as good offensively as Bobby. Espo stood in the slot because he was big and he could take a beating for rebounds and backdoor passes.
I'm saying for Orr's AGE it should have been his prime. He started having knee injuries in his mid-20's. Gretzky never had a major injury in his whole career because he had guys looking out for him.
When Bobby played he didn't have that. Guys were running at his knees.
We were there for 802!! We sat in the nose bleed seats center ice, and the goal was to the left of us. I snapped a pic just as he shot it!! U can see Luke Robitaille falling backwards in my pic as the puck goes in.
And McSorley got the primary assist...if his career didn't end the way it did, McSorley would be better remembered as why Gretzky had such a long career.
Mario said he didn't realize what it took to win until he played with Gretzky in the Canada Cup.

So many what ifs when it comes time to Lemieux. But you know what, who cares? When you look in the record books, it's Wayne's name splattered all over it, not Lemieux's.
What is it with youtube and it's members. People seem to come here to watch videos and get stupid arguments over stuff. If you're so against someone, why watch there videos?
@kimball99 Well. Considering Mario was still scoring a point per game in his last season. And IF he could've played around 200-250 games more, he would be the all time goal scorer. 690 goals in 915 games, Mario lost about half his career to injuries and still managed to dominate the game in any era he played.
@hockeyguy1394 And the funny part about Mario speaking about his last season. "I couldn't play in the level i used to play" And he was 23 games and 24 points :D So that shows how good he really was :)
Unfortunately, "few" is the operative phrase. Mario's got about seven plays on an endless loop. Or, we could allow assists to enter the equation, where Wayne's were frequently astonishing, skipping over sticks and appendages to land flat before the stick of some attacking teammate, while Mario's were shovel or drop passes. Mario's allowed as much: Wayne was the better passer by a wide margin. But I digress. Let's talk goals: Bossy then...Ovechkin now. Mario's simply not the best.
If I keep doing math I'll end up going blind with Wayne's 61 NHL records. Actually: 62 - the record for having the most records. He is the most statistically dominant athlete in sports history. One of his skills, if you will, was a supernatural ability to recover from whatever abuse his body took, and stay healthy enough to create for 1,487 games. Look, you and I will never agree on this. That's cool. 99 and 66 respected each other. At least we haven't devolved into name-calling. Points for us.
I don't know if you follow other sports but Jerry Rice of the NFL is just like Wayne as far as NFL records and carrer stats but there were other receivers who were just as talented that played with lesser QBs no where near as good as Young and Montana and weren't blessed with the good health yar in and year out that Rice had.
Wayne did play many years with the best team where as Mario played many yars with the worst ever.
As this clip states: "When it comes to excellence sustained over a career, one man stands above all others." It's a grey area when we try to compare skills because context is everything. Orr benefitted from an NHL that had just doubled in teams; 99 and 66 did from a flowing game that rewarded freelancing. In 66's first six seasons he played one playoff; WG only two in his last six. Mario got a lot of ice time on those teams; Wayne's drop-off in a trap era was exacerbated by his poor teams.
But we definitely agree on health. Trust me: as a sports fan whose two favourite athletes are Mike Bossy and Dave Stieb, I've grumbled while lesser players passed them by because they were able to play for 20 years. Mario would've had a lot more points, for sure. Probably end up at #2 in everything, unless Bossy had been able to play 16-18 years and score another 300 goals. That's why sports is so compelling. There are tons of factors...and almost as many viewpoints.
Your percentage stats are ridiculous. Mario played 100% of his own capabilities, which were not as good as Gretzky and that's why he's not considered the best ever, Gretzky is...
They were far from their peak yet but Lemieux's Capabilities that you stress were less than they would would be if he was physically 100 %.
Wayne at 100% began to be challenged by a 75 % Mario according to doctors.
Consider tha in the 915 games of a potential 1428 was never 100 % according to Doctors and even Coffey said Mario was the best he ever played with and Orr said best ever.
I guess you are saying Coffey/Orr don't know anything
If you can't play 100% in the NHL, go play golf... Gretzky was a real athlete, real dedication and always gave 100%, that's why he's by far the greatest player ever...
Mario played as well as he could considering his limitations with his back problems, poast back surgery blood anema fatigue, Cancer fatique, Kemo fatique, but Wayne was for the most part always 100% helathy and mario still matches or betters his averges for pts and goals per game.
I think it's you who's missing the point. You are as good as you are on the ice and excuses are for losers. And Mario's career averages are irrelevant because they would've dropped if he played as much as Gretzky.
Beingout of the game as long as mario makes you rusty not rested and Marios size made gus drape all over him and get away with hooks becasue he was so big they wouldn't call it as often as on a smaller guy.
How many more time can you repeat the same old lies?
Orr and Coffey said Mario was the most talented, that doesn't make you the best.
Your percentage excuse is meaningless, you seem to think that Mario is the only player ever not playing 100% all the time. Just stop mentioning this, try to find real facts please.
And please, being injured a lot doesn't make you a better player, just like a car always broken doesn't make it a better car, even if it performs well the few times it's on the road.
Health and durability are criterias required for greatness as important as skills for an athlete. Gretzky had the ability to beat all the records and keep them and that's these accomplishments that define true greatness.
Wayne gretzky played his whole career, if you remove the "older" years of which Mario didn't play, you'll see that Gretzky average is much higher. In any case, final pt per game average is higher for gretzky
Worst team ever? :D I''l tell you thing: there was NO hockey in LA before Gretzky.
And really, excuses are for losers. You can say similar about anyone. And imagine, if superman would have played in NHL! But sorry, there are facts, which you can't argue with. And you don't become the best just for potential.
I remember watching this game when I was 10. Great freaking moment. That Kings team that lost in the Finals is still my all time favorite sports team.
There is no question that Lemieux woudl've broken some of the records but if you're talking about "he said/she said" Lemieux himself said Gretzky was the best.
I would never make a case for Lemiux had he missed most of his games past his prime.
The thing is he missed the bulk of them in his 20's and early 30's.
I wasn't even basing his "Could have Been" stats on his prime averages, just his acarrer averages.
Mario was being diplomatic, Coffey won cups with Wayne and Mario and said Mario is the best he ever played with, and Bobby Or said Mario was the best he had ever seen.
Many hockey experts that wayne was not as talented as Mario.
Paul Cofey won cups with both of them and said mario was the best he ahd ever played with.
that's coming from a Hall of Fame who reached the top with both Wayne and Mario, and Bobby Orr, another Hall of Famer who' s knowledge of the game is better than your's and mine, said mario was the best he had ever seen.
fact, Mario was Never 100 % even when young, due to his back.
Ok, I don't argue Mario was more talented than Wayne, but just because you have a great talent don't make you the best. Also, according to you, Mario had such a huge talent that he would not have need many games to beat records. It's clear. If he really was the greatest, than some 900 games should be enough for him to become the Great One. And again, NO excuses.
And by those millions I also meant NHL experts, not just two hall of famers.
Wayne was the best team player just as Mario was the more talented.
Mario missed alot of games NOT to injury but rather tons of games during prime years to poor health.
A bad back he had in Jr hockey, Cancer and Anemia plus the fatique and treatment releated to both caused him to take 1 entire season off, miss 3 quartrers of 2 others and one quarter of many others as well as 2 1/2 more in between his 1st/ 2nd retirements.
He played only 915 of 1,428 potential reg season games.
If you want to go by goals-per-game, then Mike Bossy beats Lemieux by a hair. His career was ever more severely curtailed by injury, last playing a few months after turning 30. One of the many reasons Gretzky stands above Lemieux is his general health: he stayed healthy and used his superlative talent to push the bar well beyond what anyone else will ever manage to accomplish, unless the game rules are drastically altered. "Most Goals, Career" is one of many records he'll own forever.
HOLY SHIT LOOK AT HOW YOUNG FUCKING BRODEUR IS HOLY SHIT I HATE HIM BUT I STILL DONT BELIVE THAT THAT IS HIM i mean look at him he looks 18 now he looks like a old hag and plays like one 2
He scored 583 goals in 9 seasons with the Oilers. That's 65 goals per season. He scored 311 goals in 12 seasons with L.A., St. Louis, and NY. That's 25 goals per season.
I love having Jesus' long, veiny, sinewy penis slide in and out of my moist, warm mouth; having Jesus burst his load onto my face and Jesus in full orgasm gasping out, "Oh God!", and having God in the back corner of the room with the video camera saying sharply, "Don't turn your face away, don't turn your face away!"
At least spell Gretzky properly, not Grezky, in the description and use the word break, not brake.

Bobby Orr said that Lemieux was the best he had ever seen.
Paul Coffey who won cups with both Gretzky and Lemieux said that Mario was the best player he ever played with.
Sports Illustrated in 97 upon his first retierment said that Lemieux was the most gifted player ever.
He is the 7th al time leading scorer with 690 goals and 1,033 assist and he only played 915 out of 1,428 potential games.
Do the math.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
If I keep doing math I'll end up going blind with Wayne's 61 NHL records. Actually: 62 - the record for having the most records. He is the most statistically dominant athlete in sports history. One of his skills, if you will, was a supernatural ability to recover from whatever abuse his body took, and stay healthy enough to create for 1,487 games. Look, you and I will never agree on this. That's cool. 99 and 66 respected each other. At least we haven't devolved into name-calling. Points for us.
thegoldenyear 2 years ago
Being healty was key.
Heck, the Oilers won a Cup after Wayne left, LOL.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
As this clip states: "When it comes to excellence sustained over a career, one man stands above all others." It's a grey area when we try to compare skills because context is everything. Orr benefitted from an NHL that had just doubled in teams; 99 and 66 did from a flowing game that rewarded freelancing. In 66's first six seasons he played one playoff; WG only two in his last six. Mario got a lot of ice time on those teams; Wayne's drop-off in a trap era was exacerbated by his poor teams.
thegoldenyear 2 years ago
But we definitely agree on health. Trust me: as a sports fan whose two favourite athletes are Mike Bossy and Dave Stieb, I've grumbled while lesser players passed them by because they were able to play for 20 years. Mario would've had a lot more points, for sure. Probably end up at #2 in everything, unless Bossy had been able to play 16-18 years and score another 300 goals. That's why sports is so compelling. There are tons of factors...and almost as many viewpoints.
thegoldenyear 2 years ago
He would've been # 2, some say #1.
A few season records he fell short of due to health.
89/93 by the all star games he was well on pace to break Waynes single season scoring.
In 89 he broke his wrist, in 93 he left due to cancer.
In 89 he was only a few games away from breaking Wayne's consecutive scoring games but he started a bad back game so the streak was snapped.
Had he not started he could have continued the streak later.
Docs say we never saw him better than 75% due to his back.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Here's some math, did Mario ever score 50 in 39. Gee, I don't think he did. Mario was great but Gretzky will always be The Great One.
lizrprty 2 years ago
mario according to doctors never played a single game at any time in his carrer at 100 %, even in JR, Hockey.
He always ahd a bad back.
At best in his youth in the NHL he was maybe 75 %.
Mario mathces Wayne's averages.
Paul Coffe won Cups with both and said Mario was the best he ever played with.
Bobby Orr said Mario was the most talented he'd ever seen.
SI 1993 said Mario was the most physically gifted ever.
mario only played 915 of 1428 potential games, do the math.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Your percentage stats are ridiculous. Mario played 100% of his own capabilities, which were not as good as Gretzky and that's why he's not considered the best ever, Gretzky is...
Irato99 2 years ago
Check Mario's bio, He was never 100%.
Between a back surgeries, a limited back, fatigue from both blood disorders, Kemo and Cancer
Wayne is best based on his career stats which he attained with a great team from day 1 and good health most of his career.
Lemiuex played several years with the worst team maybe ever,he had NO talent around him for a long time.
Paul Coffe said mario was the best he ever played with and he won Cups with both and Bobby Orr said mario was the best he'd ever seen.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Mario was always playing 100% of his own CAPABILITIES, talent is worthless if you're not in good shape.
Another Mario fan who doesn't know anything, can you name all the great players Wayne was playing with on DAY ONE back in 1979?
Irato99 2 years ago
Messier, Lowe 79 ,Coffey, Anderson, Kurri, 80, Fuhr 81.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
If you can't play 100% in the NHL, go play golf... Gretzky was a real athlete, real dedication and always gave 100%, that's why he's by far the greatest player ever...
Irato99 2 years ago
You are missing my point.
Mario played as well as he could considering his limitations with his back problems, poast back surgery blood anema fatigue, Cancer fatique, Kemo fatique, but Wayne was for the most part always 100% helathy and mario still matches or betters his averges for pts and goals per game.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
I think it's you who's missing the point. You are as good as you are on the ice and excuses are for losers. And Mario's career averages are irrelevant because they would've dropped if he played as much as Gretzky.
Irato99 2 years ago
By the same token Mario upheld those averages without being in good health.
It doesn't matter, Wayne holds the records and that's al the shallow fans look at.
Watch the highlight films, Mario's are way more impressive.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Watch the record book, which name do you see everywhere?
Irato99 2 years ago
I already said that.
However, Wayne was almost always
100 % healthy every season but I think one with the Kings.
Lemieux would win scoring titles and miss 20 plus games and only played 915 games.
The averages don't lie and they were better before he came back in 2001.
There are many sports where the one with al the records was not a physically gifted as the another.
That's why Orr and Coffey said Lemieux was the best.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
If Gretzky had as much time to rest as Mario did being away of the game so often his stats avg would be even higher.
If Gretzky was as big as Mario and if Mario was as small as Gretzky, his stats would be even higher than high.
But that's all excuses, like injuries and stuff...
Irato99 2 years ago
Beingout of the game as long as mario makes you rusty not rested and Marios size made gus drape all over him and get away with hooks becasue he was so big they wouldn't call it as often as on a smaller guy.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
How many more time can you repeat the same old lies?
Orr and Coffey said Mario was the most talented, that doesn't make you the best.
Your percentage excuse is meaningless, you seem to think that Mario is the only player ever not playing 100% all the time. Just stop mentioning this, try to find real facts please.
Irato99 2 years ago
And please, being injured a lot doesn't make you a better player, just like a car always broken doesn't make it a better car, even if it performs well the few times it's on the road.
Health and durability are criterias required for greatness as important as skills for an athlete. Gretzky had the ability to beat all the records and keep them and that's these accomplishments that define true greatness.
Irato99 2 years ago
Okay, Fair enough, that' my point.
Wayne was able to take advatage of his good ehalth because he had the talent to do so.
Mario is the only guy who is considered to be as if not more talented than Wayne.
Allof the oters who fall short of wayne aren't mentioned in the same breath when it comes to talent.
Lemieux, who is considered as talented, if not more proved that it was not a flase claim by doing what he did in only 915 games.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Wayne gretzky played his whole career, if you remove the "older" years of which Mario didn't play, you'll see that Gretzky average is much higher. In any case, final pt per game average is higher for gretzky
mcool93 2 years ago
My point was than Mario was young he still was not 100 % at any pont in his career, due to his back.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Worst team ever? :D I''l tell you thing: there was NO hockey in LA before Gretzky.
And really, excuses are for losers. You can say similar about anyone. And imagine, if superman would have played in NHL! But sorry, there are facts, which you can't argue with. And you don't become the best just for potential.

Based on goal per game average Lemieux would have smoked Gretzky had he not missed 513 games and played a totla of 572 less games than Wayne.
With the 513 missed he scores 182 more goals than Wayne scored and 227 more than Wayne with the same amount of games Wayne played.
Bobby Orr said that mario was the best he had ever seen and Paul Coffey who won cups with both said that Mario was the best he had ever played with.
Bigbadben7 3 years ago
There is no question that Lemieux woudl've broken some of the records but if you're talking about "he said/she said" Lemieux himself said Gretzky was the best.
bobodragorn 3 years ago
I would never make a case for Lemiux had he missed most of his games past his prime.
The thing is he missed the bulk of them in his 20's and early 30's.
I wasn't even basing his "Could have Been" stats on his prime averages, just his acarrer averages.
Mario was being diplomatic, Coffey won cups with Wayne and Mario and said Mario is the best he ever played with, and Bobby Or said Mario was the best he had ever seen.
Bigbadben7 3 years ago
And millions other people named Gretzky "The Great One". Think about it ;)
Muxej 2 years ago
Millions look at the final stats.
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
Ok, I don't argue Mario was more talented than Wayne, but just because you have a great talent don't make you the best. Also, according to you, Mario had such a huge talent that he would not have need many games to beat records. It's clear. If he really was the greatest, than some 900 games should be enough for him to become the Great One. And again, NO excuses.
And by those millions I also meant NHL experts, not just two hall of famers.
Muxej 2 years ago
Wayne was the best team player just as Mario was the more talented.
Mario missed alot of games NOT to injury but rather tons of games during prime years to poor health.
A bad back he had in Jr hockey, Cancer and Anemia plus the fatique and treatment releated to both caused him to take 1 entire season off, miss 3 quartrers of 2 others and one quarter of many others as well as 2 1/2 more in between his 1st/ 2nd retirements.
He played only 915 of 1,428 potential reg season games.
Crazy!
Bigbadben7 2 years ago
If you want to go by goals-per-game, then Mike Bossy beats Lemieux by a hair. His career was ever more severely curtailed by injury, last playing a few months after turning 30. One of the many reasons Gretzky stands above Lemieux is his general health: he stayed healthy and used his superlative talent to push the bar well beyond what anyone else will ever manage to accomplish, unless the game rules are drastically altered. "Most Goals, Career" is one of many records he'll own forever.
thegoldenyear 2 years ago
Mario's goals per game were the best ntil he returned yet again when he should have stayed retired.
Bossy took the lead by default.

He scored 583 goals in 9 seasons with the Oilers. That's 65 goals per season. He scored 311 goals in 12 seasons with L.A., St. Louis, and NY. That's 25 goals per season.
Just some fun facts for you.
