I would give it to Paul, because he is faster and arguably more melodic, but keep in mind Yngwie was one of the first "breakthrough" guitarists in the 80's,and possibly the most influencial besides Joe Satriani. He was and still is an inspiration for many guitarists such as Jeff Loomis and others.

you picked a terrible paul gilbert solo and a mediocre yngwie solo. both are true masters and virtuosos at what they do, but paul is the more well rounded player. he can play more genres of music than yngwie and he can play them all very fluently. yngwie is the bigger innovator, but im going for paul as the better guitar player.

Yngwie hands down, he helped bring in a whole new style of music neo classical metal, a lot of the playing Paul does which is very good, sounds a lot like yngwie's playing which many people at the time were riping yngwie or van halen off.

Malmsteen's solo is much more difficult than Gilbert's.

There is no doubt though that Paul has better technique than Yngwie and can play successfully more styles while Malmsteen plays just neoclassical.

@joesatriani1200rulez you know what, i rarely ever change my mind about anything but after listen to a lot of gunthrie video's he possibly is perfect. is he as fast and smooth as the like of shawn lane, paul gilbert or bucketH? we dont quite know, regardless music isnt about speed.

playing liker paul gilbert for a few seconds is doable by most. entire songs? not so.

He only has one album whereas paul and the others have many at relatively the same age as gunthrie... lets just wait and see.

he has the perfect phrasing, feel, amazing melodic sense, blues, jazz, funk, this guy has experienced everything, after reading alot about him its so obvious now that he's clearly the best, he's mastered everything from joe pass to BB king to albert lee to steve vai, satch, paul, yngwie im sorry but guthrie has it all!

people with advanced technical abilities are able to do this, and its personal preference to a degree. I cant stand rusty cooley but a lot of people say he's the greatest guitarist ever.

@turnbacktime well if they could play different styles dont you think youd hear it in their playing? ive never heard any jazz or blues in their playing, maybe a tiny little bit of blues but thats it, paul gilbert can only play in Eminor and Aminor most of the time and he plays the same licks over and over again nothing different or new never happens with the both of them and it gets extremely boring, whereas guthrie has something new to throw at you everyday.

@PGManiac Technical difficulties starts on a riff with the root as C , so technically its C lydian, C lydian is related to G major and so is E aeolian, but paul actually plays E minor in techincally diffculties but it is technically C lydian. but paul plays all the same patterns and i hear that one particular lick about 20 times in his songs. And i dont particulary like his last 3 albums, paul and yngwie do play all the same things. But i do like paul gilbert but theres only certain songs i like

@MarcosKtulu Paul is many things...maby he is faster now but he wasnt faster when yngwie was 21...He was the best(imo)guitarist/virtuoso of that age...Paul is a great guitarist no doubt about that i respect them both...but there are many Pauls...when Yngwie was 21 there were no Yngwie's just one...Back then he had an amasing Tone(vibrato and stuff)that no one can imitate...Now i agree he is fat...But hes a musician not a model..Yngwie lost that tone...Gilberts better now...But back then...dude..
