For those of you that do not really know who Nina Gordon is, I recommend you check out the band Veruca Salt and their songs "All Hail Me" or "Shutterbug". Her and Louise Post used to tear it down. They were the female version of Soundgarden/Alice In Chains.

those were the days when you actually had to have some singing talent to play pop music. Knowing how to play a guitar didn't hurt either. notice how when she moved away from the mic her voice wasn't as loud? That's called not lip syncing. you kids probably don't remember but this was the norm back in the day.

now it's all computerized auto tune to make everyone sound like an android.

@MoseyBurns Autotuning was first made popular in the 1990's. For example, Cher, another artist who can actually sing well, released Believe in 1998. She deliberately used autotuning in that song to do some odd adjustments on her voice with wonderful effect.

This song was released in 2000.

I agree that actually singing is far better than autotuned crap. However, this song is not from "back in the day." She chooses to actually sing, which makes her style even better.

@tjhombs The point still stands however. Cher didn't use auto-tune in spite of her ability to sing the song properly without it. She used auto-tune because it would have sounded like an abomination otherwise. Which in turn remains the primary reason people use auto-tune to this very day.

I would venture to say Nina Gordon has never used auto-tune because she's never needed it, and when she can no longer sing properly it's doubtful we'll see her using auto-tune as a crutch to keep performing.

And, no the point does not stand. It is not from when "those were the days." Nina Gordon's song came out after autotuning started.

I love this song, I remember when it came out I was a freshman in high school. The first time I heard it was on Late Night With Conan O'Brian, a lot of artists, actors, and comedians made their debut on there. I used to watch them thinking who the hell are these people because Conan use to have not well-known celebs on his show back than. This is great though!

That's Stacey Jones, heavy hitter from Gordon's former band Veruca Salt. He's always been that way. Solid drummer and he actually wrote a couple brilliant records with American Hi-Fi. Now he's the leader of the backing band for Miley Cyrus. No joke.

Absolutely agree with you. "Tonight at the Rest of My Life" is one of my favourite records of all time. Absolutely brilliant record and I still listen to it all the time. It's actually currently spinning in my car. One of the few records that I can listen to from start to finish without a track that I'd skip. A sophisticated pop record with great melodies, vocals, lyrics and produced so well. Loves it.

i figure it's either about a life changing revelation, or suicide. "this is all i want to feel tonight, and the rest of my life" could mean that she is in the state of mind she wants to be in forever, or just that it is just the last state of mind she'll ever be in because tonight IS the rest of her life.
