Great! Just what I needed. You explain in a very pedagogical way so that almoast everyone can understand how to take the computer apart. Now I'm going to open my Imac and try to refix it - I've already done the first part, but I was unsure of the rest. Thank's a lot! If you ever consider to work as a teacher in computer knowledge/English language, you're so welcome to Sweden, Mvh Margareta
Thanks a lot for your comprehensive instruction! I'm just in the midst of recuperating all the data I can from my next-to-dead drive, and your video will make the next step much easier. Thank you!
This is very helpful...I have the same iMAC.....two quick question whuts the biggest gig drive i can install..i want to put in a 500gig but if i can i'll go for a 1t bit second question...what was the proper way you detached the thermal censor from the hard drive...did you just pull it up, pry it up...and how did you attach it pack to new drive...did you apply rubber cement first then apply censor or attached censor first then rubber cememnt on top.....Thanks Homie!!!
will use this video for reference. I'm going to take out the old 160GB HDD to put in a 500GB HD. Built PC's in the past but never taken apart my iMac. A but nervous though.
I just need to get the Torx bit set and the rubber cement for the temp sensor for the HDD.
Thanks for doing this tutorial, great to know there are young people out there with a productive future, this should land you a job at Apple, LOL. Keep it up!
You can also find the serial number in System Profiler. Go to the Apple and click on About This Mac. Then click on the "More Info..." button. It should appear at the bottom of the Hardware Overview.
Thanks for the video, it was helpful, though I'm left with 2 issues. The webcam is on all the time now, I must have done something to it when separating the outer bezel. Also, I couldn't get the left side of the bezel to hold, got any tips on getting those levers to catch so they hold the top together snugly? I had to push upward on the whole outer business to get it to release originally, and I'm not sure what the trick is to get it to hold.
I had a simliar issue with my webcam, except it doesn't turn on now! Might want to check the connection to the computer inside. Getting the bezel to hold can be really tricky, mine is not quite right either, i don't think you will ever be able to get it back together perfectly.
I'm afraid I don't, but i don't think it would be easy as the only way to get to the back and the stand is by taking everything else out first (kinda like emptying a grocery bag!)
Have you done one replacing the DVD drive or getting DVD out of the drive? i've been battling for weeks trying to remove a DVD, tries and tries but can't seem to get it all the way out.
After I replaced the harddrive, when I was reinstalling the OS discs, I got to the part where it says : "select a destination volume to install the Mac OSX software." But there is not hard drive being recognized by the computer apparently, because the box is blank and I am given no options for what to select. Any idea, you would certainly help me out greatly. Thanks in advance.
You need to format your drive. Go to the top menu and select disk Utility. In the window that opens you should see the new drive listed to the left. Select in and tell disk utility how you want it formatted and how many partitions and whatever else you want to do like name it and the type of format you want. Click format drive and then quit the disk utility. Then resume the installation process. The installer should now see the drive.
Sorry about not replying sooner to your question! Thanks tjspike852 for answering, that's definitely a problem that will happen with a lot of drives (if not all).
hey thank you man but i have a question, when i put the screen back in place is it normal that its hard as hell to put the screws pack in the hole..lol..it took me forever they kept falling back in
That is definitely true- took me ages. When I opened the iMac up again the other day I had to resort to taping the screws to the screwdriver so I could get them in! The screw design for the iMac is probably the worst I have ever had to open!
Hi Elliot. First, sorry about my english, I'm from spain... Second, one question: I've tried to find my "iMac Intel 17" service manual" over the internet (Google hehehehehe) but I can't find it. ¿Any idea someone?
¡Oh! I forgive to say you have done a great job, really, very good. See you all and thnx!
thanks alot for this i kept following the vid while doing it. My hard drive is not western digital it was maxtor. thats weird maybe they use different brands for different sizes or they dont have a specific only brand. but thanks for the tutorial i kept trying the other imac way that works on the ones without iSight's
nice video cool stuff man so i need to know what can i do if de cd in the dvd rom stucks into the super drive i need to get it off can you help me with that
Your best best is to take it into an Apple store if it is mechanically not coming out. I had the same problem about half a year ago, they had to switch the drive out. If its a software thing, try starting the computer holding down your mouse button, as this should pop anything out that won't come out due to a software glitch. Hope that helps!
Great instruction. My screen is cracked behind the LCD (a ball hit is square in the centre). Can I just replace the glass do you think? What would you do?
I think if I were you, and the mac was under AppleCare or the oneyear warranty, I would take it in to get looked at. Otherwise, I guess you could search around for replacement screen (I believe you have to get the Lcd with the glass) on places like eBay or somewhere.
Thank you for a most instructive and very well produced video. I've just recently bought one of these machines for my son and need to replace the combo drive with a superdrive. I presume the procedure is largely similar to replacing the hard disk drive but I'd be very interested in your comments if you have any specific experience of this. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
As far as the super drive, I would assume it is a similar process. I did not try it when I looked at the HD, but I have had a super drive fail before (thank goodness I had it in warranty). As far as I can remember, it should be pretty easy to remove.
When you first opened yours, did you notice if there was any noticeable buildup of dust? I have the same late 2006 model and I am getting lines of video artifacts on the display and have read on forums that it is the result of an overheating videocard, so I wonder if it would be worth a try to open it up and clean out any dust
As far as i can remember, there wasn't too much dust in my machine, other than a little bit in the fan and here and there. I suppose dust in the fan could cause overheating. You could also try taking it into the Apple store if its still under warranty, I have had good experience with the fixing stuff.
Im not too sure. I think it is harder to replace those parts. The HD is the easiest. You might want to search around some forums and see if its possible. Thanks for asking!
Can you do a video on how to upgrade your processor, because i got a shitty 2.0 GHZ pro duo. It's to slow and i don't like it! Please or could you give me a link?
Great tutorial, my hard drive crashed over the weekend, after viewing your video I went to best buys bought a terabyte hd and installed it, 4 hours later I was up and running including reinstalling backup from my external hd. Thanks again

Hello Elliot, thanks for taking the time for all to learn this.
I have a Mac that has a black vertical bar appearing/disappearing with no obvious reason.
Have you hear about this problem? Maybe a tip on what cables/components to check? Thanks for your attention.

It is a SATA drive and I guess a glue gun would work (although it might not read the temp correctly afterwards)

The serial # is on the bottom of the stand. If you put the imac face down and look at the bottom of the stand you can see it.
ElliottMediaGroup 2 years ago
is that the only place because mine is missing and my screen is also broken
