I agree in many points of this review, but I still like this movie, just like the entire saga.
There's no shame in either but why does it matter if some like a film and others don't. Not one film will be universally loved or despised 'cause everyone's different.
There is no crime likeing this movie. But go ahead, sue me if you want.
Please make a Lord of the Rings review! I wanted to walk out of it in the first 2 minutes...I think it can start with something like..... Preproduction boardroom conversation: Ok, people... We need a way to show that Sauron is evil. How about Spikes! Hmm..good idea, but we need to show that he is REEALLY evil. Any Ideas? Ummm..More Spikes? WTF! The stupid, inept, director made the worst decisions...casting, story, and character cliches. It went against everything that made the books great.
@magnus83102 I have to say, it's refreshing to see that kind of hate for movies that everyone seems to love unquestioningly. I think you're mad, though! :P I love those movies and, yes, I've read the books multiple times. So did Peter Jackson and all of his co-writers and art designers. They were working with an immense, immense knowledge of Tolkien and his universe.
@Agahnim18 I have not seen/suffered though it since I stormed out of the theater, but I think I have at least one major complaint with every scene in the movie. Over all it can be boiled down to this...If you have a masterpiece that people have been waiting for decades to see on the screen, why attempt to change it? You would have to be extemely arrogant or naive to think that your changes would make the story better than it already is. PJ might have read it but he didn't follow it.
@magnus83102 I'd say he did mostly, aside from the understandable and necessary alterations or abridgments for the adaptation, but whatever floats your boat.... :/
I remember seeing Phantom Menace on opening weekend in a jam packed theater. I was very excited, but somewhere during the "submarine" scene thru the planets core, I had this feeling of let down. When the DVD came out, I only watched it once. The weird thing is, Ive spoken to other people about what point that they thought that this movie sucked ass, and some have said it was round about the Gungan underwater city scenes too. The newest Indiana Jones movie never had a chance.
@VerticalMARS1 Aye, what with people ready to rag on Lucas and co. no matter what they did next. >_>
I'm convinced that if the original SW or Indy films were released today, in this current climate, people would drag them to hell and back, too. KotS would be looked at as the classic Indy with the more believable McGuffin, SW IV-VI would be seen as bereft of all of its intricate plotting and character-based drama and you'd have people refusing to judge them for what they were. :|
Thank you for doing this, I was watching a segment with my Dad and he remembered taking me to see ep.4 when I was 5. He has dementia but still recalls this and enjoyed your review of the "newer" star wars. The actors of the old star wars make the actors of the new seem robotic. Before seeing ep.1 I was eager to see the SFX. the story ruined how far SFX had gone. midi what?!?
Honestly I haven't seen the Phantom Menace in awhile, and this review brought up a lot of the questions I had while watching it. This was really well done, very funny, I found it hard containing my laughter at times. And many of your points were spot on
Thanks for taking the time to break down the never ending flaws of this travesty to the Star Wars movies. I was 7 years old when Star Wars - New Hope was originally in the theaters and was completely taken by not just the characters, space ships and robots, but also by the sacrifice and quest for growth and the spiritual. Like so many others, I watched the three originals endlessly over the next +15 years and was completely devestated when presented with the lifeless movies that followed.
@Agahnim18 And before you try to correct my spelling as most people backed into an Internet corner normally do, I meant contrived. Autocorrect is a bitch.
@chosentonessournotes Who the hell cares about your spelling? You assume I'm that shallow? I'm not the one ragging on movies because they have too much talking. >_>

An excellent reminder to stop giving George Lucas our money. Episode I comes out in 3D next month. What a statement it would be if next to no one went to see it!
I mean, after the Star Wars prequels and Indy 4...why should we care? T'would be great if this turd was out of theaters come the second weekend. No artist should be able to make ONE good movie and then make money by rehashing it over and over....
@Agahnim18 Why? Because I'm fed up with seeing you defend a shitty movie on all seven fucking parts of this review? Go outside and do something with your life.
@chosentonessournotes I've posted on about two or three of the parts, plus I usually don't check back for days at a time. Is that the best you can do? How about smartening up and looking into the actual movies and listening instead of insulting everything that doesn't fit into the narrow fantasy you fellas have created around them? >_>
@Agahnim18 I HAVE seen the movies. Why do you assume that I'm "blindly" following RLM's opinion? And how can an opinion be taken out of context? That's not possible. Maybe you should accept that people hate this movie, get over it, and quit ramming your ideals and opinions down OUR throats? If you don't like the review, quit bothering to come back. Fuck.
@chosentonessournotes What I don't understand is why people can't be objective. Be it games. movies, music, etc there are plenty terribly written, badly designed, generally horrible things that I can enjoy watching for just the fun of it, or a certain charm, etc.
When I was younger I liked the phantom menace. Kind of.
It holds some nostalgia, but I can see that it was plagued with issues and it is legitimately pretty awful.
@PwnZoneification There's a huge difference between enjoying a film for it's camp value or it's nostalgia value, and defending a movie the way Agahnim18 is, like it's the fucking Holy Grail. I've seen countless comments from him calling out Mike Stoklasa and other fans of RLM saying we're all brainless followers and can't form our own opinions. He fails to understand we just genuinely don't like the prequels.
@chosentonessournotes Yeah I know. It doesn't matter really what you thought of the movie beforehand anyway, I'm not a critic and I don't think about things too in-depth usually.
But a lot of good points were made in the argument of the movie being bad. And nearly everything said was completely accurate.
So, it doesn't matter if one likes it. They should still be able to admit that it's really poorly made.
@PwnZoneification I don't know about accuracy. Have you read the 108 page response to these reviews? I don't completely agree with the author, but he breaks down all the misinformation and heavy bias in this review pretty nicely. Also, check out the Lard Biscuit essay on why they think Phantom Menace is awesome. A lot of well made points that actually pull from the movie and present things as they are, instead of rinsed of all things that don't fit the agenda.
@chosentonessournotes You're simply wrong. You haven't been following my posts, have you? Stoklasa, yes, I've called him out for being an idiot, because he's acting like one, but anyone else I only respond to (not insult) if I see them saying something that totally boggles my mind/I want clarification on or when they start insulting me or others first for daring to like and defend these films (like what we're going through here).
@PwnZoneification That's my question, really. Why can't people be objective? Why can't they judge the movie for what it is and not with the expectation that it be as action-packed and simple and on a roughly equivalent standing SFX-wise (for some reason) as an original trilogy film? Why outright ignore story and character elements to suit their fancies? Why create problems where there are none? Why condemn a "flaw" here and ignore them in the originals? Etc.
@chosentonessournotes I assume you're blindly (maybe not you personally; I don't even remember what we've discussed with each other, to be honest >_>) following RLM's opinions because they flatout lie and ignore things and they're made out to be totally accurate. It's mad and reeks of shallowness, from their part and from their fans'.
I'm not ramming my opinions down anyone's throat. I came in pointing out the bad, dishonest reviewing and related BS. People attacked me.
@Agahnim18 How fucking long are you gonna whine about these shitty movies? Episodes 1, 2, and 3 were the biggest travesties to ever stink up cinemas. I would rather see fucking Paul Blart than these "films". "Waaah he took everything out of context!" I doubt that. Your pathetic cannot brain just happens to interpret everything as George Lucas = God. Fuck off already.
@Agahnim18 And it cracks me up... He clearly says, "That's just my interpretation, I wasn't there," in response to them viewing the rough cut. You accuse him of taking things out of context when you do just that; take his words out of context. You're a hypocritical piece of garbage who just needs to cut the shit and realize the prequels are fucking awful. Quit living in denial.
@chosentonessournotes Nope, that's still out of context. You can't interpret something that way when it's clearly spelled out otherwise.
Who's living in denial: The man who can listen to the movies he watches, gets all the facts, then decides how he likes them, or the man who knee-jerks and demands that everyone else conforms to his ill-informed, ill-gotten, self-obsessed bullshit? People like these movies. Get over it and shut up.
@Agahnim18 Honestly, all I have seen is you trying to post a fucking rebuttal to every single person's opinion about these shit movies that you don't agree with. I mean, if you like the movie, I guess it's acceptable if you're a fucking robot, or a fat idiot retard or something. Otherwise the plot is boring and contribed, the characters have NO CHARACTER, the scenes are so boring that I wonder how it ever got funding... I don't care if you like it, I just think you're delusional.
@chosentonessournotes lol No. I've ignored a bunch of stupid stuff. Sometimes one gets me and I can't help myself, though. >_<
Think I'm delusional all you want. Just know that I'm laughing at the notion that you can't follow a character's arc and basically admit to just wanting simpler stories and more action. Don't act like you're so much more highbrow, heartbreakingly intelligent, and knowledgeable about film than those of us who like the movies with demands like yours.
Your review is jar jar poodo..and you should be shut down. Your opinion means absolutely nothing to anybody..i love EP1..and im going to be first to see it at the movies on 3D. Now stfu
I just feel like most of the time, giving someone complete creative control is a terrible idea. It works for some people, but just look at Lucas and M Night Shaymalan. Both made great movies when they didn't have full creative control, but as soon as they got that full control, everything they pumped out was shit.
This entire review pretty much sums up everything I feel about the Star Wars prequels. There was potential but the flaws with the characters and the ridiculous story just butchered it. I refuse to accept the prequels as canon until there's some real character development and story.
At this point Lucas should have greatly diminished control over his product, and some other people need to step in.
I thought Return of the Jedi's three climactic sequences were very effectively edited together (regardless of one's opinion of the Ewoks). But any more and it would be too much. Especially when they have no dramatic tension.
@akumatekkusu666 Agree dwith JJ Abrams but Christopher Nolan should be part of that reboot. Not to mention that said reboot should be a collaboration of LucasFilm and Legendary Pictures. Only then would we really get to know Anakin, Palpatine and Darth Maul.
@akumatekkusu666 I don't think Nolan would want to make Star Wars realistic. I loved what he did with Batman's story. He exposed him as a real hero, not some rich kid wearing a bat suit like we were led to believe with all the previous movies.
Same thing he could do with Anakin and the rest of the Jedi and the Sith. We would see who the real Darth Maul was and what he could do as well as Palpatine's master plan without the loopholes that this (5 star) review perfectly exposes.
I actually think they should of made Darth Maul the main villain of the prequel trilogy, no Qui Gon, Obi-Wan was a young adventures Jedi Knight, Anakin was like Luke in New Hope and didn't build 3po, Yoda didn't need a Lightsaber, had Bobba Fett play a big part in it. and Palpatine's plans made sense
Palpatine's entire plan revolved around luck, coincidences, just hoping the good guys would walk headfirst into a few traps, and even sabotaging himself at points.
@akumatekkusu666 Um. . . no. There's no denying that happened a few times, like when Padme ended up in Coruscant without having signed the Treaty, but he was usually able to turn these things to his advantage.
@akumatekkusu666 it's spelled canon when talking about being part of the official story.
I feel that, as amazing as JJ is, he would only further convolute the Star Wars universe if he remade the prequels. JJ is great at rebooting with his own stories, but then episodes 4,5, and 6 couldn't take place after his movies... so everything would still be separated.
I honestly believe that George should have taken prequel ideas from writers of Star Wars books. Drew Karpyshyn is always a good choice.
@EnkiduV3 I don't think any of them should be remade. Fine the way they are, imo. I'd love to see people come in and create completely new stories within the universe, though! :D
@akumatekkusu666 what really sucks is that George Lucas is trying so hard to make them cannon by changing the originals (which he shouldn't have to do if he stayed true to HIS OWN STORY).
@akumatekkusu666 Yeah. These movies deserve to be remade. Over Lucas' dead body if necessary. Copyrights be damned; you trash your own property that much you lose rights to it IMO.
also this review is like everything i ever wanted from a star wars review. it reflected my frustrations perfectly and was much much more interesting and coherent than the fucking phantom menace
When I watched this movie in theaters when it came out I seriously wanted a refund... I felt cheated and I"m a BIG fan of the old movies... I have no idea how this mess happened... I think it's clear no one wanted to challenge Lucas ... He has some holly-wood pull from his name and they were just scared to challenge him... They made there money I guess but they certainly didn't make a good movie.. I mean it's a fucking mess...
@ 5:24 Isn't it obvious!?! George Lucas is a Sith! Much like Palpatine, Vader, and the other Sith in the extended universe, he rules by fear! His bad jokes are laughed at because of 'force' manipulation!
Damn, I was hoping you'd go into the sort of incredibly funny incoherent rage you displayed in numerous other posts on this video (which I read with increasing amusement). Maybe you calmed down or got better meds? Kudos, however, for having sufficient self-knowledge to call your page 'Home of the teen who rants'. :)
@samtheking25 Yes you did. So did I - but we were both far more enlightened about what's going on when they make these movies, than we would ever see from 140 of those 30 second blurbs from the Hollywood press sites...
@HitEmWithTheMule From Wikipedia: "Kasdan claims he told Lucas that Return of the Jedi was "a weak title", and Lucas later decided to name the film Revenge of the Jedi. "
The first movie I ever watched in this series was the Return of the Jedi. I was 12 years old and I my English wasn't that great yet (came to the USA in 1980). Yet the whole movie made sense and I enjoyed it very much at the time. Fast forward almost 2 decades and I see the Phantom Menace, and even though I now have a University degree I was totally confused in the movie. Where are we? Why do we care? What is going on? None of it made much sense.
It should be pointed out that return of the Jedi was a plot nightmare. Why distract the rebels by leading them to Endor, where the REAL shield generator was hanging out? Why not have them go to some other planet/moon in that solar system? Surely there are other planets. Just put a dummy shield generator there far away from tiny teddy bears that destroy the IMPERIAL ARMY
@piecharthosen Well, for example, the bit about how even Lucas and co. hated the movie and thought the pacing was shitty is from a viewing of a rough cut of the film, which was edited after they saw what they thought needed to be edited. This review shows it as if it was the final cut of the movie. Also, it's kind of funny how Ben Burtt's criticism of the rough cut directly contradicts this reviewer's claim that everyone around Lucas is a spineless yes-man. :P
This reminds me of the chip wars in the 90's and beginning of the new millennium. Intel and AMD were neck-in-neck when it came to making the best CPU's. Heck, Apple evenade their own chips. Now, they're all made by Intel. AMD has decided to stick to mobile devices...innovation from Intel is going to stagnate. Art from Adversity could be a restatement of Innovation from Competition.
@daricsoldar This reminds me of The Mona Lisa. Leonardo was so driven to "perfect" it that he painted it and modified it over and over again to his heart's content until his death. Today, that's considered one of his greatest works. There's something to be said about a perfectionist doing what he can because he can. :P
Boy you hit the nail on the head. I have never heard anyone describe in detail what was wrong with the prequel triligoy. I tried giving them multiple chances to grow on me by watching them over on DVD but never admitting to the fact. I hated talking about them because...I fealt a disturbance in the Force....I just couldn't quite put my finger on specificaly why. The short Star Wars Old Republic video game trailers were better than Episodes 1,2 &3 anyday.
@TheSprueDude@MajorCinnamonBun1 I JUST read it a few days ago and I don't remember anything like that. Not for any real or new criticism. I remember him ONLY pointing out the ludicrousness of a statement when he'd already responded to the same (or a similar) kind of assertion earlier, even pointing out that it was more of the same nonsense discussed in length in a previous section.
I was nine when I saw this movie in theaters, and I still like it, even with all the negative things I hear about it (which are based on fact, I admit). While it's certainly inferior to the original trilogy, I don't hate it. I look at it as a way to make the first three look even better by comparison. Besides, why should I deny what I feel about a movie just because a lot of fans dislike it?
@millenniumf1138 "While it's certainly inferior to the original trilogy, I don't hate it. I look at it as a way to make the first three look even better by comparison."
LOL. Similarly, I always put on Cop Dog first before watching Blade Runner...
Haha, I have to admit I enjoyed Phantom Menace when I first watched it, I was about 8 so its understandable why I liked it, when your still in primary school you enjoy watching big special effects.
When you get older you prefur the story and pacing :D
when i finished the phantom menace i felt like i wasted my hours. then i realized the universe meant for that time as preparations to enjoy your reviews.
I went to all of them in cinema, but about 2004/5? a friend rented Phantom cause he hadn't seen it. He was pissed cause a few of us started to play some card game or something. I never do that, i happily sit through many shitty movies i've seen before. But i couldn't with it. Star wars ffs!
You're right, recently i attempted to watch the Phantom EDIT, but after 10min i switched off. It really is done for me. I'm not a fanboy, i love movies yet 1,2,3 don't exist.
One of the most incredible works to ever hit YouTube. This was actually more enjoyable to watch the star wars prequels. It's amazing how thought and creativity when kept simple and straight forward make a movie so much more enjoyable.
I always thought these movies were not that great when I first watched them, but you definitely broke it down way more for me and helped me realize how utterly awful they were
I like the prequels but never realized all these plotholes. But still I love all the Star Wars films despite the flaws. Really amazing and in depth review can't watch the others now. Thank you
I'd love to do something like this for Marvel Comic's Civil War. How poorly concieved and written it was and even before It was finished that had become obvious. They they took the biggest concepts ever to be put in a Marvel Comic and completely wasted them by changing the characters in radical ways and put them in positions that made no sense and had no way of paying them off. It diminished Marvel's credibility and writing quality. It had fans scratching their heads..l you get the idea.
If you've ever worked for a narcissist, you'll know that it is almost impossible to challenge them. It's incredibly difficult to mention bad news. You can't ever acknowledge their mistakes no matter how obvious. If you're given instructions to do something stupid, you'll get in serious trouble for challenging them. You'll get in trouble for ignoring them. Or you'll get in trouble for following them, and you'll get blamed for doing something stupid. It's the worst kind of leadership.
I agree in many points of this review, but I still like this movie, just like the entire saga.
There's no shame in either but why does it matter if some like a film and others don't. Not one film will be universally loved or despised 'cause everyone's different.

Fuck off already.
chosentonessournotes 4 days ago
@chosentonessournotes You're an idiot, you know?
Agahnim18 4 days ago
@Agahnim18 And it cracks me up... He clearly says, "That's just my interpretation, I wasn't there," in response to them viewing the rough cut. You accuse him of taking things out of context when you do just that; take his words out of context. You're a hypocritical piece of garbage who just needs to cut the shit and realize the prequels are fucking awful. Quit living in denial.
chosentonessournotes 4 days ago
@chosentonessournotes Nope, that's still out of context. You can't interpret something that way when it's clearly spelled out otherwise.
Who's living in denial: The man who can listen to the movies he watches, gets all the facts, then decides how he likes them, or the man who knee-jerks and demands that everyone else conforms to his ill-informed, ill-gotten, self-obsessed bullshit? People like these movies. Get over it and shut up.
Agahnim18 4 days ago
@Agahnim18 Honestly, all I have seen is you trying to post a fucking rebuttal to every single person's opinion about these shit movies that you don't agree with. I mean, if you like the movie, I guess it's acceptable if you're a fucking robot, or a fat idiot retard or something. Otherwise the plot is boring and contribed, the characters have NO CHARACTER, the scenes are so boring that I wonder how it ever got funding... I don't care if you like it, I just think you're delusional.
chosentonessournotes 4 days ago
@chosentonessournotes lol No. I've ignored a bunch of stupid stuff. Sometimes one gets me and I can't help myself, though. >_<
Think I'm delusional all you want. Just know that I'm laughing at the notion that you can't follow a character's arc and basically admit to just wanting simpler stories and more action. Don't act like you're so much more highbrow, heartbreakingly intelligent, and knowledgeable about film than those of us who like the movies with demands like yours.

Congratulations! Fucking nice review!! You prove your point in very creatives ways. The side-jokes are boring.
dimitreze 5 days ago
I just feel like most of the time, giving someone complete creative control is a terrible idea. It works for some people, but just look at Lucas and M Night Shaymalan. Both made great movies when they didn't have full creative control, but as soon as they got that full control, everything they pumped out was shit.
objectionablechione 6 days ago
This entire review pretty much sums up everything I feel about the Star Wars prequels. There was potential but the flaws with the characters and the ridiculous story just butchered it. I refuse to accept the prequels as canon until there's some real character development and story.
At this point Lucas should have greatly diminished control over his product, and some other people need to step in.
objectionablechione 6 days ago
I thought Return of the Jedi's three climactic sequences were very effectively edited together (regardless of one's opinion of the Ewoks). But any more and it would be too much. Especially when they have no dramatic tension.
squamish4244 1 week ago
imo the so called "prequels" aren't cannon and will not be cannon until they are remade(hopefully by JJ Abrams)
akumatekkusu666 1 week ago 23
@akumatekkusu666 Agree dwith JJ Abrams but Christopher Nolan should be part of that reboot. Not to mention that said reboot should be a collaboration of LucasFilm and Legendary Pictures. Only then would we really get to know Anakin, Palpatine and Darth Maul.
AlessandroAmbruzzi 6 days ago
@AlessandroAmbruzzi
Hmmm I still think JJ Abrams. Nolan is alright but I wouldn't want him to make Star Wars realistic.
akumatekkusu666 6 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 I don't think Nolan would want to make Star Wars realistic. I loved what he did with Batman's story. He exposed him as a real hero, not some rich kid wearing a bat suit like we were led to believe with all the previous movies.
Same thing he could do with Anakin and the rest of the Jedi and the Sith. We would see who the real Darth Maul was and what he could do as well as Palpatine's master plan without the loopholes that this (5 star) review perfectly exposes.
AlessandroAmbruzzi 6 days ago
@AlessandroAmbruzzi
I actually think they should of made Darth Maul the main villain of the prequel trilogy, no Qui Gon, Obi-Wan was a young adventures Jedi Knight, Anakin was like Luke in New Hope and didn't build 3po, Yoda didn't need a Lightsaber, had Bobba Fett play a big part in it. and Palpatine's plans made sense
akumatekkusu666 5 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 Could not agree with you more!
AlessandroAmbruzzi 5 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 How did Palpatine's plans not make sense?
Agahnim18 4 days ago
@Agahnim18
Palpatine's entire plan revolved around luck, coincidences, just hoping the good guys would walk headfirst into a few traps, and even sabotaging himself at points.
akumatekkusu666 4 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 Um. . . no. There's no denying that happened a few times, like when Padme ended up in Coruscant without having signed the Treaty, but he was usually able to turn these things to his advantage.
Agahnim18 4 days ago
@akumatekkusu666
canon, dude.
22Uzbekistan 6 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 it's spelled canon when talking about being part of the official story.
I feel that, as amazing as JJ is, he would only further convolute the Star Wars universe if he remade the prequels. JJ is great at rebooting with his own stories, but then episodes 4,5, and 6 couldn't take place after his movies... so everything would still be separated.
I honestly believe that George should have taken prequel ideas from writers of Star Wars books. Drew Karpyshyn is always a good choice.
EnkiduV3 3 days ago
@EnkiduV3 I don't think any of them should be remade. Fine the way they are, imo. I'd love to see people come in and create completely new stories within the universe, though! :D
Agahnim18 3 days ago
@akumatekkusu666 oh no, not JJ "shakey cam" Abrams. God helps us.
kalsolarUK 23 hours ago
@akumatekkusu666 what really sucks is that George Lucas is trying so hard to make them cannon by changing the originals (which he shouldn't have to do if he stayed true to HIS OWN STORY).
trace1164 19 hours ago
@trace1164 He is sticking true to his story. What is he changing about the originals?
Agahnim18 19 hours ago
@Agahnim18 George Lucas was hit in the head with a baseball bat and then made the other three movies.
Serene1Psychosis 19 hours ago
@Serene1Psychosis Oh, I see.
Agahnim18 17 hours ago
@akumatekkusu666 Yeah. These movies deserve to be remade. Over Lucas' dead body if necessary. Copyrights be damned; you trash your own property that much you lose rights to it IMO.

There is only 1 logical explanation to all this
The script for the Original Star Wars was sent down from heaven, and George Lucas found it
balaalalaslk 2 weeks ago
Obviously a very influential chapter - it warranted a 69 minute 47 second review. Perhaps that makes it the most important part in the series?
dillenbeck53531 2 weeks ago
It should be pointed out that return of the Jedi was a plot nightmare. Why distract the rebels by leading them to Endor, where the REAL shield generator was hanging out? Why not have them go to some other planet/moon in that solar system? Surely there are other planets. Just put a dummy shield generator there far away from tiny teddy bears that destroy the IMPERIAL ARMY

@piecharthosen Yep, and thoroughly taken out of context, as is to be expected. >_<
Agahnim18 2 weeks ago
@Agahnim18 D: how
piecharthosen 2 weeks ago
