  • killer hash and best chocolate in the world haha

  • mike looks over like what the hell is this guy doing on my stage??? oh... wait, thats neil young... i guess he's cool!

  • that would have been amazing! why did they say no?

  • Fishman, Anastasio, Gordon, McConnell & Young

  • aaaaah 1998, back when Pepe Le Pew t-shirts were all the rage.

  • dislike? really? there is just so much to hate in this video.

  • Someone stepped on a banshee's foot in the crowd around 1:42

  • what does this happen to do with "arc"?

  • just awesome, miss 90's phish

  • why is Neil Young listed in the title? this is the real stuff, right here.

  • @comfortat, probably because he comes out near the end of the song. Watch the whole video....

  • god i love u phish.............best live show ever ppl.......anyone who can get Jay Z to want to show up to a show b/c he has heard the energy is hot, well they must be doing something right.......so much talent, where to begin

  • why can't I buy this on amazon or ITunes? wtf?

  • skunk shirt!

  • @gootch350 Not just any skunk...that's Pepe LePew

  • lovin it!

  • @AtmaRising woah easy dude we don't want to hear you masturbating

  • treys not showing off hes just reacting to what the others are playing in a way that he feels suits the tune

  • I'm not a big GD fan (have 3 albums), but got their Live in Europe in 72 back in 1972*.

Based on THIS song, sans scant vocals, the music they make falls indeed in a similar swim. That said, that Trey's more fluid than any JG *I* ever heard. *1973 most probably...1972 scanned better :-)

  • Yes, he's playing Trey's backup guitar

  • I love it when Trey knows there are a ton of great musicians around and he shows off........sweet!

  • i dont think hes showing off at all. look at the down by the river jam. He is totally feeding off of neil by playing in neils style.

  • he's always showing off - without his showing off he wouldn't be considered one of the greats. he makes a living showing off.

  • That ending just made me smile.

  • both phish and grateful dead are great. but i think it's time we quit comparing the two.

  • i bet when neil walked out there they had no idea he was gonna do that. They were probably like "holy shit thats neil fuckin young!"

  • no, he is playing trey's guitar

  • well no shit

  • its not like they gave neil young one of the languedocs and said go out there and suprise phish..... cmon dude.... that down by the river sounds like they rehearsed it

  • Perhaps it was rehearsed, but all that soloing is spontaneous. They definitely all knew the song. but DBTR is a song a lot of bands know, so maybe they just knew it.

  • Trey is sick, he takes things to another level. I know that he had a big influence from Jerry Garcia but he is more talented than the Grateful Dead because Phish is more talented than the Dead because Jerry Garcia is Dead. & Phish is very much alive & living. No disrespect

  • Please refrain from making comments.

  • what? Trey, nor phish for that matter, really take that much influence Jerry and the Dead, nor do they sound like them at all

  • ok well considering the fact the grateful dead were the first big free form improvisational "rock band", for a lack of a better term, phish would never exisist with out the dead's influence somewhere down the line

  • @mikes2121 I hear alot of similarities of Duane Allman in, let's say, Funky B*tch.. Trey probably has so many inspirations of his own, mixed with his own touch, and boom, you now have a legend!

  • HAHAHAHHA you people are HALARIOUS!

shut the fuck up you prick wutehvah!! you are the fag here, you don't see that the people you say your disgusted with is really what you are. we are all normal people your just a cock sucker getting fucked by the big dick of society! FUCK YOU. you the person who walks around with thier nose in the air saying and thinking your better than everyone, but you prollyy have a horrible life and don't know what to do besides bitch and complain.

    no balls!!!

  • neil is freakin insane

  • Thanks for posting. I won front row for this show by default. My brother's wife worked at a radio station in Milwaukee, and these tickets went unclaimed, so Friday as they closed the office (day of this show) she grabbed all 4 of them and we headed to Chicago to see this. The Down by the River is Neil & Trey pushing and pulling each other to places that Im sure no Farm Aid crowd ever experienced before. Awesome!!!!!!!

  • Boy, I miss them. Anyone know how the recent shows have been?

  • I was at Hampton. Unbelievable. Alot of older numbers meshed with new energy and fun. Check out the setlists and videos posted by silverchair. He did a nice job with. The end of Bowie day one was absurd. And the Slave they played was beautiful. Being there brought back alot of good memories!

  • I wish we could vote against the existence of morons who actually think that politicians are worthy of any sort of trust. How long will it take morons like this guy to realize that they are being treated as inferior, and that they will tell you what you need to hear to become the moronic activist you are. Obama = same as the old boss you lifeless non-thinker. Get a sense of who you are apart from what you think will make you relevant. Be a human not a media robot!!!

  • Thanks for the laugh. I'll think for myself thanks.

  • Well based on your post you believe that your thoughts should be shared by others. So you think for yourself but others should think as you do right? Who's more laughable, someone who uses generic phrases that they recycled because they are human zombies or someone capable of writing a fucking paragraph. By the way I'm not laughing at your pathetic state of mind I fear for a society filled with morons like you.

  • It'll be ok little buddy. Just stick with it! You'll grow out of this phase eventually!

But yeah! Human Zombies! Society of Morons! Lifeless non-thinkers! Blah Blah Blah! Yeah!

  • So what I can glean from your idiot comment is that people are incapable of group think, and that it has never happened. I really tire of you you tube activists. You really have the mental state of an impressionable 6th grader. If you want to say that tribes, villages, cities, states, and countries are not affected by popular thought over rational thought than honestly I don't see why I would care what you think. You are an obvious moron to anyone who cares more about truth then activists.

  • you sound like a real dbag. Get the fuck over yourself.

    [block user]

  • Why? Seriously, I'm a db because I challenge your media impeded mind? Yeah obviously I wasn't looking to become your friend. If someone raises an issue or put's a comment that shows that they are showing signs of the trillions of dollars spent to shape your idiot mind then I will call it out because unlike you I am honest and they can't touch me because I think for myself. You on the other hand imply that I'm proud, conceited, arrogant.... but why? Because I believe something other than you? :/

  • You, my friend, are the idiot. He says "vote obama" because he likes his politics more than the other candidates. If you're suggesting that the American form of government in general is the problem, how would you change it? Do you think any country on earth could possibly succeed if all of its citizens ran around saying "fuck the government! fuck the establishment! we're all media zombies!"

  • I'm perfectly fine with my life with obama president and apparently this guy is too, if you aren't then i guess it just sucks to be you, go write a blog that no one will read, smoke pot, listen to rage against the machine, but quit whining about it because nobody gives a shit.

  • I mean ya, this guy seems like a professional doucher, but don't bring rage against the machine and pot into this, they don't deserve to be associated with him, although the blog part is true

  • basically: neither you or I can change the american government. that is a fact. Either Obama or McCain was gonna win the election. That is also a fact. If that guy prefers Obama over McCain that doesn't make him a media zombie. Seriously, unless you have some brilliant idea for how to revolutionize our government you need to just shut the fuck up and stop ranting to a bunch of phish phans that don't give a fuck about you or your borderline retarded political views

  • sounds like your the youtube activist bud

  • allright all you trustafarians...there back...

why are they playing virginia? what about Boston for the World series parade in november????

  • theeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeee bbbbaaaaaaaaaccckkk!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Get a life.

  • whichever party will best ensure you and your neighbors have the ability to live in peace and prosperity is a matter of thinking about information, not a matter of fucking someones mom

  • How does that have anything to do with this?

  • quit hatin lemhurst

  • i love this song, does anybody have a recording of it?

  • Damn I used to, I had this version and on one box set It had Runaway Jim. One of my fav.

  • I love Neil Young, but to say that he added anything to this version of Runaway Jim is comical. The song was seconds away from ending before he jumped on stage. The subsequent 3 or so minutes of awkward ending aren't really anything too special.

  • simply put ask anyone in the audience at the time if Neil added anything to the song, and the answer will undoubtedly be 'HELL YEAH". Live music isn't supposed to be clean and concise like the album versions. it is intended to be raw and guttural. The musicians give all they can, and the audience gets a unique show. Neil and Phish gave the audience something no one else will get.

  • lolz neil and trey just feeding off eachother in the end is sum heavy psychedelic stuff.. noe what im sesszin? oh and btw this runaway is hoppins

  • Most people don't know that after this farm aid Neil tried to get Phish to tour as his band, like crazy horse.

  • @jba5922 I also heard that he Trey gave him the guitar ! Never saw anything to prove it though !

  • @richiemabie Nah, Neil is playing Old Reliable, Trey still uses it sometimes (he pulled it out when playing with Conan very recently and on TV with Oysterhead back when they played Oz is ever floating, it might be on YouTube if you want to look for it).

  • best part-6:49-6:58 the guitar goes from distorted to clear as a bell

  • trey is so much better than neil young at guitar

  • Trey might be "better", but let me know when Neil covers a Phish song.

  • word life, john cena

  • well said Spooky, WELL SAID

and I love trey to death btw

  • ...and Neil young is a far superior songwriter/lyricist which is a lot more important. Besides I Love Neil's playing. Trey is better "technically", but I prefer Neil Youngs style to a to a lot of guitar players are "technically" better.

  • This comment couldn't be anymore true. Phish are masters of their instruments and do write good songs, but Neil Young's ability to write is up their with The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Thumbs up for you, apparently some die hard Phish fans didn't appreciate this being said!

  • Arent' most guitarrist? That's not the appeal of Neil. It's not his accomplishment or skill at guitar but what he is able to emote out of it.

  • wretched

  • I miss these guys. I loved when trey use to talk to page with that cup.

  • Cool!

  • woo!!! :D

  • thanks for posting these!!
