This must have been a frozen hell on earth for all sides fighting in this terrible war never to return home. All of us can only comment on this now but none of us will truly know the pain and unbelievable suffering and death these Italian rumanian hungarian german and russian soldiers went through in that frozen hell. Only 2,000 civilians emerged alive in the rubble of stalingrad after the battle was over. remember all those who fought and died here on all sides during this terrible time.
during this offensive the the rumanian 3rd & 4th armies ; the hungarian 2nd army & the Italian 8th Army were for the most part annihilated with the russians then encircling stalingrad and the remaining German 6th army under General Paulus which finally surrendered feb 2nd 1943 totally exausted & out of ammunition with 91,000 prisioners. many italian troops & others were found frozen in their positions due to the extreme cold or ended up in the gulags of russia. Only a handful ever returned home
The Italian 8th Army were defending the stalingrad outer defence perimeter along with the rumanian & hungarian armies; it had 12 divisions & 4 legions within it; 970 guns, 420 mortars, 25,000 horses, 17,000 vehicles and about 100,000 men (the army had only about 40 light tanks at hand) It was poorly equipped to deal with russian T34 tanks & their infantry weapons were not suited for the extreme -40C cold & often jammed. as of the 20th of Nov 1942 the russians launched their offensive

I do a lot of research about the Itailians and the conclusion that I've come too is that the Italian Soldiers were very brave but their equipment was not too good and the Germans more or less betrayed them. Thanks for posting this on You Tube. Many people do not realize that the Italians contributed troops to the Eastern Front. I have done some reading about the Spanish Blue Division comprised of volunteers from the Spanish Army. Franco did not get sucked into a full alliance with the Germans and Italians but readily sent this unit to fight the Bolsheviks.

during this offensive the the rumanian 3rd & 4th armies ; the hungarian 2nd army & the Italian 8th Army were for the most part annihilated with the russians then encircling stalingrad and the remaining German 6th army under General Paulus which finally surrendered feb 2nd 1943 totally exausted & out of ammunition with 91,000 prisioners. many italian troops & others were found frozen in their positions due to the extreme cold or ended up in the gulags of russia. I do a lot of research about the Itailians and the conclusion that I've come too is that the Italian Soldiers were very brave but their equipment was not too good and the Germans more or less betrayed them. I have done some reading about the Spanish Blue Division comprised of volunteers from the Spanish Army. Franco did not get sucked into a full alliance with the Germans and Italians but readily sent this unit to fight the Bolsheviks.

I had a friend whose father was with a tank killer. He was lucky to escape with his life after it encountered a King Tiger. He pulled one of his crew out of the weapon by his hair. He had a Luger.
