Where I live, we don't have to go everyday to get the dose.

I, for example, get 6 day worth of methadone in advance and I take it at home.

It would suck though if I had to go every single day to the clinic... :/

I know for a fact methadone saves lives for those who are trying to get off of opiates. If one really wants to get off the drugs the methadone will allow one to lead a normal life without the cravings. As the dose is decreased the day will come when the cravings are over - when the dependency is gone it's a new life.

They know the risk, but also know that 'the system' will bale them out when they can't handle the repercussions. I wasn't a threat to society. When I wanted to quit, I didn't go whining to the state to help me. I didn't expect the NHS to bail me out! In those days little was known about drug dependency and, while I will still struggle to understand the attraction of heroin etc, I will try to be less judgemental of it's victims.

@Mistermopar i was trying to find your name and i just decided to come back here and make my comment. i use the methadone foe both as i said for my addiction and pain management. i have endometriosis, which i was born with. i will not lie. my drug use was both physical and psychological. i made a few other problems i had worse with my drug use. i don't do a lot of things that i did before i got on methadone.the only pain in the ass is driving 36 miles round trip everyday to nthe clinic.

@Mistermopar sorry for the types! i'm thinking of lowering my dose, however, to see how i feel. i had surgery for my endo, and when they got in there it was bad. that stuff was everywhere. now the methadone does not control all my pain, but i have to learn to take some pain. enough to be able to manage living. recovery is hard. i am a smoker as well, so when you said that you quit i was curious as to what helped you do that. any advice would be great. i'm 36, & a 22 year cig addiction.

thats not actually true. after being on methadone and clean (even from drinking) for a cople months you can get take home bottles. starting with weekends then upto 6 a week. if they stay clean and participate in treatment. clinics also do counciling and group therapy. each person has a counciler that they can talk to. check clinics to make sure they have a good rep. if you have a discovery house in your area I can vouch for them. ask pateints that have stayed clean only for true feedback.

In my opinion it is not wise to let patients take bupernorphine away from the chemist. In Australia there is a black market for bupernorphine, IV heroin users will most often inject bupernorphine if they can take it unsupervised and I have seen so many terrible ulcers and abscesses result from this. In my opinion the best treatment for heroin users is diamorphine. Prescription diamorphine has far fewer drawbacks than either methadone or bupernorphine.

What the lady in the video said is not true, after time and several clean UA's you can receive up to 28 doses of take home methadone. This was in Minnesota and in Massachusetts for example you may get up to 6 does for take home so it may vary from state to state but nothing like the lady in the video said of never having a take home dose and having to go to the methadone clinic on a daily basis is only true for around the first 60 days...

In my experience (15yrs IV heroin addiction), methadone at its best, is a harm reduction measure. 3% success rate in the UK! If you are on methadone, and able to reduce to a level that enables you to come off using Subies (30-40ml), that's by far the better option.

methadone works...the clinics however want your buisness and that is the bottom line...no money no drugs...after being on meth for 20+ years I have been of since 1998...I relapsed with heroin after not taking any for 20 years.I can only say as a former patient of the clinics and knowing counslers who have worked there as well as nurses they can control you with this drug. The stigma attached to this can also ruin you if your employer were to find out you are a patient. Very frustrating!!!

Back in early 2004 my primary care physician began giving me methadone for two slipped disks, a herniated disk, and degenerative arthritis in my spine; I currently take 140 mgs. of Methadone a day with up to 4 Percacets for break through pain. Earlier this year (2009) when my new doctor attempted to take me off Methadone, my disabilities advocate stepped in and filed an injunction against him, as well as a civil suit against the clinic.  Methadone works on many levels, especially for pain.

I injured myself in Nov. 05, and was on oxy for some time. Then, I was put on Methadone. I don't like either, but at least on the methadone I can function, and mostly remember things. On oxycontin I went through many days at a time that I don't remember. I thought the oxy did better pain control, but am told the pain was still there I just don't remember it. And yes, there is a stigma attached to taking any drug, even if legally prescribed. I would like to be drug free.

Methadone treatment, I think, is the wrong way to go. I overcame DXM, Klonopin, and Seroquel addiction cold turkey. Of course they have no relation to heroin. I've seen heroin addicts on methadone treatment... the chances are slim, they just really are... we have to keep heroin addicts in in-patient rehabs, it's the only way and all you heroin addicts agree with me deep inside; only if you truly believe you wish to quit.

The biggest problem with choosing MMT is not going to the clinic everyday, the problem is that it is a LETHAL DRUG!! My son went to a licensed, professional clinic and died on Day 5 from methadone toxicity even though he had complained of adverse effects every single day. He had a clean toxicology report . Observe someone on methadone leading a "functional" life -- they are lethargic to the point of risking other people's lives. Methadone is NOT the answer for anyone for any reason!!

I take this VERY seriously as I've been on methadone now for just over five years. Just like a person needs insulin for diabetes, I need methadone for my opiate addiction. Just like diabetes is real, my addiction is a real. I've been stable for years now at the same dosage.

O.K. maybe more than a few days. the withdrawals reaches it's peek in 72hrs. then it will taper off. 7 days at the most. I wouldn't hardly compare methadone to insulin, you don't need methadone to stay alive. I've been a heroin addict for 14 years, been on methadone several times. Clinic patients do NOT have to attend the clinic every day. Once they have been on the clinic for 3 months they can begin earning take home doses--something the bupe prescribers never seem to mention. I go to the clinic once per month for a few minutes and that is it--no problems.

50mg is certainly NOT a "high dose", but she IS correct that patients over about 60mgs of methadone usually do not do well on bupe.

Been in Florida my entire life. Port St. Lucie for 26 years, and 2 years now in Belleview-Ocala. They've had very little problem with my dosage. According to a nurse I asked about one month ago at my current Ocala clinic, the average dose for people who've been there for at least six months is 120mgs. I hate hearing about a 'maximum'. Everybody has a different metabolism concerning methadone.
