  • Denman was the horse to beat in 2008, I agree. Not sure what the 3-1 head to head record has to do with who is the better horse. Considering KS fell in 2010, and Denman lost out to Imperial Commander. 2011 GC both lost out to Long Run, surely that doesn't count. Andy Murray has a better head to head (8-6 to Murray) over Roger Federer. Does that make majorless Murray a better player than 16 time Grand slam winner Rog? Denman VS Kauto Star 1-1 is a more accurate.

  • Denman couldn't even beat Diamond Harry at the Hennessey in 2010. Kauto is still going strong, and beating horses half his age(Long Run) comfortably winning grade 1 races.I was a Denman fan, and yes, he was a great horse.

  • @KingKauto5 Kauto star is a fantastic horse no doubt, but your comment on denman in his henessey in 2010 is unfair,in 2009 denman gave allmost 2 stone to top class seasoned chasers in the henessey and still won, will we see a performance like that again i doubt it . in 2010 he was 2nd in gold cup when kauto fell. and this race you have just seen his staying power was too strong for kauto. denman has beaten kauto 3-1 in cheltenham, that makes denman the best in my opionion.

  • @KingKauto5 can you not remember the weight difference that day? any horse would have been beaten by diamond harry that day with thise weights

  • The Gold cup will not the same without Denman this year, fantastic animal

  • Great race and an even better commentary.

  • Hoiles commentary that day was class!

  • Iii never forget this gold cup, most people i met said kauto star would win,i knew denman would pull it off,an my god did he do it in style. This 2008 gold cup was after all the true test off both,as they were in their prime an kauto star got found out by a superior horse. As richard hoiles said denman pounded kauto star into submission.Big strong relentless galloper thats what i loved about denman,an second 3 times after, only for his heart problems he would have won another gold cup.

  • without doubt the single best gold cup performace i have ever seen from a horse with the excetion of arkle.denman destroyed kauto star that day.what a great horse he was an a great ride from sam thomas.happy retirement denman you were the best ive seen for a long time.

  • Denman had everything behind off the bridle from miles out in this even Kauto Star. You will never see another Gold Cup with so many jockeys pushing and shoving so far out.

Remarkable performance we won't see his like again which kills me.

  • The answer is Denman! Penman won the gold cup, simply awesome, couldnt agree more with mrconnolly25 £30 a month for below average coverage of racing when you have channel 4 on a Saturday covering the main races, how come atr don't charge a fee yet racing uk do, they clearly aren't racing people just business people, arses. Team Denman!!

  • Where the hell is footage of Denman's Hennessy wins gone? Channel 4's version was brilliant much better than RUKTV.Why would the greedy bastards rob us of such history.A petition needs starting to stop these greedy fuckers dictating what we can and can't watch,i'd sign for sure.

  • such a pity that he cant go in this years gold cup.... would have been the perfect last match up between himself and kauto! ah well this video just what he was like at his prime. Have a good retirement old legend

  • Denman...best chaser of the past 50 years!!!

  • @RamWhamBam emmmm...if Denman looks next door he will see the best chaser of the last 50 years

  • @dislandman1 nonsense, check out their gold cup performances and see who has the best record. check out harry findlay video for the 2008 gold cup post race interview

  • @RamWhamBam The same next door neighbour who has finished behind Denman on 3 out of the 4 times theyve met. and it would have been 4-0 Denman had he not had the heart issue, which allowed KS to beat him in 09. Either way Arkle, Mill House, Flyingbolt, Red Rum and Dawn Run all rank above Kauto Star.

  • As many times as I see this film Denman gets better and better yes their is Kauto, Dessie, Rummy in my era but this boy was a talent who had buckets of bottle thank goodness we have this facilty to continue watching a icon god bless you in your retirement buddy

  • Simply the best enjoy your retirement TANK

  • the answer is denman! still brings a tear to my eye, so sad about his retirement

  • Amazing, almost in tears every time. Talk about the old fashion chaser we all love. Fuck these smooth travelling French imports. When Richard hoiles said " denmans got him at it" I remember being at Cheltenham that day as the monger of doom and all my mates saying he's won easy and I couldn't watch! Proper NH racing at it's best

  • Still send chills down my spine every time.

  • Never seen a horse like him! This is why I love horse racing. Very sad to hear about his retirement but he owes nothing to anyone. I will still wear my denman scarf to many cheltenhams to come. Thank the Tank for the memories!

  • what a perormance,to win another henessy with top weight after running this race was amazing ,enjoy your retirement tank ... thanks for the memories

  • Denman, you briefly made me a rich man

  • denman mate , your going to be missed .

  • Denman, a true great! Love both denners and kauto but, always backed denman over kauto.. It was just sentimental feelings. But I do hope kauto has one over again on long run at the king George for the tank. A true great. I cried a tear when I found out about denmans retirement and read the same article about his historic wins 8 times on the bbc website. A true great never to be forgotten. The people's champion. I sincerely hope he has a long and happy retirement. You will be missed old boy.

  • what a race

  • Am not afraid to say I wept tonight. Happy that Denman will retire healthy and happy but devastated to hear about his retirement. This marvel, a giant of a horse still had a big win in him and by all accounts was as fresh as a daisy. I have never admired a horse as much as The Tank and National Hunt racing will be a poorer place without him. Thank you for all the happy times Denman.

  • @damoose78 Great comment. same here also.

  • @r9046 i totally agree, this was phenomenal performance by the Tank!

  • Thought this was the deciding race between Denman and Kauto, and the Tank prevailed. The other races they met, circumstances differed for both horses - here they were both primed to and at their best and Kauto was just found out by a 'remorseless' Denman

  • @r9046

i would agree 2008 was the defining race as the close starting prices of 10/11 and 9/4 indicate. dont get me wrong kauto would beat denman doing handstands round kempton but in 2008 denman was simply unbeatable and if it werent for his heart issues the best would have been yet to come.

  • probably more the peoples horse than kauto. hope he has a great life now. brought joy to millions. true warrior, will never forget these moments.

  • Can't believe how gutted i am that Denman has been retired. At least we have youtube to relive his best moments.Great horse sad but glad he will enjoy his retirement a true horse of the people

  • happy retirement tank- he was an awesome horse. his gold victory was the best perfomance i have ever seen. a pure demolition job. i doubt i will see his like again

  • Enjoy your retirement sweet prince.

We love you tank, people's champion <3

  • Devestated! What a horse. Long live the king

  • Absolute hero. Enjoy your retirement sir.

  • Get Up The Tank. There is a few great moments in life, first pint, first time you have sex, then that moment when Denman turns for home. My fave horse behind Dessie. He is keeping Kauto company until the end of the season then he can live out the rest of his days in peace. Happy Retirement big lad. P.S I still think you were way better than Kauto Star.

  • thank you Denman..all the best!! may you gorge yourself on Carrots and have a ball at stud

  • @8arr0n I doubt he'll have a ball at stud, he lacks, er, the balls! :) But yes, I hope he has a long and enjoyable retirement. :)

  • Well earned rest old boy!

  • Amazing i came on here hoping to be the first to comment on the retirement of the brilliant denman.....already comments on here says it all......this horse will be missed more than any other in training..... irish bred...bold front running..proper jumper . And one things for sure we will still be talking about denman in 30 years time....TANKS for the memories old boy.

  • Denman - a true true Gold Cup Legend - enjoy the long grass!

  • Retired this morning due to a small tendon injury :(

  • Happy retirement Denman!

  • This is why I sometimes really dislike this particular sport.. Yes it was a brilliant victory by a good horse but am I the only person here thinking of the horse? He was exhausted two fences out and the stupid jockey still draws the whip on him.. To me that is just cruel.. The horse is exhausted so therefore he surely has no more to give. Denman was breathing really hard after he had finished and i'm not surprised. Poor animal...

  • @Emilybacon91 it's a distance race - ever seen an elite athlete not be tired at the end of a distance race? It's all about guts and finding that little bit extra when you feel knackered. He was a champion.

  • @icethebreak I'm not disputing the fact that he wasn't a champion, i fully agree he was a champion, but what was annoying me was the fact that he was exhausted and the jockey was still smacking him with the whip, if he needed more he could have found that on his own, you dont see elite athletes smacking themselves to find more.. but he didnt need more anyway he was way infront..

  • best ive ever seen. denman 3-1kauto

  • I remember this like it was yesturday, my grandad told me and my mom to put all of our money on kauto star and i told him that denman would beat him and as we all know he did, also had our vic to beat kauto star a few weeks later, however i did have kauto star to beat long run last saturday

  • How good is the commentary by the way.

  • @jnorri01 way better than the american boring commentators

  • Come on dont hate on Sam Thomas for this ride, remember he was a very young jockey at this ride, this was his big moment, his big break, imagine his excitement after the 3rd last when he kicks him on. Best performance i have seen, will never forget this!

  • The insane gallop set by Denman in this race reminds me the similar 1986 pace set by Dawn Run.She was headed after the 2nd last and got up late but I'd say she was up against a far more talented field with Wayward Lad , Forgive and Forget and don't forget Run and Skip. Having said that, Kauto Star was off-form this day but my opinion is that his top form would have got him as near to Denman as Wayward Lad was to Dawn Run, even though Denman is visibly tying up near the post -as so was the mare!

  • @alipitogen How was Kauto Star off form, he was just beaten by a better horse, and Denman would have continued to dish out beating after beating to KS, had it not been for the heart issue, and even still Denman has a 3-1 superior head record.

Both are great horses but both at there best in the Gold Cup Denman wins every single time, everyone knows that.

  • Comment removed

  • Also if there was any doubt 3-1 denman. Winninggggggggggg!!!!

  • Never thought I'd agree with a scotman but never a truer word spoken. When denman won his 2nd hennessey I was almost crying. Brave would be an understatment. Quite simply the best chaser I've ever seen.

  • @MrConnolly25 couldn't agree with you more, i think there is a fine line between when the jockeys push on just that little bit more or to accept that he's winning by at least 10 lengths, sit still and ease up on him abit! Because it's clear he was going to win; the others were obviously not going to catch him.

  • The tanks finest hour,it still makes the hairs on my neck stand up whenever I see these two old warriors go at it

  • denman is incredible but i'm not sure what sam thomas is doing thrashing about tho :/

  • @katherinepennels123 Would love to know why thomas was so hard on Denman up the hill the race was all over he could have hand ridden him to the line as Denman didn't appear to be pulling up just looked knackered i thought it was slightly harsh as thomas appeared to hit the horse 10 times after the last!!

  • This was a perfect ride by Sam Thomas - perfection!

  • Denman is a fantastic horse.

Have noticed however that people who love Denman seem to have it in for KS - they also all seem to be the sad bastards up my local pub.

  • @jamiekbris i know what ya mean kauto is my favourite horse ever but i like denman hes a galloping machine he just doesnt stop running

  • @jamiekbris Real racing fans love them both. Of course we have our favourites but we should feel lucky we have had the pleasure of both. Kauto is very classy but Denman is an old fashioned warrior. We need to make the most of them as they can't have many races left in them.

  • Best commentary you've ever heard. This is thrilling.

  • As much as this was a great performance. Saying KS only won because Denmans Heart problem is unfair. KS Jumped rubbish on this day and can jump at a fast pace as proved last month. 2009 commentry said when turning for home "ITS KAUTO STAR ALONGSIDE DENMAN, THIS IS THE RACE WE WANTED 12 MONTHS AGO, BUT ITS A DIFFERENT STORY TODAY, KAUTO STAR PULLS 10 OR 12 LENGTHS CLEAR OF DENMAN, THIS IS THE CHAMPION, KAUTO STAR CANTERS HOME" . The 2008 Denman and 2009 KS would have been the race we all wanted!

  • The best commentary ever!

    Relentless, Remorseless...

  • Magnificent Commentry

  • The Tank in his finest hour! r.i.p Exotic Dancer

  • Comment removed

  • ......."Driven out!...Relentless!...Remorseless!...And POUNDS Kauto Star into submission...The answer is DENMAN....DENMAN won The Gold Cup"!

  • demolition job

  • 6.55 to 7.05 Have you ever seen a greater sight than that?

  • @theimmortalbobby

magnificent- the tank pouring it on and getting his rivals hard at it in behind. awesome!!!!!!

  • @theimmortalbobby u should look up the 2011 gold cup theres a fantastic shot of denman and kauto beside each other for the lead before long run caught them

  • Come on The Tank! This time tomorrow Denman will be the champ once more.

  • ...I will declare here and now....Denman will regain the Gold Cup at the 2011 Festival!...

  • ......I will declare here and now....Denman will regain the Gold Cup at the 2011 Festival!...

  • denman a legend my fav chaser of all time,i will never forget his 2008 demolition job.

  • This brings a tear to the eye, when I was watching this live I was astounded at the pace Denman went at on the second circuit and the massive jumps he put in pure amazing. This race did after all break his heart leading to an irregular heartbeat such a brave horse, a massive raw beast.

  • @kevclare YOU ARE right mate..the only time kauto star beat him was when he had a heart problem....for me denman is the gold cup horse!! 1 win and 3 seconds is as good as 4 wins for me :)

  • @kevclare he was born with an irregular heartbeart, efforts like this may have brought it on sooner, but sooner or later it was going to affect him. your right this was an amazing effort, even the great Kauto Star could not live with Denmans relentless gallop.

  • @kevclare why can't a horse have a pacemaker?

  • @kevclare He was born with an irregular heartbeat, so this race didnt cause it. Though it probably agrevated the problem

  • Denman has had a breathing operation before this years renewal so holds every chance. He doesn't know he's getting any older plus he goes brilliantly fresh. What a Beast of an animal he is. He never gives up and that's why we love him.

  • There's life in the old dog yet....

  • When he got Ruby to pull his whip on Kauto i knew he was going to win. Wonderful day and two wonderful horses. They will both be missed when they retire. It would be amazing if either could win the Gold Cup again

  • Who didn`t like this??It is one of the greatest N.H.races of all time.Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

  • an absolutely awesome performance of jumping and galloping. cant believe that was almoost 3 years ago now.

i remember micky fitzgerald recalling how when denman took up the running with a circuit to go he was happy to let denman go on as if he tried to go that pace his mount (neptune collognes) wouldnt finish the race. .

i think the sheer pace denman is going at is illustared by how quickly the field gets strung out after he takes up the running.

  • '' Denman the destroyer '' Absolutely love that. What a horse...

  • Denman ran a blinder in the Hennesy.

If he's anywhere near his best he'll win the the Gold Cup.

The old boy isn't finished yet you young pups!!!

  • denmen is shocking haha

  • @scotty2031992 You fucking idiot. Denman is a quality quality horse. Run along and start puberty....

  • Stop fighting people, just admire these amazing horses and be glad you get the prvilidge of seeing them race. (especially Denman! I fucking love you!)

  • @MrJonbadger you are right Jon,Denman is a fuckin legend whether he wins or not!

  • I hope he wins - but what a privilege to see three great horses such as Denman, Kauto Star and Imperial Commander all going head-to-head, with two young pretenders of real quality, Long Run and Diamond harry, waiting in the wings...

  • Denman will win the 2011 Gold cup. I wouldn't have said that last 2 years because denman had excuses, his latest 2nd was very impressive and he was very close to his personal best, Yes folks, Denman is back, ignore him at your financial peril..

  • mm so Denman was stuffed 151/4L by an up and coming second season youngster, that was getting a whopping 2 stone plus from him, who actually on his own merit is a very very good horse, i dont think that was a bad performance, i honestly dont know what some people expect from these horses! And if they care to look at Denmans novice season as a 6yrld, they would find its outstanding, unbeaten in 5 races and same age same weight against Diamond Harry no contest! Long run K/G win that was impressive

  • Gavin,You are a prick! When you say Denman is not that good,do you mean now or then??This was one of the greatest performances ever in a Gold Cup.I repeat you are a prick!

  • If Diamond Harry wins the GC this year it will prove that Denman was on the Hennessy day as good as ever. I think off level weights only a few horses beat Denman, but never off level weights would a horse destroy him.

  • @Jamie2462A not sure if Diamond harry likes Chelt, not to say hes got a chance, would have loved to see him in the lexues chase at christmas.think that imperial will keep his GC crown this year.

  • Dont write Denman off yet!

  • highest quality Gold Cup in my lifetime. Denman was never quite the same horse again

  • @addyginsh i agree denman was a monster before his heart problem, some people dont seem to understand what the horse has been through, he will never let himself completely down like he use to, they think horses are stupid but their not, he knows when it hurts and he wont push through that pain barrier again and i dont blame him, name me one human athlete thats come back after a serious heart problem like he has! Don`t rule him out of the gold cup, he`s not a right off just yet!

  • @desomationxmatt would`nt it be great if he could do it, all in my house will be rooting for him, but thats the heart ruling the head if im honest!

  • people forget that that was probablyneptune collonges greatest run!! he was colossal!

  • And Un twords the line...........Denman by a distance from arkle, dessie kauto star nd the rest knowhere =P

  • @gavincollins100 WAKE UP...Denman would not have got Arkle off the bridle.

His first Gold Cup win the 3rd & 4th, both a distance behind, had been competitive in the previous Gold Cup. His other wins he never broke sweat winning by nigh a distance each time. He won 2 Hennesseys under 12st 7lb & only narrowly failed to concede 35lb to future Gold Cup runner up & 3rd Stalbridge Colonist & winner, What A Myth, unlike Denman who was comprehensively crushed by babies 16l conceding 28lb.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1

To boot, he certainly would not have seen which way the likes of Dessie, One Man or Kauto went at a flat track like Kempton, the old plodder!! Crushed by the brilliant Imperial Commander last year & Kauto the previous, expect the same this year. Imperial Commander will lead them all home again probably from Burton Point.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 You idiot? Kauto Star and Denman on there day are the better horses. Imperial will not win the Gold Cup this year. He ducked Kauto at Kempton in the King George because of the demolition job he receieved last time round. Denman and Kauto are the best chasers since Dessie... Imperial Commander don't make Me laugh!

  • @gavincollins100 LMFAO!!! Denman is a good horse, but not that good! People raved about his recent HGC DEFEAT!! Incredible...the horse was stuffed 15 1/4l by a horse completing only his THIRD ever chase!! Had the weights been levels, at face value, Denman, an experienced & proven campaigner, would have only won by 6l. Those 6l will easily be made up by Diamond Harry with natural improvement, within a run or two.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 You are a prick! When you say Denman is not that good,do you mean now or then??This was one of the greatest performances ever in a Gold Cup.I repeat you are a prick!

  • Remember the track around Kempton changed a little a few years back. Also check the ground standard when comparing times.

One man's ground was good to firm. Kauto has never had better than good to soft. So i would suggest Kauto performed a little better.

  • dessie the horse that had everything, speed, staying power, jumped like a stag very clever and most of all determination, sheer guts got him home in the gold cup that day i`ll never forget it!

  • @desomationxmatt Desert Orchid was a great horse but he would be no match for Denman, Dessie beat run of the mill handicappers conceeding weight he never once faced a challenge like Denman did on staturday, nor did he beat Grade 1 winners like What a Friend conceeding 22 pounds..Kauto Star is good but Denman is better and beat and on song Kauto Star in 08, were as Kauto Star beat a half fit Denman in 09, even the bookies knew it 7/1 for the defending champion, At his best Denman isbetter than KS

  • @MANUTD4LIFE171 i am totally with you on denman my favourite race horse of this era! but overall dessie was exceptional he won on any ground from 2 miles to 3miles plus, giving weight away! he had so much speed not even a 2mile specialised panto prince could beat him conceding weight, and then he would go on to win 3mile chases in the same season. simon sherwood dessert orchid unstoppable! but thats just my oppinion.

  • @MANUTD4LIFE171 What a crock of shite you spout!!! Dessie beat The Fellow (a dual King George, Gold Cup winner/place) by nearly a distance in his last King George win with the second a twice GC runner up Toby Tobias beaten 12l. He also slammed Gold cup winner Charter Party 12l at Cheltenham. He hammered Forgive & Forget, Wayward Lad (triple King George/pipped by Dawn Run Gold Cup) & a host of others in his first & regulary beat grade one Kildimo. You spout shite! Denman?? lmao!

  • @MANUTD4LIFE171

Dessie beat "run of the mill handicappers"? LMAO!!! Delius, Yahoo, Charter Party, Barnbrook Again, Seagram, Cavvies Clown, Forgive & Forget, Wayward Lad, Bolands Cross, Sabin Du Loir, The Fellow, Toby Tobias, Panto Prince, Very Promising, See You Then, Vodkatini, Rollajoint, Pegwell Bay, RhymeNReason, Stearsby, Door Latch, Charcoal Wally, Burrough Hill Lad, Strands Of Gold, Jim Thorpe, Golden Friend, Nick The Brief etc.

His victims read like the who's who of 80's racing!

  • Ooops, it should now read "Denman only ONE win from his last 8 (EIGHT) races" - that sure is a better record of a 14 time Grade One winner, a 4 time King George winner and a 2 time Gold Cup winner............................................not.

  • @cmcgrath10 You may all give cmc grief but at least like me he can back up what he says with facts & not just dumb emotions!!!! Kauto easily has by far greater class than Denman. Certain tracks suit Denman better but essentially Kauto is different league. Denman edged out an off song Kauto in one Gold Cup & was slammed by Kauto when he was off song in another. The King George has always proved one thing that all true class horses have...SPEED!!!! Kempton does not suit plodders like Denman!

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 By the way losing by more than 5 lengths doesnt count as edged out. Denman as raped Kauto in 2 occasions in the Gold Cup, Last year just losing out to Imperial and in 2008 when he absolutely smashed him. Denman races the handicaps like Arkle used to do, Kauto is vastly vastly overrated....

  • @ASupremeOwl Just losing out....lmao!! Being outpaced by seven lengths is hardly just losing out. All being well he will get another view of Imperials backside again!

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 yes it was aimed at you, calling denman a plodder is unforgiveable, cart horses plod and if thats the case what was k/s and the rest of them that day? and even 2yrs later his and i/c cruising speed (or should i say plod) had the speed horse on the deck! get real mate national hunt is not about flouncing around having things all your own way, its about galloping, jumping fences and out staying your opposition, denman does just that!

  • @desomationxmatt Cheltenham & Newbury suit Denman because they are galloping tracks & he is a relentless galloper. I have no doubt he'd like Haydock & Wetherby too. Kauto Star for me is by far the better of the two. His second Gold Cup win was the most impressive. However Denman would struggle at Kempton as he lacks the speed that class horses have....leading around a dour track like Cheltenham is one thing, doing the same on a speed track like Kempton is another....chalk & cheese.

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 well you are entitled to your opinion and i understand what you are saying about the courses for horses, but i dont base class on speed, not in national hunt racing, for me its about jumping, staying and weight carrying but its like i said thats just my opinion! your clearly a very nice guy who knows what he`s talking about and i liked how you reeled off all those wonderful names of old,it promted me to check dessie out. I was working for ladbrokes when he reigned and he made

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 my heart pound every time i saw him race , (by the way i am a female) i feel the same for denman he so courageous he trys so hard to win! Putting that aside k/s costing 400 thousand euros next to denmans 120 thousand i know which one i would call value for money!

  • Comment removed

  • @desomationxmatt A dream King George line up for me would be Arkle, Desert Orchid, One Man, Captain Christie, Pendil, Kauto Star, Best Mate, Burrough Hill Lad, See More Business, The Fellow, Wayward Lad & Silver Buck. What a race!!!!

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 and the winner would be? i read your comment about one man being 6 seconds quicker than k/s 2009 win, kinda puts things into perspect and how good those old horses really were! most of them ran as much if not more times in one season than k/s or denman put together (thats not the horses fault) they just dont make them like they use to!

  • @desomationxmatt

"On the turn for home Desert Orchid still heads them off with a whole host of horses queueing up behind led by Kauto Star...3 out Dessie takes off from outside the wings, Kauto tries to match him & he's down. It's Desert Orchid from One Man & Arkle with Captain Christy moving menacingly..2 out Dessie pings it with Arkle, Taffe looking confident, One Man & Captain Christy Pendil & Best Mate staying on the rest just behind as they approach the last in this thriller......"

  • @desomationxmatt Dessie digging deep ears pricked flies the last with Arkle who is now being ridden...on the run for home Dessie fighting all the way mighty Arkle looms up & is hard ridden, Dessie & Arkle being roared home Captain Christy staying on very well Dessie, Arkle ding dong battle neck & neck, Captain Christy rallying......Dessie Arkle nothing in it....it's a photo.....what a race!!! :o)

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 A dead heat then, i`ll settle for that, i dont think peter o`sullivan could of called it better himself! i know you say the course and ground was in one mans favour, but he did win unchallenged as did kauto, but had it been nip and tuck to the line with a couple of fences to be jumped it would have been game over for kauto, he has a long lopping stride and does`nt seem to be able to put in a short one hence he crashes through them and to be fair the fences are knowhere near

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 as stiff as they use to be, especially at cheltenham, if they were i dont think kauto would have two gold cups under his belt, or four king georges, they have it a lot easier these days!

  • @desomationxmatt True but it is nice to see the horses come back safely. I agree re. next years Gold cup although I think Imperial Commander, who I was on last year, is a bit special around there....all being well he should again easily have the measure them. I have never really warmed to either Denman or Kauto in the same way I did to say for the likes of Desert Orchid, Red Rum, Monksfield, Double Trigger or Persian Punch. I appreciate they are very good horses but I am not a fan of either.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 i agree i think i/c will do it again, he loves the course and i think he had a bit in hand when he won it this year, he is a very good horse in the prime of his life and will be very hard to beat! May be a silly question, do you go racing?

  • @desomationxmatt I visit local point to points occasionally. I rarely have the time to visit the big meetings, although I plan to visit Cheltenham one year! I am looking forward to the King George this year. I think it will be a shame if Kauto beats Dessies record. I sincerely believe Dessie beat far better horses & would have jumped Kauto into the ground, travelling that bit faster than anything he has ever met before. Seems only Long Run, Burton Port & Riverside Theartre offer any threat.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 lets hope the hustling of mcoy unerves kauto, if it does he will fall! as for dessie if it were not for a certain beau ranger! i think he would have had five straight wins in the race himself he was the best horse racing will ever see (dare i say it) even better than arkle. i go to newbury when i can, ive seen denman (i know he`s not your cup of tea) and master minded a couple of times both magnifacent looking animals, denman so proud and majestic and m/m so so handsome

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 and very laid back, of the two you would take him home. ive been to the festival once and never again! too many people, not enough time between races, nightmare getting home, i wont go on. anyway have a great xmas and enjoy the racing, i will bye.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 Another ridiculous comment, As much as I love Dessie and remember backing him he was more of a gritty fighter rather than a talented jumper like Kauto the race would be far far closer than people imagine and I'd say Kauto would just pip it. As for Imperial winning the gold cup, I hope you lump on because 2010 was a fluke. Kauto and Denman are by far the greater horses... When as Imperial ever gave weight away to retain an Hennessy? And Kauto's record speaks for itself. Jog on

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 Imperial Commander at Kempton as managed to lose by 72L and 64L to Kauto Star. Surely a record for an horse 'in the same league as Kauto'

  • @ASupremeOwl He nearly fell in one of them twice! Imperial Commander easily had KS held in the 2010 Gold Cup when he gave his true running so if you want to take two results where a horse clearly didn't give his running then thats upto you!! At Cheltenham IC is a far better horse as was proven.

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 Kauto Star ran his true running even though he was never travelling that good and ended up falling. KS will win the KG as easily as he usually does and turn up at Cheltenham and put IC in his place...

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 As years go by and when Kauto Star and Denman retire they will be remembered alot more than Imperial Commander. IC will not win the GC this year, It will be an outsider or Kauto Star...

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 The difference between KS and IC is that Kauto isnt a Cheltenham specialist, I'd say its his least favourite track but hes a dual Gold Cup winner. The only track IC seems to win at is Cheltenham thats the difference. KS Kempton specialist, Cheltenham GC winner. He can win just about everywhere because the talent difference between KS and IC is huge IMO...

  • @foriamonlyahorse1 As for Denman he is obviously the Dessie of his day. Not as good as Dessie but I cant think of an horse since Dessie who as give so much weight away in handicaps and won. IC can't do that and neither can KS IMO as talented as He is. Denman and KS are the best of there generation just face it....

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 did I.Qs just drop a level! please correct me if im wrong but did`nt that plodder absolutely trounce a 14 times (YAWN YAWN YAWN) grade 1 winner, who has never had the misfortune to come up against the likes of dessie or any of the horses you fore mentioned, because if he had lets face it he would have had his colours lowered many times! round kempton or sandown he would not have seen which way dessie went! the same as denman would not have coped with the mighty arkle!

  • @desomationxmatt WTF are you on about? Are you sure that comment is aimed at me?

My personal beliefs are this. Kempton: Dessie was King. He'd have had Kauto over-reaching & making mistakes as soon as he starting winding up the already relentless gallop on that final turn. Kauto is great but fragile & needs it all his own way...when he does, he is utterly quite brilliant!

Denman a very stout stayer with alot of class but one paced...bit like Seemorebuisness but without the gears.

  • @foriamonlyahorse11 if you want speed watch the flat racing, if you want endurance and brilliance watch national hunt. At least we agree on one thing dessie was just simply the best!

  • @desomationxmatt You are missing the point. To win at a flat track (I mean a level track with no undulations NH or 'flat racing') you need to have a high cruising speed to lay handy. Classy horses tend to have a high cruising speed thus classier horses excell at tracks like Kempton (NH) or York (flat). Hence why Desert Orchid, One Man & Kauto Star who all had the right mix of class & stamina excel at Kempton. Denman, is a top class relentless galloper but very one paced.

  • honestly its laughable he just does`nt get it! win or loose 2day denman has nothing to prove i just want to see him get round safe and sound on his way to next years gold cup! GOOD LUCK DENMAN!

  • oh dear god help us all, i see the nasty little spot is back! wonder what happened to him! perhaps he broke his little jockey chair trying to get kauto passed denman! honestly though he`s like one of those long playing records the very very boring ones, he`s so rapped up in himself he does`nt get sarcasm, wonder why kauto is`nt in the hennessey! maybe its just not good enough for him, not worth enough money, or could it just be that he does`nt want to see the back end of denman again!
