This is the point I like to make when people talk of how much we have to pay for smokers and their health problems. Even if they had never smoked a single cigarette in their life, they still might have developed another costly disease. Perhaps the inevitable health problems associated with old age are even costlier, and smokers are doing us a favour by dying young. Again, in the end, it's simply a matter of choice.

But does bad for you biologically mean it's bad for you in general? It's all a matter of perspective -- of personal choice. We each have a responsibility to choose what matters to us in life. If some want to find pleasure in smoking, that is their right. It may make you die younger and in an unpleasant way, but we're not immortal and dying is an unpleasant process anyway. You can smoke, suffer from lung cancer and die young, or live old and suffer from many non-smoking diseases.

The dangers of smoking are greatly exaggerate. The anti-smoking lobby is as guilty as much propaganda and faulty, biased science as their opponents. Certain key facts are often overlooked: while most victims of lung cancer are smokers, most smokers will not develop lung cancer (other health issues are more likely), and Japan, which has more smokers than the U.S, has less "smoking related" deaths. However, no one in their right mind would deny smoking is dangerous.
