town here had a GMC dumptruck about that year. had a big V6 gasoline motor. that motor would really talk when pulling 7 tons of gravel up the quarry hill. It ran kinda roungh until it spit the muffler off and could breath again. It just wasnt a heavy enough truck for what they wanted to do with it.
Start with a long handled screwdriver, putty knife and a REALLY good pressure washer. Once scraped, soak heavy stuff with Easy-Off oven cleaner. WEAR A MASK! Gloves and eye protection are highly recommended. It's nasty stuff. Blast it and let it dry. Scrape and Easy-off the spots you missed. Blast it again, let dry. Soak EVERYTHING with with Castrol Super Clean (or equivalent) Blast it again. Now assess and prioritize.

I had two gmc trucks one was a dump truck exactly like the one you tore apart but it had a new motor and was usable and I also had a gmc truck with a low boy trailer but I sold em both fer scrap I got rid of those two and my 1922 catipillar and my case backhoe along with a bunch of other junk the scraping company I sold it all to said altogether it was 74 tons of scrap metal that's 148,000 pounds of scrap metal
I hear what you are saying about the cab being too fatigued to save, its not like you can buy a nice, shiny, new, patch panel kit to replace the worn out metal.Still seems a shame to have to scrap it. Sometimes a vehicle is just too far gone to save it. Sad but true.
i work at a big home improvement store in canada and 80% says MADE IN CHINA i hate it..but we need to recycly but thoes ppl over there work for 1$ a day so they will die early and we will live on and they can have all the mess ect and give us back all the steel
get real the air brakes system... most people dont have a license to operate and a truck that old the air brakes are illegal on the street.
you can get a rust free cab for under a grand the clark 5 speed is worthless for a light truck and it needs a double clutch and deep bell your not going to get it hooked to a modern motor easily
these old dinosaurs are laying around because they cannot legally be used commercially and nobody want them for a personal vehicle too slow too much gas no insurance
I took a 1 ton 57 chevy panel van that had ben sitting in a field for 15 years, did a total frame off restoration, and trasplanted a 454 in it with a borg warner 5 speed overdrive (free)12 bolt posi rearend(free) an I.F.S from a 76 chevy,( I had to take it out but free) lead'd and tilted the front end, shaved 3 in. outta the top( yes glass and all) pri'merd it,A.C P.B. all In 6 mon time and It cost me $150.00 sold it for $9,000 Trust me it can be done...
Are you high? you should of saved the cab" all Bad corners and fatiged "and cut the dumper off ....re done the cab and made some kewl car hauler or transporter outta it
you jackwaggon!!!!your definetly living up to your name...
@2001silverado363 The cab was so fatigue cracked that it had dropped down off the mounts and on top of the frame. The cab corners and hinge pockets were all but gone. The dash had been butchered except for the glove box door, which is going to go into Project Whitey, the 57 GMC.
heck my 73 f250 oughta be on this show ! i bought it , the body was in perfect condition it was runnin great but smoking, tore it down to find the number 2 piston was broken , whoever rebuilt it last put a broke piston in and the wristpin has been grinding the cylinder wall and i gotta get it bored out .60 over. haha it's a wreck, i'm puttin a header on it and new cam and everything tho hopefully she'll be runnin forever :]
Besides all the glass being knocked out, it had fatigue cracks just about everwhere you'd look. All the hinges were barely holding. The dash had been hacked, although I did get the glove box door that I needed for my 57 project. None of the guages were original except the speedo, which the face had come off the rest of the body. The gas cap had been off for who knows how long. The bottom of the heater box had rotted away too. The doors were both mangled at the hinges.
Wow, thats sad to see what was once a nice truck go through so much hell. Well, at least parts of this truck will live on to serve some other vehicles purpose.
@THOMASOAKMAN if it was left there, all of it would get crushed and melted down, better for it to "die" this way and have parts of it help to fix another one
man that one of the coolest looking front ends on a truck ever
