  • no offence to Karen Magnussen, but i find it kind of..... unfairish that back then u could be a world champion with only a double axel, but now are world champions are doing triple axels, and some are doing quads. i know skating like evolved, but like if it was still like only double axels, i would like be at worlds which would be weird but fun!!!

  • Her music at the end is from the Rach 3, the same music Michelle Kwan skated to at the Olympics. I wish this were not out of sync so we could see better how she interprets the music. I love her spiral!

  • So great to see her video...for the first time. Her performance is very solid. I took lessons from her back in '88 at the winter club as a school activity...very very lovely lady. good to hear she still coaches there : )

  • those are North Shore Winter Club thunder thighs! the height of her jumps! wow

  • I'm just curious what were the second set of marks there 4 Karen?

  • I did a training camp with Linda Brochmann in Australia in 1985. She was a great coach.

  • karen is my coach.

  • Patricia Neske and Karen Magnussen are very similar in technique, presentation, and the body type, etc. It's almost scary.

  • Karen Magnussens grandparents were born native Norwegians from Northern Norway and came from the same small town as me up there. Karen Magnussen is therefore my relative.

  • She had great strength and a headstrong, powerful, almost masculine approach to skating that was--and remains--somewhat rare, but which was wonderful to see.

By the way, her music was Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto. There are fine versions of it here on youtube.

  • this is my aunt...

  • Figures counted a large percentage in these competitions. Many skaters had wonderful figures, but very simple freestyle programs like this.

  • @grandmagrumpy There was nothing simple about her program at the time, it was the most difficult program.. at the time. Karen had a triple jump but didn't need to use it.

  • i'm with Dick Button -- i can remember that spiral beyond all else and think it *should* be called a Magnussen Spiral. Every now and then bits of that grace and athleticism come along but not nearly often enough. (Am i the only person who thinks training in figures helps?)

  • She moves seamlessly, no stop-start. Very sharp.

  • amazing flying sit spin! she had it all - grace and power. I hear she coaches nowadays?

  • @dvdneely

Yep she coaches at the north shore winter club :D

  • @bunnyinskates i feel so special :3

    she's so nice!!!

  • no sign of fatigue!!! what was that music? some piano concerto...?

  • shes my skating coach! =)

  • xoi, it seems that every other former world-class figure skater is your coach ;)

Karen's moves were amazing. Instead of triples/quads that injure skaters, I'll take any of those combo jumps.

  • She skated very well but I didn't see much relationship between her skating and the choreography. Does anybody else feel the same?

  • I believe if you watch the video and listen to the music and the commentators you will notice that the video is out of sink. also notice she ends far to early. This is partly due to this being a 35 year old clip and remember there weren't vcr's in 1973

  • Ah yes, you're right. Thanks.

  • how did you get this on youtube?

  • @ynotallec I thought vcrs existed as a brand new goody in the early 70s. or maybe they were just test marketing them then. i though i heard a news clip about it on npr recently. granted hardly anyone had one before 1980.

  • @ynotallec "out of synch"

  • No we don't...

  • So glad to see this back!!!! terrific!!! best wishes...
